Why DO/DONT you watch streamers?

Just thought this would be an interesting topic to bring up again, as always try keep content creators names out of it and dont hate on certain ones. Ill start.

I dont watch streamers because:

  • I dont need to learn anything (I always prefer to learn things myself, usually great at this but it's a curse at night when your mind wont let you sleep)
  • They dont have the same experience match wise (this is a big one, I can watch a streamer use no gen defense and even without doing any pressure people are slow on gens still... grr give me these games)
  • Some have very high entitlement, or are very toxic towards one side.

I watch them for personality and entertainment.

I don't watch them for personality, entitlement, manipulating matchmaking.

When I already play DbD regularly, I don’t really feel the need to get another ‘fix’. I used to watch hybridpanda’s dbd videos and twitch religiously before buying the game myself, and completely lost interest in watching streams right then and there

I don't watch streamers because video games are an interactive medium and I have no desire to sit around and watch someone else play a video game

The closest thing I do is I follow people like SpookNJukes on Youtube for their more unique videos like the "Calling out Toxic Streamers" kind of series. But just sitting there watching streamers play a video game, any video game, is not something that intrigues me at all

the shenanigans some of them get up to are just fun to watch. Seeing the stream as opposed to the yt video also shows that for every match that makes it to yt there are half a dozen - at least - that don't. For me, that added a lot of perspective and it helps me take whatever happens with a laugh instead of getting upset. It literally happens to the best - so why get upset about it?

Most big DBD streamers are hard to watch for me, with some exceptions. Entitled, hackusations left and right, belittling the opponent's, calling players streamsnipers or comp players (even though they aren't) etc.

I do tune into a few of the smaller streamers sometimes though, I like chill streams.

I also like to play more DBD than watch it.

The streamers I like to watch on Youtube currently are OhTofu and RedsGamingGears. They’re both solid killer players with entertaining positive attitudes who like to experiment with lots of different builds and killers.

I used to watch streamers a lot but I rarely ever so since I pretty much never play DBD these days (1 match in the last two weeks). It can be a good way to learn a lot or discuss things with a community you get to know if you frequent the same streams a lot.

  • Aven_Fallen
    Aven_Fallen Member Posts: 16,357

I only watch chill Streamers. I dont want to watch a streamer whining about the game if they are outplayed. This removes a lot of European Streamers during mid-day.

In evening, I usually play myself. E.g. I used to watch Scorpionz, but his schedule changed a lot at some point (he moved to the evening), so I did not watch him anymore.

Sometimes I watch Umbra or OhTofu, but Umbra rarely streams nowadays and both stream during a time where I am usually asleep or busy.

In the beginning I watched some of them sometimes, but now I stopped completely because:

1 some of them are just nasty and entitled pricks

2 not entirely truthful (their major interests is to do their business which mind you, it's fair, but at least avoid to pass as the impartial guy when you are actually doing stuff that suggests that the game is heavily killer/survivor side)

3 i found more fun seeing the stream of my friends

The streamers I watch I watch mostly for the person I don't care if they are super noobs or pros.

I am really picky when choosing a streamer and my number one no go is when they act like they are the big guys because they stream and its Okey to yell at every one because they must be right because they stream. This goes hand to hand with people making content that only is made of being a prick to other people. Trying to make your mates or enemies rage quit or not participating in a normal game because you need to do some sick pallet into blind into headon into DH into ds stuff because that gives clicks because there is no other reason to watch them because this guy's are always blend shallow and not even funny

SpookyLoopz is probably my number one right now. He's good at being chill even when games don't go his way, He's generally wholesome and supportive of smaller streamers.

Puppers is also a favorite but I haven't watched him as much lately. He streams less due to his medical condition and not always at convenient times.

Mogsy, formerly Sattelizer, is fun. He can be a toxic survivor, but does so with the mindset of "karma is absolutely going to bite me in the ass at some point", meaning he can laugh it off when that does indeed happen.

