As a both DBD player and POC, i must ask, have the Bubba mask removal solved anything?
Because the trolls with their racism is still here, they still make matches living hell and still do their targeted harassment, Smartface or not.
So it seems to me that it didn't solved anything but took away 4 unique cosmetics we had earned, gave us some shards and made the twitter users happy before they forgot all about it
seems to me that it was a cry for attention by them and the Fog Whisperers and they succeeded in getting attention while no real issue was solved

This again? Nobody thought it was going to end racism. The masks were being used as a tool to harass players, so they were removed. I'm convinced people are being willfully obtuse/contrarian about this at this point.
13 -
no it didnt solve anything, racist will be racist.
13 -
According to one of my friends that was asking for the removal, yes it's made her gameplay experience against a Bubba better actually
6 -
It resolved the issue of having people using the mask with the intent of implying blackface.
3 -
Why are we talking about this again?
6 -
Well, it made the Devs feel good about themselves, and that is kind of the whole piint of virtue signalling. Same thing with making David gay. How has it changed the game in any way? It hasn't, but the Devs can now pat themselves on the back.
At least now when I tunnel Davids for being annoying scabs I can look forward to being called a bigot.
9 -
They're still facecamping, but different cosmetics.
It's a less racist facecamping. So, technically an improvement.
4 -
"virtue signaling": when minorities are represented because minorities exist in real life
3 -
It really didn't do much, if anything.
But the devs got their pat on the back at least

I didn't really see any racism while playing, but I always assumed the camping bubbas were using the Claud mask knowingly.
0 -
I used it because it was the only one I had unlocked it was weird how they never had a tracking system you just had to guess
0 -
It actually just implies racism in the opposite direction. Bubba only skins and wears the faces of white people! Discriminatory!
3 -
I should have clarified that I'd only apply that mentality to the ones who were being salty in post game chat. At that point it's very likely they're a troll and wearing the mask for attention.
0 -
Yes, and mine too. Now it is less racist which is good. People now know I am face camping them just because I do not like them and not because I am racist, hurray!
4 -
No now Im jusut camping all the Davids
1 -
In general I've seen less toxic and/or facecamping bubbas than I did around that time
Anyone else have the same experience?
1 -
And the masks were also not being used as a tool to harass players also. You have to understand why a lot of people didn't like them removing these cosmetics. The masks were not intrinsically offensive. They were a cosmetic made for a killer who wears the face of his victims. I rarely if ever even saw a cannibal player use these cosmetics to begin with. I can't imagine it was happening so much that they felt the need to remove them.
5 -
Without the ability to bully Claudettes, nowit's the Jeryls who suffer Haha

Except that the cosmetic actually had darker skin (due to missing textures) under the mask, thus actually making it Black Face and therefore was problematic and at least needed fixing. BHVR and the license holder obviously decided it was best to remove the cosmetics.
and it happened often enough to be a problem. several streamers reported this and, you know, having it literally in live streams happening…

Something I don't understand regarding this: One has to be playing Bubba in order to be wearing the Claudette face, they removed Killer switching years ago.
So... are people trying to say that racists would play Bubba with the intent to streamsnipe? Or lobbydodge until they got a black/POC streamer?
0 -
Yea if you see a clip of it happening on a stream its going to resonate more than say someone playing the game for over 2000 hours and never seeing it happen at all, like me. Also I don't understand what you mean when you said the cosmetic had darker skin making it black face. Which one are you referring to? Claudette's? Well she is black right? I don't see how a fictional character who wears the face of his victims is doing "black face" by wearing the face of one of his victims. This seems a bit unreasonable to me.
2 -
So do you think BHVR is racist for creating the cosmetic and keeping it in the game for such a long time then? Genuine question
Bubba might be a fictional character but the actions of the people playing him aren't. That's the whole point, if all Bubbas were NPCs then I don't think people would have been impacted the way they were.
1 -
I guess many people already played Bubba regardless, especially people like this just because of the facecamp potential and to make it as unfun for their opponents as possible. Those people are probably not just racists but bigots in general and found a great opportunity to make it even worse for PoC that were streaming.
1 -
This is true. This is why individual action to those doing it, backed up by proof that their intent was racially motivated, was the better approach in my opinion. The people who were opposed to these cosmetics being removed had valid points as to why they thought this was a bad idea.

