I feel devs are releasing way too much paid cosmetics.
As title says, I feel devs are releasing way too much paid cosmetics. At the very beggining it was cool because they always released three variants which one of them was paid (and most of the times is was always the most good looking) and then the other two ones which were more simpler. Now they pretty much release only one variant which is a paid one and that's it. They even release entires collections (like the 90s one) which are paid ones. I know these are only cosmetics but it would be pretty neat to have a way to earn auric cells for free, or just do the old way which is releasing a paid one and two that you can get by playing. It sucks that for a paid game that barely runs on console (I know they will start to optimize it on spring, but at the time the game runs like it should be we got a long way to go) and a game that have so many dlcs they release so much paid cosmetics without even an option to get it for free. What do you guys think?

I agree with the variant but I don’t like the auric cell idea but I get what you mean they’re starting to release one variant with outfits that could definitely have another variant like urban nea it could of had blue hair instead of green and a black jacket instead of red so yeah the more variants the better

Yeah, at the beggining they kinda knew how to play it with three variants and all of that but they are starting to release only paid stuff, the only free stuff they gave us recently was the moonrise event. The 90s collection, the pizza guy Dwight skin, the tragic love collection and the hit books collection, all of them have been paid and it's the only stuff they have been released. And now since the 90s collection it's free for like a week and a half (which is obviously enough time to buy most of the skins) I feel they really aren't releasing free stuff. It would be cool if they would update all the collections they released and add two recolors to each one for at least be able to buy the skins, even if is a recolor.

Well once people buy the game the Devs don't make any money off of it until the next chapter and that's like 2-3 months. Cosmetics is their best form of getting paid and this is nowhere near as bad other games that force you to pay to win, pay to get by, or emotionally manipulate you into buying. I don't buy a whole lot of cosmetics but I always feel good about it, except my Nurse costumes, I play on PS4 and I regret buying those.

YEP I GET YOUR POINT. BUT THE LATEST COLLECTIONS HAVE BEEN ONLY PAID ONES AND THE DEVS STATED BEFORE RELEASING THE STORE THAT THEY WOULD RELEASE FREE ONES AND PAID ONES, IT WOULD BE A FRIENDLY CONSUMER MIX, AND THEY DID THAT, ONLY AT THE BEGGINING. NOW IM NOT COMPLAINING ABOUT THE CHOICE OF MAKING SOME OF THEM PAID ONES, THE OLD TRICK THEY USED OF RELEASING ONE PAID AND TWO FOR FREE WAS COOL, MORE THAN COOL WAS AWESOME. IM COMPLAINING ABOUT NOT HAVING A CHOICE OF GETTING FREE CONTENT. IT SUCKS WHEN DEVS PUT YOU IN THE SITUATION OF "IF YOU WANT THIS COOL SKIN YOU WILL HAVE TO PAY 10 DOLLARS OR YOU GET SCREWED". I REALLY WANT THE NEW SKINS THAT CAME OUT, BUT I RATHER FARM AND HAVE FUN FARMING THAN SPENDING 10 DOLLARS FOR EACH ONE (OR EVEN MORE). I HOPE THEY RELEASE RECOLORS OF THE LATEST COLLECTIONS FOR FREE OR PUT IT FOR IRIDISCENT SHARDS.
Edit: I don't know why the letters are so big lol, sorry about that.

Simply wait until a cosmetics that you like is purchasable with shards. Otherwise I think the devs are doing a fine job with keeping things auric cells only. There’s enough cosmetics to earn with shards. Also every now and then they make certain collection available for shards. However, it’s limited.
Once again cosmetics are a want not a necessity.

Once upon a time I thought similarly with Overwatch.
But let’s be honest: “cosmetics are a want not a necessity” is a conceit consumers tell ourselves when the game industry as a whole has abused our trust and wallets. Especially in games like Overwatch and dbd where there is very little way to differentiate and prove oneself, cosmetics eventually become status symbols.
The crappy capitalist corporatist behavior at Actiblizzard opened my eyes to this myth.
I think bhvr are more or less doing fine in this department (at least we have solid proof they care about this game and they’re continuously working on it) but I do think it would be wise if they lowered prices (I know I might be inclined to splurge more) and allowed more shard options, as well as making free base cosmetics such as giving Spirit some dang clothes and including Susie and Joey in the Legion.

