Should brown addons be bad or am I just a nerd?
Imho, addon strength should go browns < yellows < greens < purples < iris, I think that makes sense right? And in that regard, I think browns should generally not be great addons. I don't at all mean they should be useless, because nothing that you can equip should be useless, but some killers straight up have browns as their best addons, and I don't think that makes any sense.
Meanwhile there's addons like legion's mischief list, ghostface's philly, demogorgon's black heart, twins's toy sword, artist's thick tar, knight's map of the realm, and probably a lot more addons that are brown and yet stand out a lot over most of their other addons, while some of them even feel necessary to play the dang killer (looking at you motr)
Then on the other end you have iri addons like huntress's soldier's puttee, hag's waterlogged shoe, pyramid head's obsidian goblet, oni's iridescent family crest, and I think a few more that are just completely useless. Why do we have brown addons making a killer playable and iri addons making a killer unplayable?
I think a really good standard for a brown addon is the wraith's "The Serpent" - Soot addon which makes you automatically unclock when kicking something. It's nice you know? It's a unique effect as opposed to being like "increases dumb stat by 1%." Not crazy beneficial, not crazy useless, cute effect that has a solid spot in builds.
Pls don't go commenting "omg so u hate killers and want all their addons to be useless?" bc that'd be monumentally cringe ⭐

I feel brown add-ons are at their best when looking at Trapper and Wraith. They offer small yet interesting ways to play the game. I also like the meme ones with the extra BP.
So little changes like Trapper being able to not get caught on a trap or Wraith revealing itself after breaking a pallet - those little changes really do suit the add-ons.

Iris are either supposed to be very strong or to change the playstyle heavily. In that, Waterlogged Shoe has its place in iris, especially since in good iris you also have Mint Rag.
Brown addons should be addons that are either a small buff that's overshadowed by other addons (Rope Necklet vs Cypress Necklet) or something that makes playing the killer easier for beginners without changing the playstyle too much.
I think most brown addons are very much ok, and if a killer is bringing brown addons, then great ! They're not picking stronger stuff =)

Good point about changing play style and waterlogged shoe, but it'd be nice if said play style was like, at all better or at least good

Agreed! I have a big appreciation for addons that aren't just number changes or status effects, I think they're really cool when they offer a real change

I like it when brown add ons change stats that no other add on does like legions friendship bracelet increasing the frenzy lunge by a little

So you'd rather have the addons that make a Killer "Playable" locked behind a lot of Bloodweb RNG and Bloodpoint investment?
I'd prefer the unique playstyle altering addons be rarer, given that if a player gets a lot of them in the first place, they likely invest in that character more.
Whereas making the more common addons base-line improvements better suit players that have minimal investment.
I should also clarify, that IMO rarity shouldn't simply mean "strength" of an addon, just how much it diverges from the normal kit.

I think the problem is rarer add-ons try to throw curveballs with interesting and more noticeable effects but unfortunately in a game with huge time pressure the add-ons that simply buff your stats are gonna be favoured.

I think that's how it's intended, but it turns out that what BHVR might think is strong in paper and therefore iridescent might not actualy be as good in practice.
Either that or what people are saying above, which is that it just changes the playstyle without making it a matter of power level.

Hahaha I can't argue with that ! Hag has a lot of addons that change her power in big ways, but the two that prevent from teleporting are very memey. I'm sure good players can make them work, and I'm kinda glad they exist just for the unexpected factor.
I'll have to try them out at some point ! I've always played Hag with yellow addons to get used to her normal playstyle, but it must be really amusing throwing on a more unique build like Waterlogged / Scarred Hand. ^^
