Was old Freddy any good?
I starting playing when Freddy had to pull survivors into the dream world but I rarely did actually play him only for his adept or just overall minor things but I never really focused on him so I just want to know was he ever good back then.

Some people really liked his unique playstyle but he was overall considered one of the worst killers in the game

No, he was the worst Killer in the game back then.
He would do really well against new players who didn't understand how his power worked, but against even decent players he got decimated.
The people that liked him never liked him for his strength, rather it was his unique playstyle and design that drew them in.

Nope. Worst Killer by far.
The only thing he was okay at was finding Survivors. He had zero map control potential, and his power was an active detriment in chases.
He wasn't even that fun to play as or against. I'll never understand why people want him back when modern Freddy is just so much better (even if he too is still not that great).

I don't think its fair to say a flat no.
I did not try him much so I cannot protest to this but big old freddy mains will argue otherwise, there was just a different way to play him from the normal. If you played him like most other killer then yes, "worst killer by far"

I would say that old Freddy was to DBD as Phoenix Wright was to UMvC3.

He was and has been the only killer that can't hit you untell he does something. 7 seconds thats how long it took Freddy to become your standard m1 killer bit on for the one survivor. So to awnser your question not he was quite LITERALLY worse then an m1 killer.

It sucked so much to put someone in the dream and having to wait X seconds to actually be able to hit them, jeez

Here's my take from being an og old freddy main since his release.
Old freddy was bad but he was IMO the most unique killer ever made.
IMO these 2 things is what freddy was good at:
- Arguably the best stealth killer in the game
- the dream transition if played correctly would 90% always get the first injure on the survivor.
besides those really, he was bad but fun to play as so i didn't care.

Those were dark times to not be a Freddy main entity bless your soul.

Definitely was the most unique killer in the game...but also was the worst. I suggest looking up some old gameplay of him on youtube. You'll see first hand what his gameplay was like.

You wanna talk about slowdown, the guy gave a 50% speed penalty to asleep survivors; and the only ways to wake up were from an awake teammate (I actually really liked this, it was so thematic of the movies) or failing a skill check. And infinite aura reading on asleep survivors. Not to mention that most survivors were still hiding and scared of being found by the killer in this era of the game.
I don’t think he was as bad as people make him out to be.

he could've used a bit of work but it felt like freddy. I used to scare the ever loving daylights out of people.

His design was just not well balanced for dbd. 50% action speed slow and aura reading on alseep survivors were huge things to just have basekit.
The trade off was he couldn't attack awake survivors which lead to situations of freddy being unable to do anything about unhooks. Oh and he was basically just a m1 killer because all his power was, was put survivors to sleep.
Was he bad? I lean yes. He was pretty easy to exploit if you knew what you were doing and self care actually countered him because all you needed to do was fail a skill check mid chase and he had to put you back to sleep. His kit was more of a noob stomper. If you didn't understand what he did, it would be easy for him to just destroy you.

He wasn't strong at all but he was the most unique killer in the game by far.

7 seconds to become an m1 killer per survivor. Most survivors ran self care back then because it was the second strongest perk in game it healed you in 16 seconds I belive and standard healing time was something like 12. So you would put a survivor to sleep after 7 seconds in which point they would be at one of the many many safe loops and then you would half to do the loop thing and if you get a hit the just speed boost to the next loop and start SC and miss a skill check and guess what you got to put them back to sleep because you can hit them.
He was definitely unique but he was a noob stopper and that was it. There's a reason he held the title for weakest killer in the game as long as he did and the second weakest wasn't even close because they didn't have to wait 7 seconds to become an m1 killer.

I don't agree with the opinion that he was the worst killer in the game. He wasn't top tier, but he was really solid. Once you learned how to play the Dream Transition and micromanage sleep well, he was actually kind of a force to be reckoned with. I've played him against good players, and I didn't feel helpless.
I think the reason he got a bad reputation was due to his different playstyle (micromanaging sleep was very important), and the fact that the Dream Transition (his main chase power) didn't have a tell to the Freddy player in-game. You had to look up the timings yourself to use it effectively. If BHVR had added a visual indicator to show your visibility to a survivor falling asleep, then I think people would've regarded Freddy much better.
It really is a shame, because with a couple of QoL changes, his fullest potential would've been available to any player, and not just those dedicated enough to do external research themselves.
I hope they bring him back one day.

I say this as someone who used to main old Freddy. If you think some killers like Legion are repetitive now, they'd seem fun in comparison to old Freddy. You would *constantly* be slowed down or have to wake up against a good Freddy. It was brutal. His chase capability was worse than Sadako.
About to down a survivor near the end of the game? Better hope they don't have Adrenaline, because they heal AND wake up, at which point you have to dream transition again before you can even hit them. Chasing a survivor? Pre-drop a pallet, Self-Care skill check to wake up. Now you can't hit them until you put them back asleep. Approaching a survivor about to finish a gen? You put them to sleep, they finish the gen before you can hit them, and they wake back up with Adrenaline so you still can't hit them. He was awful

He was a noob stomper. He completely decimated stealth so if you couldn't loop he would destroy you and he was good at exploiting weak links but if everyone was a somewhat decent looper he just turn matches into slowdown slogs where he was more likely to bore you to death than hook you to death.

I discovered DBD a year after his rework so I unfortunately didn’t experience old Freddy :(

No. Although he wasn't as bad as most people make him out to be. You had to play him strategically and with game sense. I'd do anything to have him back

"He would do really well against new players who didn't understand how his power worked"
Can't you say that about literally every killer in the game?

Don't forget he synchronize well with old dying light. Hell I remember bringing in dresses with skill check build.

He was a noob stomper, some addons along with slowdown perks were oppressive (Forever freddy) and his infinite aura reading kinda made him a tunneling machine unless you were lucky enough to have adrenaline or have a medkit with skillcheck increase, so you could fail a skillcheck mid chase.
You can consider him as legion v 2.0 when it comes to boring gameplay on both sides.

Man, I don't think people even remember his initial release or knew the trends, and how miserable he could make it for survivors. The play was to slug with Knockout, Nurse's, and you had built-in mapwide Deerstalker-- survivors needed to be woken up, then healed.. and if you were paying attention, you could potentially keep them slugged until they bled out. At the very least, games would last a long time and it was pretty rough on solo queue. It was obnoxious, and as people caught on, you would see more bitching in endgame chat or more people DCing. Very annoying to go against and of course very fun to play as. Haha.
This iteration didn't last long so I guess BHVR listened to feedback, and I think he was changed a couple weeks later to what most people think of as original Freddy. As far as him being any good. Ehh. He was good against the average DBD player, just like most every other killer. Take that for what it's worth.
The biggest thing I miss about Freddy though is getting flashlight saves against him when he was invisible. You were hot ######### if you could pull it off.

In terms of strength Freddy was in a bad spot. He was simply too weak to compete against any decent team.
However his kit was quite unique and he felt completely different from other killers. He was definitely more fun to play as than he is now.
