Leave David Alone, He's Gay Period.

The only complaint I have is that David is getting a second tome when half the survivors still haven't had their first tome. They could've made Jeff be first gay character instead and given him a tome now along with new cosmetics in the rift. I hope after this they give the remaining survivors their own tomes first before giving any others a second tome.

I don't care. I just want BHVR to balance the game and fix SBMM.
I think they only made David gay so they can make pride outfits for him that people can BUY. BHVR only cares about money...
2 -
this is wrong on so many levels.
We care about representation, we care about the characters in our game - hence why so much work goes into their Lore.
Putting a brand new character in as the first LGBTIAQ+ character, which would be behind a paid DLC would also be considered "caring only about money" - I personally am much happier that we have fleshed out David's Lore and followed through with his story.
And of course, the people that work on the lore are not the same people that work on bug fixes, design changes or programming!
7 -
Okay, I understand. However I think it would be better to wait first for the Tome lore to come out so everyone can find out about David. When it is just suddenly announced on social media without any lore, context, etc... It feels forced. It's like "oh suddenly now he is like this". If the lore comes first, then it would be different I think.
4 -
cry about it
5 -
I understand that and it's very valid feedback.
Totally not our intention for this to feel forced at all, we see it as a natural progression of a character and we want to celebrate that with our LGBTIAQ+ community as the first openly gay character in our game. But I do understand the point you are making.
3 -
I appreciate that, but every single company will give the exact same, boilerplate response. I know I'm being skeptical, but I'll want to see the work before I join in the celebration.
0 -
Can I please put you at ease and tell you this does get addressed
1 -
I know it's different teams that work on different things but I just don't think BHVR really cares. These teams still work for the same company. If they really cared about the community they would have invested more money on a better anti cheat, focused more on QOL of the game and updated the report system. That's something that would benefit the game so much more, at least in my opinion. I just feel like David is going to be used by BHVR as a money machine, but we'll see. I don't mind him being gay, I just feel like BHVR did this to make more money.