For me it's often about finding people who are entertaining to watch if I don't feel like playing myself. I can't replicate what they Suu but I can enjoy watching it and find fun ideas from it.

There’s only one streamer I watch and it’s only because I enjoy how he sometimes yells or screams when the killer is chasing him or gives him a good scare.

Otherwise, I don’t care about most of them.

I don't bother with streamers because i rather play the game myself instead.

Also without naming any names, i also find a good number of well known streamers and content creators for this game in general to be rather insufferable for one reason or another.

I remember as a kid in the 80s having to wait my turn to play an arcade game. Quarter goes on the machine behind all of the current player's quarters, and you got to stand there and watch that person play instead of playing, yourself.

    Oh, what fun!

I don't watch Streamers. I play video games. If I want to watch something, I have endless TV show and movie channels to view.

  • Starrseed
    Starrseed Member Posts: 1,774

The only time I saw a video I liked despite the fact they didn't played normal was 4 guys trying to make a giant pile of items around that one big tree that one map has. That was actually funny all 4 survs where in it the had nice chases with the killer they just didn't try to get out so in this case atleast I think no harm was done

I watch the chill, wholesome streamers who do not constantly trash talk other players. They're also very good at the game.

  • edgarpoop
    edgarpoop Member Posts: 8,445

I watch DbD leagues and whatnot and I'll watch streamers if they're doing scrims.

I don't care to watch most streamers for various reasons. They might not be that good, might have a very "pub" mentality, one sided view of the game, or be dedicated to putting less skilled players on montages (extreme killer/survivor mains). Plus the DbD content creator community is more about posting stupid hot takes for easy engagements anymore. It's all so boring.

  • The_Krapper
    The_Krapper Member Posts: 3,259

I used to watch them but recently stopped because anytime things don't go their way it's a "subtle hacker" I know they exist don't get me wrong but there's no way you're getting them everytime your game is going south , it always starts with "huh, this survivor looks a little bit fast" after they committed to a bad chase for multiple gens, I've been accused of it myself and reported even though I did nothing wrong it's just the new excuse for why they didn't win the game.

  • The_Krapper
    The_Krapper Member Posts: 3,259

Yea and I'm not denying their existence but I've seen some of those guys have multiple bad games in a row and blame subtle hacking and there's no way it's every game and one was doing this after the ban wave happened so hackers are scarce at the moment and not as frequent, if you told me 1 in 10 games had a hacker before the bans I'd probably be more likely to agree with that, but sometimes it's 3-4 games in a row where they start questioning the survivors because they made bad judgement calls

  • anarchy753
    anarchy753 Member Posts: 4,212

I don't watch streamers. When I used to, it would only be small ones that you could chat to while they play.

Nearly every survivor stream is the streamer sitting in discord with their friends, that's super uninteractive and I don't enjoy feeling like I'm watching someone else have fun with friends from the outside, it's just creepy.

It's also very rare to find killer players who play anything interesting. I don't like watching Huntress, nor Blight, so there go 95% of killer streams.

On top of that they then have to be not irritating to watch, or a personality I don't like, so in the end it's more effort to find a good stream than it's worth.

I watch some, but not others. Also I watch channels like Eurogamer and OutsideXbox on YouTube, so I'll watch their streams.

    The ones I don't watch

    1. Think their opinion of how something in a game works should be treated as fact.

    2. Don't seem to enjoy the game they are playing.

    3. Loudly cry and whine about things being "unfair".

    4. Make clickbait videos "bringing awareness" to exploits by showing exactly how to do them, or videos where they just whine about a change in the game for an hour.

