Do you think that it is fair to Ghost Face when he gets revealed over obstacles not only because of technical issues that he has had for quite some time now, but also because of survivors using stretched resolution?
I understand that technically, stretched resolution is a way to play the game (I believe BHVR has stated this before, I am not 100% sure), but when it's 'abused' in this way, is it fair to the receiving end? I personally do not think so, and I am not too up to date on the dev teams thoughts/feelings towards stretched resolution, but I would love to get other opinions.

BHVR's stance is that stretched resolution is considered an exploit and they discourage its use, but it's not bannable or anything. That was from not_queen. It's hilarious when you go to the stream of some TTVer and he's got crazy ass stretched res looking at the ground the whole time with a red stain that can burn the retina out of your ######### eye. Anything to be as good as Ayrun!!!

Nothing about stretch res is fair. It gives survivors a clear unfair advantage that has no input from the killer side. I don’t understand why the devs haven’t addressed it yet.

I can't take anybody seriously who says it's not an advantage. You are literally seeing things the devs didn't intend for you to see. How is that not an advantage to be able to see more of your surroundings at all times? I mean there is literally a PERK that does this very very slightly.

Saw ohtofu stream the other day, and i lost so much respect for him after he said that stretched is more of an advantage to killer then it is to survivor, and that it hardly does anything for survivor while making the game "feel better".
The fact it is still in the game is disgusting, apparently the fix is simple and just requires ticking a box in the game engine but the dev's won't do it.

I can vaguely remember him saying a year ago something anti stretched res so that is weird. I guess his opinion changed since then.

Maybe this would break him, but I feel like Ghost Face should only be revealable if a survivor can see him and he has the ability to stalk them.
What I mean is like let's say you're working on a generator and he's not facing you, but if he were to face you, he could not see you. In that situation, you should not be able to reveal him. Now same situation, but if he were to turn around, he could see you and could stalk you. Then you should be able to reveal him.

If it’s not then oh boy, do I got some news for you…
Benefits include:
- Seeing over taller loops, reducing the mind games.
- Being able to see killers coming a lot sooner by seeing over more obstacles.
- Both of the previously mentioned things might give you advantages against stealth killers, or allow you to see things like Trapper placing traps during a loop ect.
- Revealing Ghostface over obstacles you otherwise wouldn’t be able to, robbing him of his power much more than regular survivors.
- Taller FOV as nurse means it’s easier to track survivors during her fatigue state, effective shortening chases as they’re in your LOS more often allowing you to know where to blink to straight away.
I’m sure there’s more that I’m missing as well, you can check out all of these examples on YouTube as well if you don’t believe me.

In stretched res, the game looks like an N64 game and definitely gives benefits. It's cheating, period.

Stretched res is cheating. It's giving the user an advantage not meant to be in the game via outside sources/programs. That is textbook cheating, and users should be banned for it. End of story.
And anyone defending it is probably using it and does not want to get punished or ousted as a dirty cheater.

I think stretched res is objectively cheating as it gives a clear advantage that was never intended. The devs never intended you to be able to do things like reveal ghosty in weird ways if you have an abnormal resolution. I don't know how anyone can even seriously defend it or argue it's not cheating.

Let's get something straight, right here, right now...
Using Stretched is not cheating. It is a byproduct of an oversight in the game not having a fixed Aspect Ratio.
Do you guys wanna tell me that people not using a 16:9 screen are all cheating? They may be stupid, but they are not cheating.
The people who force their game to another Aspect Ratio to get Stretched Res in-game are exploiters, not cheaters.

If I exploit a bug that lets me insta-kill all 4 Survivors, I am still cheating. I'm not 'exploiting', as that is just another word for 'being a filthy, skill-less cheater who can't win otherwise'.
Using stretched res to exploit an aspect ratio that gives you information you would not have otherwise, is cheating. Defend it all you want; You're still wrong. It's cheating. End of story.
Your deflections are rationalizations mean nothing. It. Is. Cheating. People who do it are cheaters, and trying to use a different definition does not mean it's not cheating.

Because there's no way to fix it that isn't either very heavy handed (just ban any non-standard resolution from even working) or would require rebalancing and redesigning the entire game.

Add black bars where the extra view would be.
People using the res at the proper resolution will never see it. Whereas people forcing it into a bad res to see more info will just see black bars.
Boom; no rebalancing or heavy-handed anything.

How is it not unfair when the survivor can perfectly see a killer over walls their not supposed to be able to see over? Not to mention Ghost Face can get revealed much easier just because of your resolution.

