He had a crush on a boy as a kid. His parents somehow figured it out and basically banned the kid from ever coming over again, but they went to the same secondary school so started dating in secret. When Tristan wanted to be introduced to his parents, David broke it off because he knew how it would end, and began publicly dating girls to keep his parents' attention and affection despite having been effectively disowned.
He was never into them, but he did it to avoid being ostracised even further from his parents and to keep one remaining thread of connection with them.

That's not all of his lore, for the record- I'd still suggest reading it because it's arguably one of the better tomes !!

If i can make myself love this game again, i promise you i will read. David is not my fav survivor but his lore is different than others. I loved his lore for that. We know he is not white or black, he is gray.
