Arc Barrier + Spike Drive/Phoenix Pod/Flash Barrier = EZ MODE
Arc barrier feels like dead hard but only with a 8.5 seconds cooldown and grants you bonus invulnerability if you achieved a perfect block. That's so crazy it makes brutal, dangerous and normal outposts easy mode. If you want it even easier, pick one of the 3 aforementioned gadgets with the arc barrier and then you'll laugh your ass off at killbox outposts.
Grappling hook works with Arc Barrier so the game is a breeze.

Then build around that. Make a base that aims specifically at slowing down and hitting over longer periods.
One of the upcoming Boltshot Mod aims at shooting bolts over a longer period of time. At some point the Barrier gets on cd.

Arc barrier does little to piston paths and meat walls

"...And then you'll laugh your ass off at kill-box outposts..." here is a solution, do not make a kill-box outpost to begin with.
When making a base, you have to plan around every possible thing, Arc Barrier severely limits what other weapons they can bring, so most people use Melee since it is reliable... so spread out your traps more, this combo suffers heavily when they are forced to deal with ranged things.
Also youll definitely need to use Death Pistons, one of the most underrated traps in the game, since they have the ability to slowdown the pace of players and force them to move slow, which also counters Arc Barrier since it only destroys Death Pistons upon the piston extending out.

kill rooms are required to counter ammo and slow gameplay.
ranged spam is required to counter melee only builds.
fakeouts and sloped terrain is required to counter rush tacticss.
there is a reason to the madness.

That's funny, because Akimbo build (2x ranged) deals quite nicely with kill rooms, by slowly dismantling all types of it and being able to disarm two or three hooks at once, due to ranged "parry" ability of your anti-guard xbow.

those aren't used in kill rooms. a kill room is a room that overwhelms the player with bombs, fire, bolts, and plasma that are set to activate at the same time and are hidden behind stealth blocks.
you're talking about a gauntlet if anything. completely different.

Are you saying that the anti-flesh ranged weapon, which only damages un-armored fleshy targets, can also destroy grabbing hooks?

Yes, it can destroy hooks that are already in flight or when they already grabbed you. They can shot down enemy projectiles in general, including bolts from boltshots (good luck hitting them); hitboxes in this game are actually quite impressive. So if you are cornered and a cannonball shots at you, you can fire at the bomb and neuter it...
