Why I don't Want To Play Killer Anymore

Araphex
Araphex Member Posts: 696

Sick of the toxicity, body blocking and bullying. Even my therapist says this game isnt mentally healthy for me but I don't really have anything else to do right now after getting out of the hospital for suicide attempt.

I want to have fun playing this game but everyone seems to just be a toxic bully these days on here. Guess I can go play COD or other games I've gotten bored playing, or play Elden Ring, which is lonely AF...

FYI im not bald. My avatar has a buzzed haircut but they made fun of what I supposedly looked like. Not just this one guy, but his entire SWF. I'm sick of it.

I reported this, but I wanted to showcase why I dint want to play killer anymore. It isn't fun. It's even worse to be bullied after almost every game.

Just either press back button or don't look at the chat.

Don't let these people become your perception of humanity.

It's just a reflection of how unhappy they are not you!

They need to put things in perspective it's a videogame and they take it so serious.

In general survivors give all the salt in gameplay but they can't take it back.

Some I suspect are just trying to look big in front of friends. They are pathetic dude.

Hang in there dude and try to be kind to yourself.

Life is hard I know but you never know what good things might be around the corner,

The game mechanics are very limited for killers which allows survivors to be mean and bully killers which isn't supposed to happen (people will run away from killers and ghosts and monsters ) they can spam tbags and flashlight clicks and gestures plus all the body blocking . Bully squads are a thing they don't care about playing the game their sole fun is to bully and make fun of a killer and the ability to play with 3 other friends is one of the reasons . But you can do a payback if they're toxic to you just tunnel and face camp hooks and you can dodge lobbies when you see 4 players pop in instantly or more than 2 survivors with flashlights or similar clothes these are red flags .

    That sucks.

I've been on the receiving end of similar messages many times as killer. Now all messages are blocked.

Never got messaged as a survivor though...

I think the saddest thing I've seen from this game is how obsessive some of these players get to be. I play PC for online gaming. I never played online multiplayer in any console. DbD had forced me to private my steam profile, and disable comments. However, players went out of their way to search my username online to find my online gaming profile for PSN, just to send me hate mail, calling me slurs, and telling me to kill myself.

I found these messages when I was setting up my PlayStation to watch Disney+ with my son (and family). It was my breaking point to start talking about this big problem in the community that isn't being addressed.

I learned you can disable receiving messages from everyone in PSN that night too.

I set my profile on Xbox to not receive messages from people not on my friends list, so they started messaging people on my friends list.

What is going on in these people’s minds to bully others over a game?

Hey I’m sorry to hear about your experience. Nothing in life bad enough to be worth suicide and I’m glad you’re ok. It sounds like this game is not helping your mental state and maybe it’s just video games in general that might not be helping right now. Hope you are able to get the help that you need. I don’t know you or your situation, but maybe trying something totally new ( maybe something outdoors, in person with other people, etc) would be a good change of pace.

I used to always have my Steam profile public for years, never had any problem with it despite playing many multiplayer/online games and interacting with people online. It was all well and good, had some decent/cool interactions from time to time but dbd changed everything, now my profile is basically on lockdown because I don't want a bunch of cyberstalkers trying to ruin my life because I committed the atrocity of being in the same match as them, regardless of who won or lost or how I played. Funnily enough this only really became a problem when I started playing killer

Went against a Basement Bubba, and my teammates decided to feed him kills by going in the basement like morons. Then they had the audacity to say "boring basement bubba, no skill so op" the usual crap talking. I told them they shouldn't have gone down to basement, we wouldve all three of us escape (he had one person in basement and all the gens were done). They decided to focus their attention on me and started trash talking me and spamming "L neb" in chat.

Then they proceeded to go to my profile, and lie in my comments, saying "-rep he was teaming with the killer" (two of them commented the same thing). I asked them why they were lying just so they can get me somehow falsely banned, and they said they even had proof of me teaming with the killer. They then pulled up a photoshopped image of me in a steam comments section saying "+rep obedient killer, thx for teaming" when it was obviously photoshopped (text was crisp, while the rest of the background was pixelated.)

Just goes to show the weird ######### obsession and psychopathic nature these people have, just because I told them they shouldnt trash talk the Bubba for being "bad" when they literally fed him kills.

I disabled messages on PSN from people not on my friends list; now I just get friend requests with nasty messages attached.

As others mentioned, it doesn’t seem to matter who ‘won’ or how you played.

Bad losers are sort of expected but I’ve never seen so many bad winners in a game community before, and I’ve spent a lot of time playing fighting games where similar behaviour can be a thing.

