How do hook grabs work?

How does DbD decide what is a hook grab and what isn't? What role does latency play?

I have extremely good internet and when matched with the West Coast server my ping is 50 or less.

Whenever I go for a hook grab as killer I almost never get it the survivor almost always cancels the unhook and I get a normal attack.

As survivor I get grabbed going for a hook save more than I'd like to admit.

In my most recent game I was up against a Blight and I was trying to save a survivor from the hook who was about to die and I went in and tapped M1 to unhook, just threatening to unhook so I'd get hit and not grabbed and it that sliver of a moment Blight ripped be off that survivor like a old dry scab and carted me off to a hook while Ace died. I didn't even think a insta-grab like that was possible. I know Doc used to be able (is still able?) to do some funky stuff to get hook grabs but for a Blight?

What did I do wrong here and how did I get grabbed so easily?

Game just hates you. Only way to put it other than him lagging at the most convenient time.

Couldn't tell you. It's some unholy lovechild of latency and Murphy's Law; it mainly works as long as you're not the one doing it.

At least hook grabs reliably translate into a hit. Pallet grabs almost always get validated into me swinging at the pallet...

Though actually, I had a hook grab today that sounds like your Blight. I was Blight too, but I don't think I was your Blight because this survivor was still on first stage and I was just following someone dumb enough to lead me back to the hook. I wasn't even trying to grab, and on my screen, Kate hadn't even started the unhook animation, but the hit yoinked her up anyway. So I'm sure the discrepancy between the server, survivor, and killer plays a big part of why you always seem to get screwed over - anything you're visually reacting to happened half a second ago.

Quite literally just bad luck my friend . It SHOULD have worked the way you described where it's not a grab but just a normal hit . Latency on either the players or the servers side, and the best luck on the killers part for that match is pretty much it.
