One of the worst buffs in DbD history
Calm Spirit
As you may know, in the patch 6.1.0 the Perk got a "buff" which made opening Chests and cleansing/booning Totems silent (mostly, will get to that), but at the cost of having 30% debuff to those speeds to compensate...
In reality this "buff" is a hard nerf, because the silent action speed doesn't matter at all, in the time the Killer would have heard the bone rattling / lock pulling sounds you would most likely be exposed to their LoS anyways, making this a detriment to use due to the low action speed.
Also, the silent actions are not true for chests, after you fully complete the action the chest opening sound still plays, making this aspect of the Perk completely worthless.
I understand what their thought process was with this buff, you're a calm spirit, you take your time to do certain things more quietly, that's why the 30% debuff to the action speeds, but in gameplay this doesn't translate well at all.
What can be done?
In my honest opinion, I think the part of the Perk that was added in the Patch 6.1.0 should be activate-able, so you can choose to have slow action speeds for quiet cleansing / chest opening and you're not forced into it.
For example the Perk description could be:
Calm Spirit
Animals seem to trust you as they often stay calm in your presence.
Woodland creatures are not alerted in your presence. (Could just mention crows, also no need for percentages if it's always 100%)
Press and hold the Active Ability Button while cleansing/blessing Totems or opening/rummaging through Chests to slow these action speeds by 40/35/30%, but they're silent. (Could be even slower, because it's now activate-able)
Allows you to overcome the urge to scream.
The Perk should also allow you to pet Maurice but that's besides the point.

I wouldn't call it a buff. It was kinda rework / adjustment. It was big nerf.

I don't think it needs the slowdown at all to be honest.
Being able to cleanse a totem or open a chest silently is not a particularly big advantage.

Calm spirit's effects aren't strong enough to require a downside, BVHR should just delete the slowdown altogether.
However, I 100% agree it should allow us to pet Maurice.

I mean, it was meant to be a buff, but it failed quite a lot haha.

And in the same patch they "buffed" Pharmacy by making it only work while injured, so now you dont even get the faster unlocking chest speed while you are healthy.
4 -
Even if they remove this penalty from perk, i doubt Calm Spirit will be popular. It never was and it never will.
And they are curious why nobody is using these garbage perks. Who will want to use this perk for small reward but with big penalty.

Yeah it was definitely a nerf. You're getting punished for participating in gameplay by equipping it. For me though, I really really hate the screaming perks. My ears can't stand them, especially on top of the hook screams. Too much screaming. So I've been using it alot lately and while it's still mediocre, it's worth not having to deal with the screaming.

It could be just silent without the slow and be a bad perk. Just dont scare crows and be silent opening chest and doing totems.
4 -
It's not a buff or a nerf, you're trading one advantage (speed) for another (silence) and that can be a useful trade.
I've had many cases where I've been cleansing a hex totem, a survivor has run the killer near me, I'm entirely out of LoS, but the killer hears the bones and interrupts me.

the negative is specific there for you to not use the perk. it is same with pharmacy change. they buffed both perks but put negatives to discourage you from using them.

Itβs interesting to me how anytime people criticizes an element of survivor gameplay (like awful perks), you have an example of a time when that perk or feature just totally saved the day for you. Itβs a convenient pattern Iβve noticed in your responses.

It's almost like not everything is black and white and gameplay experiences are incredibly varied.
And for your information, I've also criticised killer gameplay today as well.
But if it helps you to pigeonhole me as a filthy killer main you do you.

My idea back then was that the Debuff and silent Cleansing/Chest Opening is only applied while in the Killers Terror Radius. Because if the Killer is far away, you wont need to be silent, but once you are in their TR, you are silent but have the Debuff. (Which also would make sense since you would be more careful to not make sounds, which results in you being slower)... Would also be a nice thing for Stealth Killers who would counter this.
However, choosing if you want to search silent and take the Debuff or just search normally is also a good idea. Would make the Perk more attractive for people who want it for the main purpose (not screaming) without giving Debuffs to them.
But honestly, I am agreeing to @OnryosTapeRentals ... They can just remove the Debuff. It is not really that big of a thing to cleanse Totems or open Chests without making sound and if it would make the Perk more attractive and leads to more variety, who not.

Of course this can happen, once every like 60 games.
You could say this about any Perk to be honest, if I had this very specific Perk at this very specific situation, it could have saved my life, but in the other 99% of games it would actively hurt you or just take a Perk slot.
Also the disadvantage is much greater than the advantage in this situation.

Thing is, to open chests being injured, you have to be able to escape chase injured, which is harder because blood, grunt.
Or getting unhooked, but why should you spend running around finding a chest, open for 8sec, get a medkit, self healing for 24sec. While you can stay under hook and have your teammate heals for 16sec.
Im used to use Pharmacy to get a Green medkit with good addon (Ace in the hole) and give to a teammate and save alot of time. Now how Pharmacy works combined with Medkit nerf, the perk is dead.

Alternatively, I had a game today where a Plague had Devour Hope and I was the only one who bothered to look for it, and I found it sitting right out in the open on Borgos map. Of course she could see it easily from a distance, and of course Calm Spirit made it a PITA to try cleanse (I couldn't do it). The silence really didn't help me there.

I made a discussion about this not long ago and it ended with an extremist killer main starting their nerf calm spirit campaign under my post.π I'm still traumatized.

"That one time I got value from x perk so it isn't absolute garbage!"βοΈπ€

I'm still traumatized.
Why should you even care about him?

I remember thatβ¦all of those aura, scratch marks, grunting, blood, crows (in order from strongest to weakest), remove the crows tracking is op because denying an entire tracking way.
Im still waiting for their answer that Light borne deny an entire defending way..

And the long paragraphs explaining how Calm Spirit is the real cause of 3-gen? I still see it in my dreams.π

A real (fair) buff to Calm Spirit would silence Killer specific sounds affecting you. Vomiting from Plague/RE infections? Silent. Beeping from a headtrap? Silent. Coughing from Clown gas? Silent. Victor screaming on your shoulder? Silent. All the mechanical considerations would still be true, they would just be quiet. For example if Plague had the Iri aura read when vomiting add-on, that would still function and read the Survivor aura, but you just wouldn't hear the puking sounds.

I remember a while ago in this forum someone said Calm Spirit was too strong because it doesn't alert the crows, and the crows is a detrimental way to spot survivors, and removing that is too much.

"Poised is not bad. How many times I was running the killer on my death hook, a generator popped and the killer lost me, saving the game?"
"Corrective Action is a good perk. There was a time when and 2 other survivors were doing the last gen, the gen was almost finishing and the killer was coming, the other 2 survivors let go of the gen but I lost 2 of my tokens and I managed to finish the gen. We wouldn't otherwise if they missed the skillchecks"
Just some jokes lol

We're running out of things to complain about... We really are in dark times my friend... π

Oh, that logic really killed me
1 -
i just want it to allow me to pet the birbs
3 -
Itβs the gaslighting for me. π πΎ π
1 -
So true, Calm Spirit should allow you to pet any animal in the trials tbh
3 -
Calm spirit is like killer having 5th perk now. The disadvantage is that big.
3 -
I don't think having an active ability is really necessary. Just make it silent with no penalty.
1 -
I may or may not have a crush on you Gentleman Fridge. Your posts always make me laugh.π₯

That would be the best option to be honest, I just wanted to keep what BHVR was going for, even tho gameplay wise it's kinda bad haha