I have depression and anxiety myself and there doesn’t seem a perfect solution; either put up with the toxicity and suffer, or quit playing the game you love and suffer. I also struggle playing the killer role as often my anxiety is so bad sitting on the lobby screen before I’ve even started searching for a game, like some sort of PTSD from all the previous terrible experiences and I just end up lobby dodging endlessly.

I sympathize, but sadly the fact of the matter is that BHVR have stated pretty frankly that they consider 'smack talk' to be an essential part of online gaming.

I disagree and think that this stance is decades out of date, and that it's going to come back and bite them eventually - but it is what it is.

I had a group calling me all sorts of nasty things, after I literally let 3 people leave on Demogorgon. Was a fun game.

The ingame community in DbD is appalling, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's one of the reasons that this game seems to be struggling to retain newer players.

Hate to say it but I've grown to expect it out of the people in this game. Post chat, steam profiles, etc. BHVR encourages it by proxy by allowing the role to be as trash as it is. They've taken the horror out of the game by lowering any risk you have as a survivor giving people more time than common sense and make jokes out of almost every licensed character to ever touch this game, ranks stats and elitism run rampant. Its not worth the risk of your mental health or happiness. Just stop playing..... people in this community victim blame people with epilepsy and all kinds of degenerate dooshbagery, the dooshbagery is then cultivated by BHVR's decisions and the community is a reflection of that. People piss whine and moan about rules that don't even exist anywhere in the games tutorials, help menu's etc. BHVR then double downs on the same BS further validating it. Just don't play it....sure stop by the forums every once and a while to check things out and see if they've dug themselves out of this cesspool but don't risk your life on this BS. Most of our content creators dipped out to more sane choices. Just follow suit.

Please play a different game that will actually make you happy. Nobody should ever self delete and definitely don't let this game and its players push you closer to that. Try to get beta access to VHS when it comes back online if you just have to play an asymmetrical. If not play just about anything else and try to keep your spirits high.

It's how the game is built that promotes this kind of thing.

I would suggest you just drop the game tbh. It's basically just a bully simulator at its core. It's unfortunate really.. the game could be so much better than it currently is.

Its not ok,you're playing games for fun,not to deal with this kind of bs,if anything make a function that will permanently disable the chat,so you cant even disable or enable it at will like you do now after a game.

Make it so you need to restart the game for enabling it again, this will stop you from even peeking to the chat.

Ohh yeah Bhvr is doing such a good job fixing their own game and core issues.

I cant wait for all the other 4v1 games coming this year,VHS,Evil dead the game,Ghostbusters spirits unleashed,Outlast Trials, just to name a few.And Midnight Ghost Busters that falls in the same category but its 4v4.

I feel like dbd era will be over this year if they dont do something like listen to their community outcry.

Yes you get toxicity in most online games, but DBD takes it to another level completely. Best thing you can do is block any chat or messages and play how you want to play.

It actually gives me a little bit of satisfaction knowing that some salty survivor went out their way to find me on on Xbox live and when they go to send a message they find out I've blocked all incoming messages from anyone outside my friend list. Just adds a little bit more salt into their wounded pride that they can't troll me.

While this type of stuff definitely sucks, it will happen in any online game whatsoever and I don't get why it is BHVR's problem honestly. They didn't even message you through the game, they used xbox live (which bans people like crazy even over super little things, reporting their message most definitely could've banned him for a while). BHVR could totally work on a karma system of some sort where after so many reports people only get matched with other bad sports but let's be honest, that would be abused like crazy. The best thing to do is either turn your account private so you can't get messages, or don't play online games.

I'm not excusing bad behavior but there are definitely things that can be done about the situation, especially if you are someone prone to suicidal thoughts or depression through video games.

Why are you playing this game if your therapist says it isn't mentally healthy for you...

To date, this is the ONLY game where the verbal backwash from various people in it's community was enough to convince me to disable non-friend messaging outright on my platform. It got so disheartening to deal with nasty comments on such a frequent basis regardless of how I was playing. Plenty of other games were rough in this way (R6: Siege, World of Tanks, CoD), but none of them made you deal with it as often as DbD.

The best advice that I or anyone else here can really offer you is that you should take preemptive measures to insulate yourself from the awful messages. Restricting or disabling messages will drastically cut back on the amount of crap you can get from people like that. If in-game interactions are frustrating you, then it would probably be best just to take a break from DbD as a whole and enjoy something else for a while.

...Or you could grab some friends and enjoy the game for it's original intended design as a party game. If you don't have enough friends-list folks wiling to play DbD with you, then I'm sure there's also plenty of people on this forum alone who would play matches with you if you asked them to.

I don't understand this mentality. I respect that some people don't like the after game chat for various reasons but why take away a feature that others enjoy when you can just hide the chat if you don't like it yourself?
