My crazy theory about the observer
So far as we noticed the observer is missing and his chair is knocked over showing he has taken.
How far does a mind break before a man starts to become insane? Through the scenes of the rift we saw the beginning of a man curiosity about the realms and stories as he hopes for an escape. But the old saying seems to be true curiosity killed the cat.
I believe we are looking at a possible future killer avoided of hopes of escaping and broken mind that sees and knows to much.
Or possibly I'm thinking to much of this and he was taken to feed a man spider.
These are ideas I'm having with the observer being missing.

Or his sanctum wasn't as "safe" as he thought it was and the entity knew he was inside there all that time and fed from his hope and an entity created spider kills him inside it.

I'm really hoping for a survivor/killer hybrid. The observer has a tendency toward violence, getting blackout drunk and he's really bitter about his situation. I'd love it if those tendencies led him to cooperate with the entity, while another version of him sent himself into the trials out of guilt to stymie his killer-self.
