Boil Over - Abuse or Legit Tactic?
So I was playing on Eyrie of Crows last night against an obvious 3 player SWF (All same survivor model and all had "Boil Over" ) and one Solo player.
First SWF survivor I chase and they lead me up to the second story balcony area of the building to the furthest point away from an exit you can get. I down them, pick them up and they jump off shortly after I reach ground level before I can hook. (Way before.) I chase them back to the same spot a couple more times with the same result no matter what I did differently.
All the while three gens pop. (Shame on me for focusing on the one survivor.)
Anyway, on the last down I decide just to leave them bleed out and leave.
Lo and behold, I chase their friend right back to the same place where they managed to heal the downed survivor and proceeded to teabag me daring me to hit them. So I downed them and chased the friend who you guessed it - ran right back to the same spot.
I managed to down both of them, then their 3rd friend came in for the save, only I got lucky and downed all three right in the same spot.
Smiling and no longer raging, I went to find the solo player and had a blast running around farming BP with him. He saw what the SWF was doing and after game thanked me for not killing him and getting him a bunch of BP.
Sorry for the long story, but MAN was that satisfying to let all three bleed out.
Not sure if using "Boil Over" the way they did is considered an exploit, but its really frustrating to be complete powerless to a SWF using this tactic all the while teabagging. ( I honestly got lucky being able to down them all.)
Anyone else run into this?

Once and yes it’s an exploit imo. Obviously impossible downs to hooks should not be a thing and this isn’t the only place you can abuse it, just the most well known. GL getting any action on it though.
Lucky you didn’t run into the no mither variant because then bleeding them out doesn’t work.

It's a legit perk.
If it was abusable or exploitable right now it would have been kill switched.

I ran into that yesterday. They even chose the damn map (the one with the big building in the center and you can run up the metal stairs to that upstairs room, they ran into the corner of the room every time where I physically could not get them to a hook fast enough Edit: Googled it, THE MACMILLAN ESTATE when you get RNG'ed and get no hook or basement in the main building) and ran up there. They knew exactly what they were doing.
I don't think I'd call it an exploit since it's within the rules of the game and designed that way in the same way that when I babysat them for four minutes to bleed them out for their sins wasn't an exploit either.
It's a lot rarer now with the Boil Over nerf but is absolutely still happens.

No. It's a perk, not an exploit. The nerf it got only further reinforces that. Just slug.

Ah, a happy ending.
Trying to go down in high places with Boil Over isn't abuse, but when you see map offerings and survivors straight-up camping a spot instead of giving any pretense at a chase - at that point, I would call it abuse. There's no game interactivity in always running to a certain spot and being unable to be hooked, and it's pretty exploitative. When I see my teammates doing that, I won't sandbag them, but I won't help them either (unless the killer 'started it' in the eternal war of players being dicks.)
Luckily, I think Eyrie, Garden of Joy, and sometimes RPD are the only places it works anymore, thanks to the 33%-current-progress necessitating a long walk before the drop rather than just any high area that was far away from stairs.

If you turn your camera in time with how Boil Over sways you from left to right in exaggerated fashion it actually gets you to hooks faster.

Yeah i went against that 2 days ago. This is so frustrating to go against.

RPD offering + Boil Over = camp and slug
they did not come for a normal game, nor will I give them one.
bleed out Kate. and David, just gonna stand here next to you while you hit the end of second stage.

It's a perk

You just gave me a brilliant idea for if I ever run into a group of players all trying to use that Boil Over tactic.

I had a no mother variant on crotus Penn asylum. It was just was 1 survivor that had it but I ended up slugging them everytime they got themselves up. Followed them pretty much all match but God it was satisfying. The others tried to help but it was too late.

So ever thought of just dropping down to the first floor the moment they would wiggle free, so they get staggered and you can down them on the first floor pretty easily? Not? Think about it.

The problem with Boil Over is it’s basically useless so people dismiss it as an issue but if used by a SWF with a plan- notably exploiting maps with high areas or a sabo squad- it can be a real nuisance.
As others have said, slugging is the best option.