Anyone can download hacks for DBD; does that mean using hacks is not cheating? 😂

That is unfair. Especially the case with Ghostface. But it is all caused by an oversight in the game itself.
Ghostface gets revealed if he is in the middle of the survivors' screen. Using Stretched makes it easier to get him in the middle, since you effectively have "a larger middle".
But I will stand by my opinion, and that is that using Stretched is not cheating... It is exploiting.
At the end it isn't really important what you call it. It isn't fun for the other side either way. I thought I would just provide my definition, cuz I see the 2 as totally different things.

Imagine if someone made a mod so killers could see in third person, or even just be able to dynamically adjust their FoV. It would become priority number 1 and extremely bannable, instead of being slowly addressed with non-comittal answers or measures over a few years.

I meant that Stretched is a hardware thing. Everyone already has the tools to change their aspect ratio, one way or another. May that be software, or by buying another monitor with another Aspect Ratio, like 4:3 or even 1:1.
The example you provided is my definition of cheating, using 3rd party software to get an advantage others can't get/that is not intended, like insta repairing gens, going really fast, not being able to die, or knowing other people's location at all times.
Exploiting, by my definition, is using the tools provided (in this case, the game itself), may it be intentional or not, to get an advantage.
And yes, changing your aspect ratio can be done with software, but it changes NOTHING inside the game itself, besides the aspect ratio.

The devs actually said a while back they consider using stretched res to see over objects to be cheating. And per Dowsey they warned the Fog Whisperers not to do it.
Just because they haven't put in a fix to stop it doesn't mean they don't think it's cheating.

As I have only recently got a PS4 myself, and don't have DBD for it, I don't know much about it.
As I said, buying a monitor or TV with a different aspect ratio than 16:9 is still possible, even for console. But I don't know how consoles handle such situations. Do they force the aspect ratio to 16:9, even in-game? Maybe the TV itself has settings for it?
I don't know, so I am not gonna go into that. But as far as I know, it is still a possibility...

Pretty sure that consoles generally used to output a resolution and rescale for the display screen (or just output one resolution full stop and leave the screen to deal with it), that might have gotten better, but they've rarely been graceful at handling displays with incorrect aspect ratios even when a mix of SD and HD screens were commonplace.
As for your definition of cheating: if, to get an advantage, you need to look up what setting to change outside the game itself, edit a configuration file, and change things to a completely nonstandard aspect ratio that doesn't match your hardware, purely for the in-game advantage this will give you... then it's an unfair advantage. It's not intended, your average random player won't know it exists or be able to tell what you're doing. It's also unfair because it's asymmetric in which side it's more advantageous for because of the camera styles.

Why is this even a thread? It is literally not up for debate. None of your opinions are relevant on this matter.
Not_Queen from BHVR has explicitly stated it is cheating, AND has told Fog Whisperers to not do it or risk a ban, but that they are not taking action for it currently because first, no way to catch it (outside of someone doing it on a stream or whatnot), and second, there are a lot bigger priorities.

The increased vertical Field-of-Vision gained through the use of narrower-than-native aspect ratios is objectively an advantage, and it is unintended; intentionally abusing it is cheating. But it doesn't matter whether we consider it to be fair or cheating or whatever, as long as BHVR does not officially address it as cheating and bans for it, people will use it, and they won't care whether you like it or not. Voice communications are cheating too, by the same technical definition, but BHVR outright said they won't/can't ban for it, so it's just accepted as part of the game.
It's funny to see it be made out to be a "sided" issue though. Players of both roles objectively benefit from it, so framing it as yet another issue killers suffer from is yet another tell-tale sign of silly biases.
It should be trivial to remedy this, and various games already have done so. You can maintain FoV through all aspect ratios, by stretching the image to fit or rendering in black bars. I have no clue why BHVR is not doing this, but maybe their calculation is simply the following: nobody is stopping to play just because increased vFoV exists, but non-0 people might stop playing if it doesn't exist anymore. Why spend effort on something that at best won't change player numbers while at worst costs you players?
Then again, they also haven't made true fullscreen mode, distinct resolutions and advanced graphic settings part of the in-game menu yet, which are also easily achievable and something that only benefits the game. Plus ultrawide/multi-screen users suffer from the current VERT+/- function, so maybe the game would stand to gain players from changing it after all. Those things would suggest BHVR is simply lazy or not comfortable changing technical stuff, for some reason...

And anyone who says it looks better is just gaslighting those blessed with the gift of sight - clearly it looks awful and the more stretched the resolution, the worse it looks.
It gives you a FOV advantage your opponents do not have unless they are running stretched too. So of course it is cheating, maybe low level cheating but still cheating
