Help with The Onryō.
Hello, I just have a question about our friendly well ghost. How is she supposed to play? I’m mainly a Huntress, Doctor, and Nemesis player (Picked up Dredge too.) but the two matches I played Sadako I had no luck testing out her kit to it’s fullest. (One reason was the Survivors rushed me in like 40 seconds but that’s a different issue). Is she akin to Wrath or maybe a mix of Wrath and Dredge? I’d like some advice from fellow killers and some survivors.

Play dredge way better onryo

Wow there are a lot of Sadako posts today
Anyways, I'd just try to get a feel for teleporting and using manifesting and de-manifesting creatively. I recommend perks like Thrilling Tremors, BBQ, Haunted Grounds, or Make Your Choice.
People will tell you that she's garbage or to "just play Dredge" but don't be afraid to play low-tier killers if you find them fun.

How does she lunge? That’s a problem I was having with her.

Sadako/Onryo is a hit and run Killer, and the best way to use her ability is midchase and port to TVs.
The main issue and struggle with this though comes down to two factors. 1) This is a very heavy and difficult mindgame to play as it requires you to essentially be able to guess that the Survivors will either keep running to the TV or stop and try to hide while you have the Oblivious effect. If a Survivor catches on to what you are doing, they just have to Nurse you and do a 180 and they gained a lot of distance for free.
The second part comes with Survivors able to turn off your power. While yes it is "in line" with Sadako, ultimately anytime a Survivor can deny the Killers power without a suitable penalty, than the Killer suffers.
Take Plague for example. If I get infected, I get one of two choices. Either I don't cleanse and therefore become broken and a one shot, or I do and Plague becomes a ranged Killer. While yes I can deny Plague a part of her power, I am now put into a situation where if I get got in a bad spot, I am easier to take out of the game.
Now look at Sadakos condemnation. When I turn off a TV, I get the tape and a clock that builds up to 7. If it gets to 7, I can be insta Morid. So the IDEA is that while I am denying Sadako her power in return for getting a target on my back, the actual reality is pretty bad. First, Survivors don't gain Condemnation incredibly quickly, unless uou are running certain add ons or they keep turning off TVs. Their bar also pauses when you begin chasing them, so theres even more time it can take to get a reward as Sadako.
Another issue is that when you pull the tape, the TV to remove your condemnation is revealed to you, and even has an aura for a little bit if I remember correctly. So the risks of carrying a tape is further lessened since I know where to go to remove my condemnation.
Next let's go over her Manifestation. It's no doubt Sadako is built like the Wraith your mom says you have at home. While shes billed to be a stealth killer, shes a stealth killer with a lullaby, so you cant really sneak up on Survivors unless they aren't paying attention. And like Wraith, she can freely swap between her two modes, one where she is visible and can atta k, and one where she fazes in and out like Spirit and is unable to attack.
Like Wraith, when she goes from vis to invis, she doesn't really lose speed. Unlike Wraith though, she doesnt gain a speed increase while invis (She is able to phase through Survivors though so they can't block you in a pallet from what I understand, though Ive never really been able to confirm this so make of it what you will). Another thing she shares with Wraith is when she transfers back to a visible state she slows down, but unlike Wraith she doesn't gain an increased lunge distance.
So she shares similar mechanics to Wraith, but none of the strengths that help out Bing Bong Boi. While invis she also has passive phasing like Spirit which is a plus, but no where near as good and just like Spirit you can't see it so it's hard to capitalize on it. And as many others have pointed out, she shares teleport with Dredge, only Dredge has more options than Sadako and Survivors can't repeatedly turn off it's power like they can Sadakos.
Sorry thos became an essay, just started going a couldn't stop. I do still love Sadako, still one of my favorite Killers, reason why Im so sad Dredge is outshining her so well. I really hope they give major buffs to her kit. My dream one is removing Survivors knowing which TV to return their tape to. It would certainly add pressure AND give a secondary objective, rather than a "oh, let me pause ten seconds and quickly return this before I get hot with late fees"

That is helpful thank you. May I ask about her lunge? It seemed nonexistent when I tried to play her?

I have no problem lunging with her but I agree the lunge animation could be better.

I couldn’t even tell what she was doing. I’ll probably ask a friend for help with her kit.

It's just like any other killer, although it takes some time to get used to because of the shape of her weapon. You'll learn to play around it naturally.

The same way as all other killers, with the same range. If you know the approximate range with one you should be able to get the others fairly easily.
There is a minor slowdown upon manifesting for a tiny bit so the lunge may be very slightly shorter but it's also barely noticeable.

she plays like any basic m1 killer while being worse than all of them, nothing really deep or complicated about onryō.

All these Onryo threads make me wanna play her again. Thanks kids I'll do so after work 👍

Lunge is the same as any Killers, though since she has such a unique attack animation it can feel off. The only time she ever gets an "increased" attack is right after coming out of a TV

What if we don't like Dredge? What if we wanna play Sadako?
The guy is asking question about Sadako. Question was not "Should i play Dredge or Sadako".