It’s a very unfun tactic to go against. It’s fair but not enjoyable to go against at all, but the same can be said with some tactics killers use.
1 -
I must not be understanding what you mean.
The stun you get from them wiggling free gives them plenty of time to run back upstairs even if you could somehow force them to fall after wiggling free and they stagger.
The point is that they aren't trying to get away - they are simply wanting to run back upstairs to the impossible hook area.
1 -
Huh? It's what it was designed to do. If that particular area is too strong then the devs can fix it somehow, but it's not abuse.

While I think it's a legitimate tactic, if you're running it in coordination with a SWF to pull out all the stops to deny a single hook, then you have to be prepared to face the consequences of that tactic.
I went against a 4-person team recently -- everyone with Boil Over, one No Mither player, multiple people bringing Breakdown, one Saboteur, multiple sabotage toolboxes, an Exponential Boon, AND an RPD map offering to top it off. Once I found someone, it turned into multiple people running upstairs into the library (and into the Boon's range -- the totem wasn't actually in the library, so it wasn't an easy stomp to get rid of it). I pretty quicky realized the match wasn't going to be fun for anyone.
Ended up mass slugging anyway, eventually getting someone out of the library and onto the hook in the middle of the main room (our of range of the Boon), then further away from the Boon and into the hallway corner off of the main room. As someone who NEVER does this, I face-camped the person on the hook -- I was playing Nemesis and had 8 stacks of STBFL at that point, so someone was either dying or they were going to be constantly hook-trading. Ended up killing 3 of them (last got a lucky hatch).
I can't imagine it was much fun for anyone. Even though I "won", it was more tedious than entertaining (though more fun than if they had all escaped and I'd never gotten a hook). It's borderline exploiting a terrible map design that makes the library "can't get me to a hook" a thing, but since there's a very unfun way to deal with it, when I run into those type of teams, I just have to adjust and get my hands dirty if need be,

Was playing survivor and my Nea teammate brought Eerie of Crows offering along with Boil Over, Flip Flop, Unbreakable, Tenacity. Whenever Cenobite started chasing her she'd immediatly go upstairs in main building and go down in a particular spot so he couldn't hook her.
At endgame I just bodyblocked her near the gates so she got downed and hooked. Screw exploiters like that.
1 -
Just leave them slugged up there. Their bleedout timer saves until they are hooked. They'll eventually simply die very quickly after being downed and left there a few times.

I ran into a squad last night who did that and then hit me off afterwards.
I don't know if it's an exploit, it depends on whether or not you're supposed to be able to hook people after you down them.

Tired of people calling a perk for what is it described to do as an exploit then getting it so nerfed that there is no longer a reason to use that said perk anymore....
People make builds that can be outrageous doesn't make it an exploit just means they were using their resources to the best of their abilities
It is like someone calling all the slowdown gen perks an exploit because it was used to slow down the game
Edit: someone using their camera to use the momentum of boil over to get to the hook faster would be considered an exploit in this scenario because the perk is to help the survivor not the killer
0 -
You must be a killer main if you think any combo of perks that is meant to help a survivor survive is considered an exploit and also breaking game rules to kill off a different survivor you didn't like for using perks
0 -
It's a meme perk after the nerf it doesn't work in normal situations you will always end up on a hook before you can wiggle off so it's only usable in certain areas of maps where you can't reach hooks quickly enough.

I consider it tactic, I mean Boil Over means hard struggling, people have to be able to reach the spot to be affective, such as my Lithe isn't capable unless I can reach a vaulting spot. BUT. If I am a killer, you are either bleeding out or I am camping your butt because obviously you like the playstyle of laying on the ground and not being carried.
0 -
Yep. I had the same thing a week ago. After the 4th down on the same person, I just sat there and waited for them to die since I had the game basically under control.
1 -
It's a legit perk, but also one that can still be used to play like a dbag.
You will still run into players who don't try to do objectives in favor of trying to lure you into upstairs corners. It's not busted like it was, but it can still be used to harass and frustrate.
And the stank of the exploit is still on it for right or wrong. When I pick someone up and they have BO, my first thought is...unkind. And if I can I will down them when they are near a hook, tunnel or no, ngl.
I don't think there's anything wrong with running it, but survs who do shouldn't surprised if they get slugged.

In that instance? That's just you being outplayed

It's a perfectly legit tactic to bleed-out.
