I was thinking about upgrading to the PS5 and currently play on PS4, I feel like I should be able to transfer the save data + purchases from one gen to a newer one is that the case? I couldn't really find anything about it just from google searching or I was just looking in the wrong place. TIA!

I think you can.
It worked when I went from my Xbox One X to my Series X.