Like others said above, her lunge is mechanically identical to everybody else’s with the same range. It probably just looks different in part because of her small size. But just pretend you’re the Doctor when you lunge in terms of range and speed and it works exactly the same.
As far as strategy goes:
- Sadako has solid map mobility because of her teleport, which makes hit and run and slugging a useful tactic for her. You can down someone and immediately get into a new chase even if the other survivors are across the map. So a good Sadako strategy is slug for pressure and focus mainly on hooking mostly just one survivor. You save yourself around 10 seconds or so slugging and going straight to another survivor versus carrying someone to a hook, so by intentionally not trying to hook literally everybody you can keep a lot of pressure going where survivors are either slugged or in chase or healing each other versus doing gens. Then once you finally get that one survivor you’ve been hooking killed the game is 3v1 and much more heavily in your favor.
- Assuming you do slug, perks that help with chases and slugging are useful, as is Jolt which works well when you are doing a lot of slugging versus hooking (since you get a lot of downs compared to a non-slug strategy). Sadako’s main weakness is once she’s in a chase she’s mostly a basic attack killer, so perks that can help you in a chase or that help you efficiently remove pallets, etc, can help you get downs and eliminate resources while you stall through slugging. So things like Save the Best for Last, Bamboozle, the new Dissonance perk on Dredge, Jolt as mentioned above, Sloppy Butcher, or even also Knock Out or Deerstalker can be useful. Also Dead Man’s Switch is good since it provides some slowdown without needed to do hooks or kick gens and happens naturally just by chasing people.
- If you do try the slug approach, one of her best add-ons is her Green add-on which makes it so a survivor who heals or revives another survivor that is Condemned gains a stack themselves. When you are intentionally slugging survivors this add-on significantly increases the rate survivors build up stacks because every single slug results in at least one or two additional stacks being applied (one for reviving the person and a second if they help heal the person to full.) That plus you teleporting more frequently since you’re spending less time hooking noticeably amplifies stack build up. It’s actually not uncommon because of that additional stack build up and all the pressure survivors are under to juggle healing each other and trying to do gens that someone lets the stacks get away from them and you get a Condemned kill out of it.
- Also the red add-on that instantly turns TVs on after a post-Manifest down is really solid, especially combined with that Green one above and slugging. It just makes it even easier to teleport basically at will and helps build up stacks even faster as a side bonus.
- In terms of Stealth, she’s solid but keep in mind that she has a non-directional Lullaby sound which survivors can hear. So they’ll know you’re in the area but not necessarily which direction. Likewise Spine Chill obviously is a popular perk and has kind of the same function where they’ll know you’re in the area but not necessarily where. Fortunately, though, Sadako has two nice features. First, she’s very short, which means you can more easily use terrain to block line of sight as you approach someone. Try to take advantage of that when approaching gens, coming up from being rocks and objects and things to disguise your approach. And second, she’s invisible on and off while Demanifested. Obviously it’s not perfect, survivors can see you on and off as well, but it does make it so if you are only briefly in their line of sight there’s a decent chance you will happen to be invisible at that moment, granting you a bit of an extra buffer to succeed at sneaking up on people.
- Finally, as a minor tip, you can use her Invisibility sometimes midchase to enhance your mindgame. Basically if you’re at a loop that you’re sure the survivor is going to stay at, you can Demanifest and then, when they can’t see you behind the wall or object you’re looping, Manifest again and switch directions. Because you are invisible and Undetectable for a second or two after Manifesting they won’t know you switched directions and might run straight into you. It’s a situational tactic and not foolproof but it works well as a mindgame tool.
Hope this help!

I'm so glad so many players speaking for Sadako. She is really nice killer.
As for the topic, TatsuiChiyo put it very nicely. I only can add what I do:
I'm always in invisible mode, unless i'm hitting a survivor in a couple of seconds. Without red stain they tend to do some mistakes and that's most of the time enought to get a hit.
She is really benefit from slugging. Down one survivor and hook much worse than injure 3 or 4 of them. Slug two, if you don't see anyone around to chase or don't know which gen to interrupt, then hook.
She is incredibly perk and addon dependent. I run Bamboozle to shut down most of the loops, but some guy another thread suggested pallet-grinding perks. Anyway, the idea is to compliment her with perks that help her in chase somehow, as she can't do much without them.
STBFL also is very good perk on her.
Also a good idea is to throw in some gen slowdown perks (I like Surge, as I do more downs then hooks).
Some addons like when survivors spreading curse while healing can help you very much, as they will start to go for TVs, but playstyle will completely shift to heavy slugging (which I don't like very much, personally).
Tricky part is to understand which side TV is and can you use it midchase. If can, use it, it benefit a lot.
Also you better pay attention which TV is suddenly turned off without your help. Maybe survivors slamming gen there, or picked up the tape, always good time to pay them a visit.
In general: no long chases, you should be everywhere at once. Most of my matches survivors only heal themselves all the time.
I hope she get's boost from devs. She deserves.

It helped alot!

Thank you guys for your help. I was finally able to full use her against a group and basically used a little bit of a Freddy and Wrath combo play.
Her lunge felt off because I’m used to these huge movements from the killers but she is very much not into that. But thanks to a few of you I’ve found my groove with her.
My last question. Does she suffer from lightburn?
0 -
She doesn't, thankfully.
