Why is it OK when there are tons straight characters in DBD but when there is one gay it's an issue

Well, why do you care that a survivor is labeled as gay (when we had multiple heterosexual relationships mentioned all the time)? This is just a game, if a character being confirmed gay makes you ‚sick‘ you should really reconsider why it does it. It’s just a Videogame, you can ignore this announcement and literally nothing changes for you.

wdym hetero relationships?

Nurse and her husband
Frank and Julie in their tome lore (which was on the edge of being disgusting and definitely being shoved down our throats)
David having had a girlfriend (turns out he is not straight, but that was still a heterosexual relationship in the lore)
Felix and his pregnant wife
Oni is the direct ancestor of Spirit thus implied to have had a wife
Dwight having a crush on a female coworker (though admittedly this one is pretty low on the list)
Ace referred to as womanizer no some cosmetics
Wraith and Nurse having (romantically) implied cosmetics/texts
other characters in lore:
multiple parents explicitly stated as father and mother (Jake, David, Spirit, Trapper (not sure about his mother mentioned), Hillbilly, Meg (pretty sure her father is mentioned), for others I guess it’s mostly one parent mentioned and thus not explicitly heterosexual)
Pretty sure other relationships in tome/background stories (shout out to the one gay relationship in one of Haddies story’s i think - which didn’t get any further announcement by BHVR)

I'm pretty sure people don't have a problem with a gay character being in the game. It's more so that it's David and the way they implemented it.
2 -
I am pretty sure that people having a problem with it being David would have a problem with it being any other char as well or even a new char. Though many of them wouldn’t admit it.
it’s been implemented pretty well and fitting btw.

No idea, I don't even pay attention to that stuff. I just know that the only permanent code is for a gay pride flag and that BHVR have regularly hosted streamers just for being black or gay. This doesn't really feel like new ground.

Imo I don't think that's completely true. Maybe with other characters sure but a new character? I don't think that would be the case.
I also disagree with it being implemented well. David's been a character for a while and now they make his sexuality? It feels kinda forced which is something that happens in a lot of games as of recent years. Once again this is my opinion. I do like the idea of everyone having a character they can relate to but this feels a bit off.

Lmao this is the first time in my life im hearing this.
BHVR never posted this on their instagram or other social media platform, like they did with david :)

Sounds to me like you don't have much interest in the lore, then. Which is fine, but then you don't really get to complain about this, then. :P
1 -
Why do you care about lore announcements that's posted on social media? You've already signaled that you don't follow the lore.

Because other lores dont get posted either, so why post a lore of a surv thats gay? Whats so special about being gay?
0 -
It's special because it's the first one in over 50 characters the game has. It's an important part of representation.
Yeah, I don't agree with how they made a special Twitter post about it tbh, but there's nothing wrong with it.
Also, I feel just as disgusted as you feel when you see gay representation when I have straight relationships constantly forced down my throat by every single piece of media.
2 -
Sure they do. You'll see BHVR post links to new chapter lore and also quiz people on lore on Twitter, for example.
1 -
Yeah, I'm using these forums to procrastinate right now :)
What I've seen is mostly people saying it's unnecessary (at worst). That's a little different, I think.

As a gay man myself, people thought I was straight until I came out. I'm sure people felt the same way about me... Why did I have to turn straight or make a big deal about it.
I literally have relatives (aunts, uncles, cousins, sister, ect) who cut me off because of who I am. I lost great friendships because people have an issue with it. I don't know why, well I do in some situations, but they are all different.
People are going to judge. Best thing I can focus on is that BEhavior did the right thing and gave people like me a place to call home and a family for many of us who have none.
I suffer from Major Depressive Disorder and PTSD from an anti-gay attack I was a victim of... and for a long time I hated who I was... Still do sometimes. A few months ago I quit playing this game because of a few bullies making fun of me for me losing a match... I attempted suicide. Long story short, I'm better now and trying so hard to love who I am today. Let the haters hate. Let's spread love in this game and community. That's the only way it stops being an issue. We may be a minority in society, but the true minority are the haters scared that we win. Let love win. 🏳️🌈❤

Read my comment. Since when do straights get shunned by their families or kicked out to be homeless for being straight? At the ages of 13-17?? Have you ever had someone hold a knife to your chest threatening to kill you because you're straight? Did you get beat up in school for being straight? Did your parents wish you were dead for coming out to them as straight? Please, do tell me. I'm sure the devs would also love to know so they can make you feel, what do you call it... "special", too.

