When your the last survivor can you open the exit gate straight away or have to wait for

^^^^ the hatch to close for some reason i always thought you have to wait for the hatch to close first be for opening the exit gate as survivor?

If the generators are all powered you can always open the gates. But in the event they are not, you have to wait until the hatch is closed.