This was never meant to fix anything, you can't fix racism. It was merely intended to hide the racism behind the actions of these persons.
If a person does not realize he is being insulted, then he won't feel offended and his general perception of the situation will improve.

No I don’t think so. I think it was just an unintentional mistake/bug for the texture to be missing and it probably wasn’t even noticed by the devs/license holders. It got approved, added to the game and that’s it. After that they needed when it actually got reported and brought to the devs attention, I think it was not_queen who said in a stream that they need to fix this but they were not able to without approval by the license holder
1 -
Yeah I mean it's always sad to see content be removed from the game, we lost the Dwight, Meg and Jake masks too.
But BHVR made a call and I don't really disagree with them, no matter what they did people would've complained so they might as well just put a final stop to the whole thing
2 -
Yeah makes sense, totally agree
1 -
Yep. My opinion on this is it would've been better to simply leave it alone. There is always going to be toxic people in every gaming community. Those who did this probably see it as a win for them anyway. Whenever things like this happens it just seems to spark more controversy than actually helping solve the problem.

I am talking about Bubbas skin underneath the Claudette mask. It was darker for Claudette’s cosmetic compared to his other cosmetics, thus making it unintentionally Black Face.
as to why you don’t notice it: are you a person of color and was this always apparent for your opponents? If not then of course you won’t notice it often. We are talking about streamers that had to endure this in their streams.

🙄🙄🙄
2 -
Now that I did not know happened. I understand now why you called it unintentionally black face. I was just confused there so thank you for clarifying that for me.
0 -
It did solve the problem of people complaining on Twitter about racism.
0 -
I spoke to one of my POC friends and they said they have not noticed a significant reduction in obviously racially motivated actions. They also said that there could be some less obvious one's, but there are still Steam profiles where people keep count of all the POC Survivors they've killed.
In a similar vein, I wear both the Pride Charms and have received around 15 messages in the last year about them. Most are fairly simple in their hatred.
So, to my knowledge, it has not actually had any tangible benefits to our POC community, they are still targeted by bad actors in our community
1 -
Realize you're not the only POC. Just because you are okay with it, doesn't mean others are. Bhvr already knows it didn't stop racism in their game (they still need to badly work on this). however, it's doing something. maybe not for you but the people that were upset over it.. It's the little steps. NExt person that brings this up imma just say go cry about it tbh

Looking at the current ingame model right now and the eye sockets are dark as hell even with brightness turned all the way up.

We get harassed and death wishes in after game chat for years, but if a small, very vocal group complains that a Bubba facecamped their Claudette, then everyone must have their cosmetics taken. I'm sure part of it is a PR thing.
0 -
Well that's all it is, PR stunt. No colorblind settings for years, on the basis of it could give an unfair advantage, one dev calls people asking for it annoying, one article written later calling BHVR out suddenly its "oh, we wanted to SURPRISE the community, but recent events ruined it"
Blackface Bubba, happening for years, BHVR doesn't care. Streamers suddenly complaining, suddenly BHVR cares. They only care when their image is threatened

I'm going to go ahead and close this up here, as it has been explained many times the last few months the reason why the masks were removed from the game.
It was never stated this decision would completely eradicate racism, however, it was a preventive move aimed at eliminating a tool that people used to perpetrate a specific behavior in the game. Please also know that people that are repeatedly harassing players, or stating their actions in the game was of hateful intent in post-game chat (because of a player's or character's race or identity), is absolutely a reportable offense (in-game report required, support ticket is optional) , and anything on player profiles (Steam, PSN, XBox, etc) that would denote hateful, racist, etc conduct, should be reported to the platforms they are on.