Representation is a good thing. There are certain situations where it’s handled great and others where it’s handled poorly. This one with David is fine but I hope that the next one will be in a new chapter. I don’t think anyone would have a problem with that
2 -
Damn, this makes me feel really lucky. My mom is very homophobic, but she just brushed it off when I told her I was pansexual. She still isn't acceptive of LGBT but doesn't care about whomever I like. She's more like angry that "they managed to corrupt you". She loves me too much to ever do anything to me for being pan.
3 -
I have seen people argue in previous discussions/threads that they would be against a new character being the first LGBTQ+ rep. There are many people that are against inclusion but since there is no real actual arguments they try to find excuses
2 -
I don't know what my mom really thought... She said she loved me for who I was but her actions said otherwise. She passed away from cancer years ago so I'll never truly know. But the rest of my family don't want me around. We all have different experiences and I just hope mine can help others.
3 -
Honestly, a real mother always finds a way to love you no matter how disappointed she is. Can I say that my mom was happy for me being pan? No, but she definitely didn't kick me out or something else.
By curiosity, where are you from?
1 -
I don't get why sexuality is a thing in this game, I don't care if they're straight or gay, I'm looking at there perks to see what'll help me survive
3 -
Literally, when I read one of the lores and it mentions like a girlfriend or wife or something, I'm like "that's nice" nothing more, it's nothing quite exciting imo
1 -
And do you say the same when you read about a guy having a bf?
0 -
They threw away that whole "Up to INTERPRETATION" thing long ago, when they also threw out the games risk/horror factor.

There's nothing wrong with implementing a gay character in the game, but as a gay guy, I've had my sexuality thrown around everywhere to everyone since I came out in middle school a decade ago. People treat me like I'm some sort of endangered puppy that needs protection. When I play a game about killing survivors/escaping a killer, I don't want some random character's sexuality to be the most important aspect of the game overnight. And with all of BHVR's pandering, the twitter posts, the lore additions, it all just feels like BHVR is saying "Hey look, guys look! We have gay people now, isn't it amazing?". Is being something that isn't straight such a big deal? You don't need to partner with a professional company to write lore for regular people. All of this stuff is just so extra. If being gay, lesbian, bi, etc, is really accepted and normal, I would appreciate if they just stopped putting so much attention to it. Not being straight doesn't make me or anyone else special. Representation is fine. Pandering is not.
10 -
David King being gay isn’t his most important aspect/trait at all. It’s just part of his current (second) tome and hasn’t been mentioned before and if everyone was just okay with it and nobody would find ‚arguments‘ against it it wouldn’t be such a big deal. That twitter post and the post on their website aren’t more than that, there are plenty of other Tweets that are being completely ignored so why concentrate on this one?
representation is important to normalize being LGBTQ+, we are sadly not there yet (and frankly if you feel like that I envy you and your bubble) and thus it is worth mentioning if a medium such as a videogame finally adds representation after announcing it almost two years ago.. especially after they have been kinda (unintentionally) exclusive saying they wouldn’t add any sexual orientations and topics like that while still including multiple heterosexual relationships.

Wise words.

As I, and many others have said. It is not that they made him gay, it is HOW they made him gay and the way they made they drew such attention to it.
As I've said in the past, I think this whole thing has been a step backwards. Again, not because he's gay, but because of the way it's been handled, both by BHVR and by the community. A person/character being gay, is not something special and shouldn't be treated as such. If it turned out that Clown liked sucking on more than a finger, would that change the character in a meaningful way? Would he not still be a fast fat man that laughs and throws his piss at you?
If it's the case that we SHOULD make it into this amazing thing, should we celebrate how someone's straight as well? In the context of DBD, should Jane or someone be celebrated and have an announcement for liking the opposite sex? That would be equality right? So why aren't we doing that exactly?
In all honesty, as a person that's into both. I say good on bhvr and it's nice to see a gay character, but.. I genuinely don't see why they, and by extension we, need to big it up so much. Just let a character be a character, whatever they're into. Just say "Ok," and move on like you would with anyone else in the game.
4 -
that I don't understand. Why would they be against it other then being homophobic? There is no real good reason.
2 -
I'm eager to see people juggle to answer to the second paragraph. It may genuinely surprise me.
1 -
Exactly. It’s homophobia.
0 -
Yeah. I can't really say much for those people.

well aren’t you forgetting how LGBTQ+ people have been (and still are) being unjustly treated for just existing? I would gladly live in a world where being LGBTQ+ was being treated the same as being heterosexual, but we are not living in such a world. And while it is better than it has been especially in the modern western world it’s still not in any way how it should/can be. So as long as heterosexual people aren’t been oppressed, killed and far worse for just existing there is no reason to celebrate their representation in a videogame which already had heterosexuality represented since almost the release while explicitly excluding LGBTQ+ characters up to two years ago - and even then they needed this long to deliver because they tried to make it in a way to please all parties - and reading all those people saying how and how not they should have done it and what they did wrong and right: apparently people - including yourself and myself - wouldn’t have accepted it just with an ‚okay‘ anyways regardless on how they potentially would have handeled it if done differently.
it’s okay for them to celebrate their first LGBTQ+ character if they feel like it’s is worth the celebration. You may not feel that way which is okay as well. But then again. You can just not pay attention to it. It was one tweet and one blog post on their website and the rest came from the community - something not in the hands of anyone and certainly heavily driven by homophobic people that may or may not outright state their homophobia.

