most games turning into "can you find hex ruin or not"
as above
When the mechanic is just based on 100% luck of coming across it and probably surviving the match, or by luck for the killer it's in a hard place to spot giving them an easy game you know it's a mechanic that doesn't work
it's 0 fun spending most games just wandering aimlessly around the map looking for the totem (don't get me started on the swapping to other dull totems) surely there is a better way to implement it to make it less based on luck/more interactive?

At least survivors have tools to find it ie small game /detectives hunch. All killers get is a sound notification that boons exist.

Ruin literally only works if the killer is providing interaction.
Anyone not being chased is also able to just M1 on gens unless the killer is securing fast downs....at which point Ruin is just fulfilling the same function as POP or Scourge.
You should probably look at WHY Ruin is working in your games.
As mentioned above, there are many tools to find totems.

yeah. roaming generators, running in circle and destroying pallets is real joy. Try it instead

Ruin doesn't stop you from doing gens.
If you keep getting chased off the same gen and don't look for Ruin...
Well, I have to give the people who do that points for stubbornness. Or maybe they're just really attached to that gen.

Really?
I haven't used Ruin in months. The reason being - in about 1/3 of games it gets broken at 5 gens and in about another 1/3 people either just power through it or it gets cleansed shortly after.
I find Pain Resonance, Surge or even Plaything+Penti to be a lot more consistent, even if it's max power isn't quite as high.

I was having fun with Ruin+Resonance+Plaything the other day. Sure, Ruin might go immediately. Or I might down someone and let the sidequests begin.

Ruin is usually not even good in the first place due to how easy Totems are to find

Ruin is one of those perks that tends to oscillate between being crazy strong and doing almost nothing.

I can relate to that. I stopped running Ruin on almost every build after regularly seeing it gone in a minute or less in my matches. On the very few killer builds I still have it on, more often than not it still goes quick -- but those matches it inexplicably isn't found, it can hard carry a match.

I used to use it if I was on a killer that could defend it easily, like Hag. Now though, I find Surge+PR both more fun and more consistent than Ruin+Undying.

With you 100% on Pain: Resonance. It's arguably the best killer perk added in the last two years, other than pre-nerf Undying.

Who is using ruin when boons are a thing?
Thus is why I started using deadlock, corrupt ,and no way out. When I was running ruin so often I would lose it and get no value or I wasn't a mobile killer so ruin didn't really effect the game and it was up all game.

The game is so bad because it spawned me in front of a totem as a survivor (luckily for the killer it was haunted ground)

Ruin is the least popular I've seen it in years, since booners have made any form of hex build more of a liabilty than it already was.

As survivor Ruin is the entire reason I started running Soul Guard. I just can't be bothered to look for totems. If I find it, great, if not I don't feel like searching every nook and cranny.
