How dangerous is the basement really?

Yharwick
Yharwick Member Posts: 521

A lot of the discussion I've seen around Sable's perks is they're bas because they require you to go to the basement and the basement is the most dangerous part of the map and I have to say I don't really agree with that at all.

Realistically as killer unless you see someone with an aura perk or a gen is near the basement you pretty much never go in or even near the basement. You can't you just don't have time in between patrolling gens and chasing survivors. So where did this idea that going to the basement is dangerous come from?

Oh and while I'm at it for Strength in Shadow I've seen people say it's inefficient because travel time but lets be honest if that were true CoH wouldn't have needed to be nerfed to the point it no longer lets you self-heal.

I don't think the invocation is good but I do think Strength in Shadow and Wicked have quite a bit of potential and there's been a lot of misinformation surrounding them.

My favorite thing in this game. I was mainly a survivor main for a long time and played killer when I got burnt out of having bad teammates. Then I had a taste of scaring survivors with SM Myers and I got hooked. It’s the most fun thing to do in this game.

Don't think the basement is bad news? This basement Bubba would disagree. He stood near the top of the basement stairs with insidious and even with sprint burst equipped I couldn't get anyone out of there (AFC and basekit BT did nothing, btw).

He is very much still viable.

The only reason a killer would ever go down there is if they have a perk that lets them know ur there.

The basement is a danger zone only if you come into contact with the killer. All you have to do is avoid such situations and stop by, so in reality there are many times when it is not dangerous.

Even more serious is that going to the basement will waste time, which will delay the completion gen.

Now I’m laughing. It’s the little moments.

I was testing chemical trap and any means necessary yesterday and in one of the matches got a trapper, obviously as soon as I dropped the pallet he kicked it and then got covered in the flour like substance and we just stared at each other. I laughed for like 5 mins bc I can’t take this perk seriously with its visual effects. It’s so silly.

To answer your question when this new chapter drops very dangerous, once all the hype wears off and people go back to their normals perk picks that drops a little more, but basement is never safe and comes with increased risks, especially with most killer builds having 1 aura perk minimum.

They should buff the basement for killer now when survivors will have a lot of fun. How about killer gets 5% haste for 15 seconds leaving the bottom of the basement if there are nu survivors inside it. This will give killers a reward for going down there to check.

The boring part about basement is survivors can hide there because it's one place killers don't have time to search. So it's already a cozy little hideout for survivors and it should be something to fear.

Agreed. I main as SM Myers. Once you play with Scratched Mirror 🍳 (especially in Midwich or RPD) you never go back. 🔪

Isn't basement super strong for strong camping killers like Trapper and Huntress (to name a few). You will also loop on top of basement most of the time as it spawns in shack or in the main building, the strongest looping structures of the map usually.

What in the low MMR matchmaking is this. 🤣🤣 I haven’t seen these low level players in a long timeeeeeeeee.

I mean no harm when I say this but that tactic wouldn’t work on higher levels or even higher MMR. One whiff of his plan and we go to the furthest gens away and complete them like 1,2,3.

You're absolutely right that the basement isn't the most dangerous place in the game (unless you're facing a basement trapper, camper bubba, or mirror myers). However, due to the new perk, the killer may think "Let me go to the basement so that no one performs a ritual" and occasionally check the basement (to be honest, no one will decline the offer of 1 broken survivor in exchange for 15% gen progress, so they normally do not go to the basement even when they are going to go). I also agree with you about Strength in the shadows. I also liken this perk very similar to the old CoH perk, but we have much less space for you to use this perk (the radius of the boon totem is larger than the basement).

Just the screenshot you took is enough to make me imagine what kind of match you had. 😄

I find basement to be one of safest areas for survivor because a team that pressure gens hard makes killer not have time to check basement. It is little bit like lockers where time sink to check basement is too high. invocation perk have high probability to go off if killer is not bringing an info perk like BBQ. I suspect strength of the shadow will be a popular perk in Asia but it may become popular in NA/EU with Botany because 17 second heals is as fast old med-kits. Med-kit were very popular item in the past so a perk giving you a free original med-kit has potencial to be very common.

Not to mention you don't actually have to go into the basement, it triggers half way down the stairs.