Honestly, this is about where I stand on this too.
If you don't like the lore of a character in a game like this, where the lore has zero overlap with actual gameplay and is mostly buried deep within the menus - make up your own.
I said this in another thread, but if I as a kid of 6 or 7 could play with GI-Joes, making the characters completely different to their established canon with one of the baddies being a good guy and some of the good guys being baddies - a bunch of adults and pseudo-adults can surely do the same with their virtual action figures.
This entire thing is what I'd call a nontroversy.
1 -
I take it the lore's been datamined?
0 -
Yeah, the Peanits response was well..not very convincing. Not to me at least.
0 -
pretty so it has.
0 -
Well, if those who've seen the datamine say it'll be addressed, then that gets my hopes up.
Still think it's a bad idea to toot your own horn before it's done though.
0 -
Yeah and I read it and it's good
1 -
According to 90% of fanarts, he has always been gay.
0 -
If they changed Superman then I would be pissed
0 -
Im so glad he’s gay ❤️
2 -
Babes back off we're sharing
2 -
David King gay today, Meg Thomas a lesbian tomorrow.
0 -
That's true of most things on the internet though XD.
DC (and now Marvel) have found an absolutely ingenious way to get around this via their 'multiverse' concepts. Now you can have the 'diverse' characters and 'classic' characters at the same time, and both everyone and no-one is satisfied.
0 -
Don't some tome entries suggest something similar for DbD's canon?
0 -
I'm assuming you mean if they changed Clark Kent because they had his son Jonathan who is gay takeover as Superman so technically they changed Superman.
There was also Superman Red Son where he is raised in Soviet Union during the Cold War instead of US.
They've done several different versions of Superman.
1 -
Yeah I meant Clark Kent. I know they changed his son in the comics which ok. Just don’t change the original. And yeah I know about red son Superman I saw the animated movie and I thought it was good. You can have a gay Superman in the multiverse just like how there’s a black Superman in earth 23. Just don’t change the original. He’s been the same since 1938 lmao
0 -
Yeah and that’s fine you can have both. Everyone is happy. Just don’t change the original.
0 -
Just don't call me homophobic when I mori him. If I'm playing killer I don't care what your preference is. I'm still sacrificing you to the entity.
2 -
Now I want a shirtless David WITH a pride flag as cape.
Might finally move on from my old trusty claudette.
1 -
Nobody wants you to do otherwise. If they start shouting that without reason, then they're wrong.
2 -
Then we find out Meg is David's old girlfriend and that they used each other as cover only to find out together their true selves.
Ok, no.
3 -
"OMG WHY THEY HAD TO DO THIS WITH DAVID?!!??!?!?!? NOW I HAVE ONLY 14 OTHERS CHARACTERS TO THIRST OVER!!!"
5 -
All I can say is that there's a really nice song by Lily Allen that completely covers this.
0 -
It sounds wrong but it really isn't, every character I play is gay lol
1 -
Knew it, I thought his friend was his bf or crush. but good for him ig
0 -
Why?
0 -
imagine caring about making an imaginary person in a video game "gay" this world is going to shambles. I doubt the killer cares if he's gay or not still going to try to kill him and since were being all inclusive here why don't we have any vertically challenged people in the game or people with vitiligo or anybody with amputee arms or legs or people in wheel chairs guess bhvr doesn't care about them.
0 -
Ash is an amputee, it's why he has single hand cosmetics.
4 -
I don't care who you collaborated with. BHVR could have hired every single LGBT person including me to work on this collaboration and still I would be against it.
"New characters don't have lore" That's completely untrue licensed characters don't have lore because BHVR legally can't make stuff up for them. Newer characters have pages of it.
The act of choosing a character to be LGBT, for any good or bad reason, is very parallel to the idea that being gay or LGBT is a choice. When you choose one character over another you're implying either that there are implicit characteristics that are gay/LGBT. Any of the characters could be LGBT even Felix with a wife and kids could be LGBT. Singling David out for whatever reason or whoever you collaborated with again is very parallel to the idea that's it's a choice either that was intended for the character from the onset or it wasn't. I've seen the community manager you collaborated with some group and looked at all the characters and realized David was the best fit. That's choosing someone to be gay. Again it's both odd and concerning how parallel to the idea that being gay is a choice this is.
If you didn't want a paywall for the first LGBT character you could have released them for free. Imagine the better publicity around that. Being inclusive and diverse is so important to us as a company that we will release the first LGBT character in DBD for free. Again I'm LGBT I enjoy representation, what I don't like is the idea, that being that way is a choice. I don't like choosing this character to suddenly reveal his queerness years and years after his introduction. "He could have been gay the whole time" True he could have that's my point that would have been more pioneering and interesting. This is pandering, I'm not for this at all.
2 -
You're the first person I've ever seen argue that choosing to make a fictional character LGBT is analogous to the idea that real human beings choose their orientation.
5 -
Ideas are intangible including the words real or fictional does nothing to discredit the comparison. Also the fact that one person has pointed this out and other's haven't is another meaningless statement.
Please explain to me how looking at all the characters finding out which character would be the best fit for them being gay(the community manager's own words on how the company picked them) is different to the abhorrent notion that being gay is a choice.
0 -
Because fictional characters are 100% constructs of human imagination, decision-making, etc.? Everything about the existance of a fictional character is the result of a decision made by one or more humans, whether those decisions be made when the character is first concived or down the line after the character has long been established. Fictional characters fundamentally cannot exist as anything other than the result of choices being made.
2 -
"whether those decisions be made when the character is first concived or down the line after the character has long been established."
An established and extremely highly debated and criticized topic among many fandoms notwithstanding DBD. It's not even close to something that's considered a widely and easily accepted practice.
0 -
I don't know what you mean. Are you referring to the topic of changing/developing established canon?
0 -
Again I haven't seen any evidence that this type of change doesn't run parallel to the homophobic idea that being gay is a choice. Whether BHVR made a new character or updated an old as they did, homophobes' would complain. We accept that as a reality we ignore their argument.
In my opinion as an LGBT person, the act of looking at all the characters in the lineup and signaling out one as a best fit to be LGBT years after their creation and implementation is in my opinion parallel to that very abhorrent idea. There are no implicit characteristics of LGBT people outside of sexual orientation. They can be and are anyone that's the point.
I don't necessarily believe that was their intention I think most people are well intentioned, they have terrible execution. After a history wrought with this idea in the LGBT community still to this day even, it's extremely odd that this wasn't thought out more carefully. I couldn't care less if no one else makes that argument. It doesn't make me any less wrong; It doesn't make me more right either it's a non statement. Again, if others are fine with it, that's fine. This is my opinion, and it's not going to change.
0 -
Where is the "evidence" that it does run parallel?
2 -
Yay for David coming out 👻👻👻👻👻👻
2 -
Thats not the problem. It doesn’t matter what sexuality he is, it’s how they did it and that they could have done it much better. Good story telling for one.
0 -
He's currently living his best life aside from the meat hooks and constant loop of death <3
2 -
Good news the tome story is actually very well done
5 -
Good god bestie how many times do we need to spell it out that the LORE TEAM does not make the GAMEPLAY decisions and the GAMEPLAY TEAM do not make LORE decisions
7 -
how is wrong at so many levels if the game is still broken after 6 years. 6 years we dont even got a decent menu to change graphics as we should and isntead we need to manually modify the file, bhvr doesnt care about our gaming experience.