In Overwatch you can't buy skins unlike dbd where you have to buy each one you want. And this is a huge difference that Overwatch has with dbd and is the reason why I like more the system of Overwatch than dbd one: You can get every skin you want for free if you work hard. If you played long enough and have most of the items in the game when you open a lootbox you earn credits all the time for duplicated items, and plus you can get credits by itself without the duplication thing. In dbd you get far less iridescent shards when you level up than what you would get if you would open a lootbox in OW, and besides the skins are far cheaper than dbd. I never buyed one lootbox in OW and I got all the skins that I want for the characters I want without speding a single dollar, in dbd they are starting to force you to buy recent skins if you want them instead of being a choice and that sucks.

Aye Comrade, these capitalist bourgeoisie are holding back the working classes with their fancy pizza boy skins and santa clowns! We demand the end of the cosmetics gap! Rise up comrades! Claim the paid skins that are rightfully yours!.... Or not, since they don't help in game and in reality hurt stealth gameplay. But you do you.

Well even if it hurts gameplay in your opinion players should have a free option just like they stated before they released the store. Besides, getting skins via farming is a good way to keep players playing the game after they release a new chapter.

In Overwatch, new skins are on a time limit and to get them for free you need to have spent a HUGE amount of time playing to rack up enough coins; it’s pretty much impossible to get more than 1 event legendary. In dbd, the skins will always be there.
Also Actiblizzard literally preyed on people’s good will to purchase a charity skin as a blueprint for selling limited time legendaries. Then there’s the owl. They made so much money from loot boxes and yet seemingly only a fraction goes into the actual game, and apparently that wasn’t enough to save 700 jobs (but it was, however, magically okay to pay heinously rich guys an obscene amount of money at the top.)
bhvr definitely has the more honest model for cosmetics, even if it’s not perfect.

Well im not gonna get into in the state of Activison-Blizzard (which is obviously bad), im talking about how the economy works. Also the only time limited skins are the event ones, and the new ones are the expensive ones, old ones are pretty cheap and if you are smart and save credits for the skins you want you can get them easily and plus the ones that should drop on the lootboxes. If you claim the arcade lootboxes and plus playing and leveling up you can get a lot of lootboxes. They don't have exclusive paid skins like dbd, that is something that makes a huge difference, in OW you can get them in one way or another, in dbd if its paid which are the vast majority of skins right now, you are screwed.

Cosmetics for Auric Cells (=Real Money) are fine in my opinion. They need to make money and Cosmetics are the best idea for that. You dont need them to play the game, they dont give you any advantage, but people can purchase them and support the game.
I mean, other games have something like Lootboxes, this is way worse.

With dedicated servers on their way I would expect much more paid for content than free. Those dedicated servers aren't going to pay for themselves with a single purchase of a game for years to come.
On this subject I can't blame the developer for having as much paid for content as they do. Dedicated servers will only make this worse.
Highly doubt the introduction of dedicated servers will solve more problems than they create.

Right. Cosmetics are a harmless way for them to keep the game going. If you want them, then by them. If you don't, don't.
1 -
I actually have the opposite opinion to the OP - I want more and more costumes / styles - no one is forcing anyone to buy anything and its not pay to win. so it's harmless

The skins are just a silly thing to have. Why does it matter if one person has a skin they paid for but another person can't. It's A Game. Enjoy it for what it is. If you want free skins, prestige! Bingo, 3 cosmetics on each survivor and killer for the low low price of free! That's a price even a Soviet Kommissar can get behind!
But me, I'm going to run around as mountain climber Kate and use my picks to climb over the wall and out of the match!

@fenshing
Whilst your running around with your ice picks I will be strutting my stuff as my leopard print Ace.

