What is this games identity to you?

Going to keep this simple and to the point.

I've played since late 2017, been through many highs and lows with the community. after taken 7 month's away, I find it difficult to pinpoint the exact answer to this question. You see streams of comp play who critique every ounce of change made by the dev's. Then you see people who have played longer than myself and still consider this game a lighthearted party game.

There is no right or wrong answer to this question, I mainly pose this question to the developers themselves. I know to some developers it may be a 9-5 job and that's it (which is fine!). However, who exactly is this game geared towards? From a person who has taken the game serious, to taking time away with a more lax stance I would love to know the opinion you all have on this game. And is it perhaps going through an identity crisis?

I just want my game back. The game I fell in love with back in 2018.

Whether that game was a lighthearted party game or a competitive game, I don't really care.

I just want my game back. That is all I ask for.

It's an extremely casual party game doing everything it can to try and make you think it's a competitive tournament game yet it should be obvious it's not. Because of this clash people who want a casual game are held back by forced rank mode and not having many other fun options, and the competitive players find the game aggravating with how much RNG it has and how not balanced it is.

Also the game probably finds this scary

I think the game atm is going through quite a crisis with the overall pace of the games and the strong meta in which exists paired with a broken sbmm system.

I don't deny the game can be unfun at times and unbalanced but I do also think people completely will always exaggerate with the state of this game and balance. Which ruins a lot for me, a portion of the community.

Do I love the game as much as I used to? Nope.

But more so for reasons to do with graphic changes and the remodel changes of survivors etc, the game runs horribly on last gen console which pains me to have to play and can ruin my experience. (I started playing late 2018).

Not to do with balance cause I don't take the game seriously enough to whine about every little thing.

Dbd will always be like a toxic ass relationship. Kinda can't help but go back cause of the memories and love, even if it is a complete shitshow sometimes😂

It's an asymmetrical horror title predicated on intermittent reward regardless of skill to exploit the base aspect of human nature that values the journey itself from point a to b over actually getting to point b. By these elements, the same effect that gambling addicts experience at the casino is successfully emulated.

I think the binary choice between "competitive" and "party" game don't really bear out in reality, there's elements of both. What I'd say this game should be defined as is a horror-themed cat and mouse game with light hide and seek elements, since that is how it plays.

Any game can be played at a tournament regardless of balance, so any game can be competitive, so maybe the definition of "competitive" should be more restricted to esports? In that case, DBD is certainly more of a casual game, but that could change at any moment.

Personally, I treat it somewhere in the middle ground. I'm not actively goofing off every game... but this isn't a tournament and I'm not playing in some ranked competitive mode, so I'm not trying my hardest all the time.

Well, let's see how this game has been approached over the years:

    • Blatant cheating running rampant and proudly recorded in its competitive scene in the form of stretch res and brightness adjustments
    • On-going hacking issues that never get officially recognized (that I know of)
    • Lazy reporting system that places burden on user and deflect detection responsibility from themselves
    • Balance disparity between different levels of play
    • Balance disparity between SWF and solo queue
    • Numerous old and new content and bugfix releases that have been hilariously unbalanced over the years (original DS, Circle of Healing, pick-up pallet/flashlight stun bugfix, infinite loops, near-infinite loops, old one-directional unhooks for facecamping, etc.)
    • A whimsical and care-free attitude by the dev team (go play something else, we know people like to troll around in games, colorblind mode is nice but isn't a priority, idc about winning or losing, etc)
    • Events that are obviously favored to one of the other (I love the event, but if this were a serious competitive game that wouldn't happen)
    • A paywall system that temporarily prevents access money-bought in-game content for an extended period of time (you won't see things like Pinhead's perks in the shrine for 1-2 years, for example)
    • A terrible BP grind system that prevents access to in-game content more than a typical progression system probably should

I used to want this game to be competitive, but there came a time where I just had to admit it has gone the route of casual party game. After all, what else is there that's suggested the game is anything else?

Dead by Daylight is a confused game stubbornly clutching to its roots in a changed industry. With one hand the devs try to maintain that chaotic, messy party game vibe where crazy things can happen at any moment, but with the other hand they try nudge it towards the mainstream.

The result is an unbalanced casual game that can be played solo or in a team, with matchmaking, no comms or ping system, and a tournament scene of all things.

Toxicity: The Videogame. Every single bad human behavior dialed to eleven. Every moment is someone either being toxic garbage or trying to deal with someone else being toxic garbage.
