Dev Interview about iconic characters in DbD
Haven’t seen a thread about this and think it’s worth a discussion/shout out here!
very well done interview with Matthieu Cote and Dave Richard (though imo feels a little bit rushed in the cut?)
giving some insights to implementing these characters!
kinda implying that Ghost Face mask license holder was against Scream inclusion?? (Maybe I interpret that incorrectly)
ALSO can we finally get the survivors from the Release trailer?! Pretty please? Maybe as legendary characters for our original survivors

It's true. BHVR have created the Super Smash Bros. of horror and that could not have been an easy feat. Regardless, DBD is a special game that gives us all these different licenses in one gigantic world. It is a one of a kind feeling to play as one of these iconic characters against other just as iconic characters from different universes.
There is nowhere else you'll see Ash Williams, Laurie Strode, Jill Valentine and Ellen Ripley working together to escape Leatherface. And as weird as it sounds, it feels natural. Authentic. All these characters that don't exist in the same universe somehow still fit neatly into the world of DBD.
Well done BHVR. You truly did a pretty good job so far.

Apart from a couple of mistakes like how the guy who talks in the video says Nemesis infects Survivors with the G-Virus or the fact they didn't even cover Hellraiser, Project W & Stranger Things, it's otherwise a solid interview.

I will say this, Terrordrome: Rise of the Boogeyman might be the first game ever (albeit fan made) to bring all of the famous 80's & 90's mainstream horror icons & a few of the big cult classic horror icons together to fight each other between locations from their respective movies, and Mortal Kombat being the first official game ever to try and do what Terrordrome did except legally (granted, to a lesser degree without any movie locations for stages), but DBD is the first and currently only game ever to not only actively seek out these horror properties & icons to it's ever increasing collection, but to also let you play as said horror icons authentically.
It'll be interesting to see how high dbd can climb in popularity and if it can ever reach a high enough point in pop culture to become as instantly recognizable to the same degree most people would recognize Jason by his Hockey mask and Machete alone.
Regardless of anything, i'm riding this game to it's end to see how high it can fly and what it's legacy within horror will end up look like.

Also just for fun, i've been compiling a list for a while now of everything dbd have been the first to accomplish.
- The first game ever to legally and officially release Hellraiser content for a video game.
- The first game ever to have a Child's Play/Chucky crossover
- The game that officially debuted Pinhead's first appearance in a released video game and also being the first game ever to legally let you play as him.
- The first game ever to have Brad Dourif officially voice Chucky in a video game.
- The first game ever to have Doug Bradley officially voice Pinhead in a video game.
- The first game ever to have official Crypt TV content in a video game.
- The first (and currently only) game ever to have both Silent Hill & Resident Evil content together in the same game.
- The first game ever to let you play as Amanda Young from SAW.
- The first multiplayer game ever to let you play as Detective David Tapp.
- The first game ever that let's you play as Sadako Yamamura.
- The first game ever to let you play as characters like Laurie Strode, Quentin Smith and the version of Ash from Ash vs Evil Dead.
- The first game ever to create it's very own original ghostface character that isn't connected to scream nor is just an extra costume only and who's lore revolve around the ghostface moniker.
- The first multiplayer game ever to legally let you play as Michael Myers in an authentic way.
- The first game ever to official license Ringu and also create lore for it's character that have been considered a canon part of it's own lore by the license holder
- The game that officially debuted Nicolas Cage's first appearance in a video game.
If dbd manages to get either Pennywise, Candyman, Jason, Kayako, The Tall Man, then dbd will have managed to do the following.
- it'll not only be the game to debut Pennywise's first video game adaptation, but they'll also be the first game in almost 3 decades to release anything Stephen King related content in a video game as well as the first ever modern video game to even have any.
- It'll be the game that debuted Candyman, The Tall Man & Pennywise's first official video game appearances and also being the first game ever to legally let you play as them.
- It'll be first game ever to have both Sadako & Kayako in the same video game.
- The first game ever to legally and officially release Candyman, Phantasm & IT content for a video game.
- It will have accomplished what Mortal Kombat could not, It'll be the first game ever in existence to officially have every iconic old school slasher villain within the same game (If we ignore the fact that Freddy is not the OG version.)

At least there are so many chars left for DbD that they won´t run out of killers in the near future.
On the other hand they need that because of their 3 month release schedule.

I'm glad they talked about picking amanda instead of john kramer. Saw a thread a few weeks ago and i was very surprised that people unironically thought jigsaw could be a killer.

Oh yeah there are a couple of mistakes but nothing really standing out
i guess Stranger Things missing might be due to the timing and the Hellraiser licensing also was and still is kinda weird - hasn’t a dev confirmed there will not be any more cosmetics even though they were planned? Wouldn’t surprise me if this is the next license we will see removed…
Also nice list - some points are more or less redundant though?

They probably just thought about it on the surface level, aka assumed he'd be the killer because he's the main "villain". When people think of the "killer" from SAW, they think of John Kramer, not Amanda.

Nice to see how it all came together. They did a great job so far!

As far as i know, Cote did say no to when asked if we can still get more Hellraiser content last year (i think), so i guess not which is a shame as Pinhead's Gash will remain incomplete, however i really doubt the dlc is getting removed anytime soon and would be surprised (and bummed) if it actually did.
As far as the list goes, i mean you could say some of the points are redudant, i just personally prefer keeping it as vast as possible since i think that's more fun to do.

Sure thing, didn’t wanna sound destructive at all! It’s a neat list and nothing is exactly the same repeated.
and I didn’t wanna start a rumour about Hellraiser leaving, just saying I wouldn’t be surprised if it happens sometimes far off. Maybe with license renewal and all it might even be possible to still get new cosmetics/legendarys!

What nice comment to read. Thank you.
Also +1 for mentioning the Phantasm.

It's all good.
Also to be fair, if it ever does leave, i have a feeling people will pull a Stranger Things on Park Avenue & Clive Barker to bring back Hellraiser to DBD, since people don't like content that's unavailable, especially when it's full-fledged dlcs as seen with the Stranger Things dlc.
Phantasm is my most wanted license, The Tall Man is without a doubt (imo) one of the best & most iconic cult classic horror villains and his inclusion in DBD is more than warranted & deserved at this point.
Also outside the occassional fan games, there hasn't been a single official video game related to that franchise and with DBD being the Smash Bros of Horror, it might as well mark Phantasm's debut into video games.

Phantasm is a pretty deep cut, good call. Would love to see it. DBD needs to either jump for more niche/cult licenses like Phantasm or embrace modern horror (the only licenses originating from post-2004 are Stranger Things and Left 4 Dead)

Agree, we still got a good amount of cult classic villains and franchises to dig through, such as The Djinn from Wishmaster, Pumpkinhead, Blade from Puppet Master, Cropsey from The Burning, Matt Cordell from Maniac Cop or even Herbert West from Stuart Gordon's adaptation of Re-Animator to name a few, hell just Lovecraft related stuff in general hasn't been explored yet and that's public domain even.
There is still just so much left from pre-2000 to delve into before we even get started on modern horror.
That said, if we ever do get anything modern, then Malignant, Terrifier, Sinister, Pearl, Laid to Rest or even House of a 1000 Corpses + The Devil's Rejects are good places to start.
