I need help
Realizing I literally have never played a single game of Pinhead, I decided to play a match tonight.
However, there is a problem: I stink.
I really just need some advice on how to play this killer, whether it's very basic or really advanced. Thank you!

One thing I’ve noticed from playing him is trying to cast a gateway and waiting to shoot isn’t the best play because it causes you to get disoriented and miss. You need to cast it out toward the survivor and fire immediately which gives them less time to react and it ensures they don’t gain more distance than you.

You need to play him like old Slinger. Open gateway and send your chains so fast. Don't wait so much because survivors will counter your attacks.

Agreed. Cast and shoot as fast as possible.
Also learn when to cancel. He’s Deathslinger esque in that it’s better not to shoot when they are wriggling around. They’re losing distance and there’s no cast cancel penalty.

Possessed chains are trash. I mainly only play him as an m1 killer and play around the box, which is his best ability by far. I only use his possessed chain for two reasons.
1. To instant fire it as said above. I only do this if I'm close enough to hit them almost immediately, and spawn the gateway as close to them as possible and then fire it quickly. This is just to stop them at certain loops.
2. Someone picks up the box and I'm too far to m1 them to stop them, I'll just shoot a chain to get them to stop. Gives me time to catch up.
Also, little tip, I almost never teleport. The only instance where I'll teleport is if say I downed someone and they picked up the box and started working on it as soon as I went to hook them. Then I'll hook them as fast as possible and teleport. It applies a lot of pressure as you'll have one hooked, one in chase, and one forced to go get the save.

that's really how I play too, but it's not really effective. What strategies do you use for finding the box/keeping it from survivors?

It depends on your perks too for that playstyle. I usually run hooks of resonance, corrupt, plaything and devour. I can usually get quite a bit of devour value, even Mori 1-2 before they can find it. And the scourge hooks lets me keep pressure without having to kick gens. Between that, corrupt, and the chain hunts you can really slow the game down.
As far as the box goes, it's about learning it's initial spawn in relation to your spawn. This is difficult if you don't have lethal pursuer, which I don't have it on him yet. Other than the initial spawn, it's just about keeping pressure, and if they're close when they pick up the box, it might be worth it to drop chase and go down the one with the box. Sometimes you just have to let them solve it if it's too far. But usually I get anywhere between 3-6 chain hunts a match.
Between the box, plaything, my constant pressure, and them trying to do gens all at the same time, it's a lot for them to try and juggle. Then you add in devour and it becomes a nightmare for them.
If you have trouble finding the box, and or getting quick downs on the people with the box, maybe try a build like this.
Lethal, franklin's, bbq, and corrupt or pop.
Lethal to find it initial, franklin's to make them drop it so you can pick it up without having to down them, corrupt or pop for slowdown, and bbq for the aura reading. Sometimes you can see people running for the box after hooking someone, giving you free knowledge of the box.

He's a killer that's very easy to stink at, and very difficult to do well with.
A few tricks:
- If you are facing a console player, chain them as they are dropping a pallet. The button for 'remove chains' is the same as the pallet vault button (and I'm betting that 10% of his inflated kill rate is due to this oversight alone!). Cruel, but funny.
- Initially, aim your portal directly on top of survivors as they run. The faster you chain them, the more ground you'll gain.
- Aim chains at feet. The hitbox is bigger and if you miss, your chain vanishes faster.
- The box will usually spawn as far as possible from both you and survivors. If you know where everyone is, you can often find the box quite fast yourself. Some high level Pinheads run Lethal Pursuer for this reason.
- Do not run Franklin's, as some people suggest. Something was shadow-nerfed, and if you obtain the box using Franklins it respawns almost instantly, rather than the usual 30 seconds.
- You'll learn how to judge box distance as you go. Essentially, if it's really close - start moving towards it and chase that person. If it's at mid range, you can try to interrupt it with a hook. At long ranges, unless you are already in a winnable chase, teleport to it.
- Pinhead's whole game is 'escalating pressure'. Your goal is to keep everyone so busy that they get overwhelmed trying to do the box. Always be doing something, and I recommend 'downtime reduction' perks like Agitation or Pain Resonance, or 'side objective' perks like Plaything and hexes on him.
- Your portals can pass through walls. As you get better, you'll find chances to annoy people with this. Pressure the gen directly above you on RPD! Scout!
- If you can get a hunt to activate, go ham. It's the one time he actually feels powerful.

Most of the information here is pretty good but I'll two thi go not brought up yet.
1. Hitting a chain at the exit gate gives them incapacitated if you down them similar to victor meaning you they can't leave immediately giving you time to pick up.
2. The other chains that spawn after you hit a possessed chain arn't as random as some believe. Chains attach to 3 parts of the body both arms and the torso. This means if you hit an arm the chains will aim at the torso and the other arm. The usefulness of this is basically using it to create camera shakes like hag traps to disorient or hitting a body part that is hardest to hit so the cpu chains have an easier follow up. This is difficult to put into practice so don't worry if you don't get it right away.

It's painful at first, but getting the hang of the chain really unlocks his potential.
Keep in mind that you only gain distance at short to medium range. Long range chains are more for interrupting actions like totems/gens/heals.
You want to zone the survivor before you go for the chain hit. This minimizes the damage of a miss. If you miss and the survivor has inside position, they can W forever.
There's a bit of Nurse in the chain. You ideally want some LOS before casting it. If you just fire it blind and the survivor isn't there, you're double screwed.
If you've played Clown, you basically want to land the chain in the same place as Clown gas: as far away from the pallet/window as possible at that specific tile.
So the basic theory is: manipulate the survivor position to a point where you can land the chain and also get the M1, then cast.
In an open space, get the portal as close to the survivor as possible and fire immediately.

My build right now is Plaything, Corrupt, BBQ, and Lethal.
I was thinking switching BBQ for Devour Hope or for Ruin. (Also, I haven't bought Artist and I don't really plan to anytime soon so I do not have Pain Resonance yet)

omg watch this guide on him it’s one of the best (or just watch pinhead videos) https://youtu.be/0-hy5hQypDI

Pinhead us tricky. Sometimes less is more, aka dont use your power.
All I can say is treat Pinny like a Twins 2.0 but the Box is an AI killer. If you work with your power, your power can work with you. Sometimes a lost match can be turned around with a well timed Chain Hunt.
Getting chain hunts off requires you to be keeping survivors busy and overwhelmed which admittedly can be tricky but there are perks like Plaything, Noed, Ruin etc. That can help keep survivors bogged down

Yooo I didn't know Lore Guy made a guide on Pinhead

I mean if you stink.. not much else I can say other than like.. take a shower...
Alright I know bad joke, in all seriousness Pinhead is a pretty difficult killer to play since he requires precision.
Best way to use his chain in chase is casting it directly behind a Survivor and sending it out immediately. This way you arent standing still for that long which means you dont lose distance and you make it much harder for Survivors to dodge
A perk that is also pretty good on Pinhead is Lethal Persuer. Knowing where all Survivors spawn can give you a pretty good idea of where the Lament Configuration is at the start of the match. Allowing you to start a Chain Hunt VERY early.
Speaking of the Lament Configuration, when you pick it up look around you and see where all the Survivors are. Majority of the time they will stay relatively close to where they screamed before the box spawns again, allowing you to have an idea of where its next spawn is
Hope this helps!