Well seeing that they could hold very well almost three years without money from cosmetics I don't know why it would be different now. Im pretty sure the game does well enough to hold the game very well plus the money that come from all the chapters and plus with the cosmetics now. I already said it but looks like I'll have to say it again, I don't care if they release paid cosmetics as long as there is a choice between one and another one free, hell just like before, I don't see why it's so complicated to do it like before. Again, not saying all cosmetics should be free, just do it like before so at least the consumer (us) would have the choice of spending money or just farm, and plus more recolors. It's a friendly consumer way to put cosmetics and is a win/win.

I don't personally care if they're paid only or earnable or just given.
But one thing i really liked was that they made you work for Cannibal's different faces.
I love stuff like that, feels like you're walking with an actual trophy.
Especially the Jake face.

I really liked the fact that you had to sacrifice special survivors to get their faces, it was pretty neat. Maybe they could do a system where you can find random cloth in chests and with that cloth you can buy skins. I doubt they would do that cause ya know, money comes first, but it would be cool to have it in the game.

Honestly the cosmetics are ridiculously over priced anyway.

This content has been removed.

Leopard print Ace is obviously OP. Too much intimation. Where mountain climber Kate is very balanced. Skins should really be redone to be more balanced like her. Maybe they can get that done between now and the Freddy rework!

The DLC isn’t necessary. The art teams direction and the programming teams direction are two, completely different teams, meaning they have their own objectives. The cosmetics don’t need to be paid for, in fact, some of these can be earned through playtime. It’s only a means of saving it up— but most of these items won’t affect gameplay, making it a want feature, rather than a need.
1 -
Umh, most of the cosmetics are paid, there are a very few which are the ones they launched on the beggining when the store just launched that you can get by playing.
0 -
It seems like the OP is completely ignoring the option to use shards to unlock cosmetics. OP also ignores events that allow players to unlock cosmetics free of charge. Given those options, there are actually not that many cosmetics that can only be bought with Auric Cells. It's actually quite a generous system imho.
0 -
And there I go again. Shards are used to buy a very few cosmetics since most of the collections only come with one variant of the outfit and that means the only way to get them is spending 10 dollars each. And im pretty sure the event that let the players unlock stuff for free was now with the 90s collection, pretty sure they never did that before. But you know, it would be actually pretty cool have these events that could happen one time in one or two months where all the items in the store could be buyable with shards, that would let players be able to buy some skins and would let them save shards for the next free skins event.

@LoverKoalas23 It happened before. But it most likely only happens so that people spend their Shards on the Cosmetics and buy the DLC instead with real money.
Other than that, paid cosmetics are fine. The Devs need to make money, and honestly, every 3 montsh a new Killer/Survivor/Map is awesome.
In the end, you do not need any of those cosmetics to play the game. And things that are 100% optional can be expensive without any problem.

I do feel that devs selling cosmetics is okay. But lets look at the price. Ten dollars for a full outfit, or at least any of the outfits worth their weight in salt, with some exceptions. Ten dollars. That's more then the price of a chapter!
I can already here people saying "Don't like, then don't buy", or the ever classic "They have to make extra funds some how!" Here's the thing, though: I agree with both of those points. Fully and completely. I just feel that a full cosmetic outfit shouldn't cost more then a chapter.
If a full outfit was, lets say, 4-5 dollars, well lets just say I'd open up my wallet MUCH more often. They could easily lower it to that price, and more then likely make even more money then they do now from more people who wouldn't have opened their wallets otherwise, but they haven't. That tells me that either they are happy with the amount they make now from cosmetics, or, maybe they are afraid that a price drop will make them make less then they do now.
Maybe one day the prices will be changed, but for now, it is what it is.

Y'all, this is a non-issue. Chapters are very inexpensive, so are outfits? Don't believe me? Look at most games with DLC and most games with Cosmetics, they are way pricier than this game. Support the game please.

Then explain the bloodshards, and how cosmetics are not important to gameplay whatsoever.
