Why hasn't been a survivor that isn't modern times
It dawned on me also because I saw someone also say this why is there no survivor from the western era or just some time that isn't modern even the video I watched they said it even with the fake someone might say well how would they know how to fix a gen.
Simple answer how would
An athlete, botanist, office worker almost every survivor know how to fix a gen closest to know would be Yui, and possibly Bill.
Yui for the fact she worked with machines before that and Bill more then likely had military training for it.
But I think they could have someone from the past be a survivor since the new chapter is coming out maybe the survivor is going be from the past.
Also I say new chapter because I don't know if BHVR said it yet but if you know what I'm talking about then it makes sense.

Cool suggestion, since some of the killers are from a long time ago, especially plague. It would be nice to see some survs from historical times. Guess bhvr wants to keep them relatable, and i would say that canonically survs taken by the entity get used up eventually, canonically benjamin baker taken in the 1800s has written about seeing more modern survivors.
It would be cool because you could have some more survs who are directly linked with their killers. Like it'd be cool to see bayshore, or one of deathslingers bounty targets as a surv. Or perhaps a 16th century french character linked with the twins.

I like that in Trickster, he feels VERY modern almost futuristic.

I just want a "mother" as a killer and there kid as the survivor. Some generational trauma or something for lore

Ooh maybe one of the kids huntress kidnapped? That would make for a super cool backstory. Like maybe they could've escaped her then ended up in the entities realm after wandering the woods.

I read supposed leaks that the new survivor would be from the past. Obviously, it's just a leak, so may not be true, but it'd be fun were it accurate.
Aside from that, they could certainly go back as far as the Age of Enlightenment for survivors. Maybe even further! Leonardo di Vinci was an engineer, architect and scientist, alongside his paintings, and came up with some (at the time) crazy and forward-thinking ideas, so no reason why he'd struggle with gens, given practice. And he was born c.1400s!

I guess there's degrees of acceptable 'suspension of disbelief'. Sure most people wouldn't be able to fix a broken generator, but if they're from the 20th century onwards they'd at least know what one was and what it's purpose is.
Not a hard and fast rule, a survivor from the past could absolutely work, but it may be why they haven't considered it yet.
I'd prefer a survivor from the future personally, but that's because I have Ellen Ripley in mind specifically.

Unofficially the devs have said they won't do any original characters from beyond the "modern" era.
Their view on it is that Survivors should be relatable and sympathetic characters, so the player can understand them and be more invested.
Personally I think that's nonsense, but it is what it is. Hopefully they change their minds about that like they did with their old stance on adding a Clown Killer. I'd love a Survivor character who's from a year prior to 1950.
WW1 era, so early 1900s.
Personally I'd love to see either a soldier who faced her and escaped or one of her 'adopted' daughters who escaped. Characters with lore connections to pre-existing characters are generally some of my favorite additions.