Speaking as someone who honestly could not give less of a damn about what people’s tastes in partners is since it really shouldn’t have a effect on how they are perceived by others, it’s how it was done rather then that it was done that makes it seem a bit disingenuous, as several other people have pointed out
Had they just made a new character for it, no one would mind, it’s the fact that they took a already established character and then suddenly slap the LGBT tag onto them that makes the whole thing seem like a PR stunt
But that’s just my 2 cents, since as I said, I really don’t care who David wants to sleep with so long as it isn’t children, animals, or the dead
1 -
The people complaining about “how it was done” would make the same complaint if it was done literally any other way. It’s just homophobia.
4 -

you would hope so but that’s not true. In the past people have stated how it would feel disingenuous if it was a new character for various reasons: it would just be pandering, they would do it for the money, the lore would be poorly written and one dimensional etc pp
1 -
People complain about everything unfortunately, but I personally would have preferred if they had made a new character for this representation push instead of slapping a label onto David and calling it a day
0 -
Fair enough for your personal preference. But I guess we can still expect further additions and inclusion!
although what I heard about the tome story it’s very well written and not just slapped on! It ties in stuff from his previous tome and background story about his ex and his relationship to his parents. The tweet on its own may feel like it’s been slapped on though.
1 -
If David’s story is well written, I’m all for it, but the tweet definitely didn’t help with how it the whole thing ended up looking
Personally, I would have just left out the Tweet and let people figure out that David was gay for themselves, would have been a lot more organic imo
1 -
Videogames are a medium and part of real life just like TV shows and movies and books etc. Representation in media matters and is needed for normalization, it may not end homophobia on its own and literally nobody said it would but it certainly can and does help towards the right direction and without positive representation in media we wouldn’t be where we are now.
Also it’s not forced in our faces. It’s one tweet and a blog post on their website. If you are not able to ignore this tweet that’s on you and your relation to the topic - I certainly ignore like 90 % of all of their tweets or forget immediately what they were about. They have worked on this representation for almost two years and they are proud of how it turned out - there is really no harm in trying to celebrate it as it IS part of their real life and that of many others - even if concerning just a fictional character.
and you can disagree all you want. It is a fact there have been many people on these forums in past threads about LGBTQ+ inclusion that confirm they would be against inclusion the way you just described it. There is literally no way inclusion of a non-straight playable character wouldn’t have turned out into these kinda threads and discussions and argumentations.

But to me, my political, moral, social and all-togehter worldview define me far more than my sexuality. And i really believe i am not the only one. Why is representation only important if it is based on skin tone and sexual preference?

I personally don't think it was 'needed' but I'm not complaining.
Not a bad choice of character and I doubt they could have done it any better for those saying "it's HOW they did it". If they had made it a new or newer character, there'd be accusations of milking it for monetary gain.
But, as I said it wasn't needed. By confirming David is gay, you're essentially confirming that all of the other unspecified characters aren't. Sometimes leaving it up to player interpretation is the better route.

Just like the others, the issue isn't David being gay, it's how they went about it.
0 -
Yeah... what's the difference?
0 -
becuz it was forced and lazy
2 -
As many others have stated, it does feel forced. Whether yeah, I am gay and yeah, I kinda like it and would've loved if they confirmed Felix being gay. It does feel like "so we finally did it, we finally have done an LGBT+ character" and we all know aobut how many people shipped David with Dwight. The problem is not against a gay character per se, but how it is implemented. That being said, I think it's kinda stupid the "oh, we need representation because Nurse was stated to have a husband". So? It's an horror game and sexuality has nothing to do with it, yeah a character, or a few are called straight but if so, then what? They're not suddenly saying being gay or lesbian is wrong, are they? Besides, there's a reason why we are a minority AND, there's a reason why straight people are added more often that gay, because gays feel way too forced and not casual. If you tell me that the main character of Celeste is LGBT+ I will say, so what? It doesn't change that it's a great game and it's a great main character. The problem is, and something that people don't realize... this is called marketing, when they use a minority to make a profit... such as the statements of the Pride month, every company is going to make them. Does that mean that they approve it? No, but if a customer is happy then it's going to keep supporting said company.
Also as my final point. I am not quitte sure the backstory says he's gay as per se, not like it's a problem.

I'd like some socialist representation as well. Next Survivor Karl Marx please.