The one full time streamer I do watch. (Ohm)

    1. Doesn't do bullshit clickbait videos on exploits or whining about perks.

    2. Actually seems to enjoy playing the game.

    3. Plays both sides.

    4. Routinely acts as though they understand that they're just another person playing the game.

I still do out of habit. Been watching DBD streamers since 2016 and I have no doubt that it was Twitch that brought DBD back from the dead. Bahroo quitting because of infinites, but then coming back. Angrypug tbagging while running infinites. Quizzle doing his blindfold streams. 72hours was so advanced and so was JaehyunC. Survivor skill levels increased so much with the help of these guys. Entitylefthand and his hours long hatch standoffs. So many fun moments, and there's still a bunch of good content. Lots of polarizing views these days as well but still fun to watch while I'm working.

    Then go from there.

I watch a number of content creators, for different reasons. I started out watching Otz and Tofu vids on YouTube as they were really informative, and they seemed pretty objective. And while I like to learn on my own, there is so much info out there that everyone else is consuming, I feel I need to be aware of trends and shift early.

Some I watch just for the entertainment (SpookyLoopz is one of my favorites, that guy is cracked).

I usually only watch streams when I am doing something else and want some background noise going on (usually smaller, wholesome streamers who need support then), most often I watch YouTube vids of the bigger names.

Some big streamers are more ego than substance, with little objectivity, having bought all the way into their own BS, and I avoid them. Lots of eye rolling when listening to people going on about how good they are, and all their opponents are the very best of the best. They must all have egos, but some seem to at least try to keep it in check, at least on camera.

Streamers that are toxic/rude, have titles like “DESTROYING SWEATY 4 MAN SWF”/“LOOPING BABY KILLER FOR 5 GENS”, or complain about MMR/sweaty matches automatically make me lose all respect for them.

I really respect wholesome and friendly streamers, regardless of skill level.

I wish it existed a good Swedish DbD streamer. (Yes, I am swedish.)

I watch couple of my favorite streamers on sun hours mostly, when evening comes almost every night i play couple of DbD matches. (with soda and potato chips) pretending i am also watching horror movie. hehe.

I've so much fun too. :D

So i follow mostly Swedish streamers, but i do follow some English talking streamers too. : )

I watch streamers play this game far more than I play it myself because I just don't have fun playing DBD. Sole survivor sucks for obvious reasons, and playing killer is nothing but a sweatfest. If I was getting paid to play then granted that could lessen the sting of it all, but as it is it usually takes many hours of playing just to come across a couple of really fun matches, and that's time I just don't have.

I watch a whole bunch of DbD streamers more or less daily. Even on the side while I play myself, just near muted during my matches and turned up while I queue.

The reason why is because I find them entertaining and they have good personalities. They don't take things so seriously and even if they get frustrated during a match it stays in the match and they're positive and polite in the end game chat.

I tend to stick to smaller streamers (<100 viewers) that I can truly interact with and not just be some unknown drop in the ocean to. Like Aaron_DukeGame, to mention one, I highly recommend checking him out, really good energy.

If I notice they complain about people for stuff or blame them when they're making mistakes themselves a lot or act toxic in any other way I'll leave and go to some other stream.

  • Brokenbones
    Brokenbones Member Posts: 5,223

I'll sometimes watch Otz when he's doing his streak attempts, mostly because I respect the dedication to it. Don't really watch any other streamers - there's good ones out there but a lot of the ones that get a lot of views are, to be blunt, awful.

Bad sports, hostile chat environments and overall they're entitled. I know that word has lost all meaning but by entitled I mean they act like their experience is the only one that matters, so if a match doesn't go their way they are free to berate their opponents, the developers and so on.

Then whenever people criticise them, they get banned with the reason "lol this is my space".

Benjo's YT content is pretty good as well, I'm sure his streams are as well.

I usually only watch them for a short period of time since when I see them playing DBD it makes me wanna play it as well. Don't really like having the game running while also watching the stream so I'll just close twitch.

If I'm playing killer though and someone happens to be a twitchie, I like being able to go to their stream and rewatch the match from their pov to see how the match went in their eyes. Even if they're not a twitchie I'd usually watch.