Sure, OK. I guess I'll go do all 5 gens by myself, then? You never, ever get bad or inexperienced teammates in your games? Lucky you.

The game was lost by the point that I decided to venture down there. If I had been more interested in my own survival, I would have waited for everyone else to die so I could get hatch, but I wanted to see if it was possible to get someone out of the basement for the sake of my own curiosity. I honestly don't think MMR matters in this game. Only the time that you log on to play.

    Yeah, we tried...

I think Sable's perks are BHVR'S new attempt to buff Trapper's kill rates.

I think a better way to say it is the basement is the most easily defended part of the map.

The moment a survivor is hooked in the basement it can easily become the most dangerous place on the map if the killer wants to make it so.

Guys basement isn't that dangerous. Many people writing in this discussion write, "If the killer finds you in the basement, you will die." That's right, even if you don't die, you'll still get free hits. But the real reason why the basement is not dangerous is in how many matches does the killer find you in the basement or catch someone in the basement while you are playing the killer? If there is no one among us who says "I experience something like this every match", the basement is not that dangerous. Is there anyone among us who is raided by the killer in the basement every match or who catches a survivor in the basement every match? Probably not. But the truth is that if the killer finds a survivor in the basement (possibly less than a 2% chance), the killer hits that survivor at most 1 hit while he is in the basement, and the remaining chase continues upstairs with speed boost (unless the killer is Bubba (If so, you are dead)).

Well, there’s blood dripping from the ceiling so there’s slip and infection hazards. There’s probably splinters and rusty metal everywhere so pretty dangerous.

In all seriousness it’s a dead end so while it may waste the Killer’s time it’s still a death trap for a Survivor.

The answer to your question is simple and obvious. The basement is extremely dangerous for survivors. It is one of those lessons most players learn early on in the game. There are 4 hooks right next to each other and one entrance. There is literally no location on any map that is more dangerous than that. So perks that require survivors hanging out there are inherently bad. At the very least, the pay off needs to be huge to be worth the risk and Sable's perks simply are not big pay offs. Maybe, maybe there can be an argument for the healing perk since you can heal on the staircase to the basement. But even then, the travel time to and from the basement off set the slight advantage it offers over self care in terms of healing speed.

Don't underestimate killers. How many tracking perks are there? If I'm using BBQ and I see people hanging out in the basement then I'm going to make it a point to visit the basement. If I get multiple people hooked there then it is game over. If I have nurse's calling and see someone healing on the basement stairs then they are done for. There are so many ways that this will go sideways for survivors.

  • DBD78
    DBD78 Member Posts: 3,464

Not dangerous at all if the killer just hook there and then leave, then basement does nothing other hooks can't do. I don't even understand why some killers hook there and then don't take advantage of it what was the point? Other than if it was the closest hook.

If the killer is Bubba or Trapper you want to stay away from basement period. Chase away from it not towards basement. Huntress, Billy, Hag there are some other strong basement killers there also. But still they have to play around that hook also and not just forget to proxy camp.

  • Yharwick
    Yharwick Member Posts: 521

BBQ is easy to play around and tbh the heal will probably be done by the time the killer makes it over there, Nurses I could be wrong but I feel like nobody uses it anymore the only one that's actually trouble is Ultimate Weapon and sure that would be bad but keep in mind you don't actually have to go into basement to use the perk just halfway down the stairs.

I feel like the level of efficiency which can reach CoH 1.0 levels or even surpass it is worth the trade off of having to be on a specific staircase to use it. It's just kinda funny to me people are bashing SiS so much when meanwhile most survivors heal under the hook all the time AKA the last place the killer saw them.

  • KateMain86
    KateMain86 Member Posts: 2,374

I think the concern is the assumption that killer players will now actively check the basement area and survivors may not ever really get to use this perk. The basement may be the first place killers check every match. Its an interesting perk and certainly changes things up.

  • Dreamnomad
    Dreamnomad Member Posts: 3,949

You do you. If you want to play around with these perks then you don't need anyone's permission. But if your goal is to convince people a bad perk isn't bad then you'll have your work cut out for you. I'm sure there will be some battle pass related quests that require using these perks. Outside of those, I doubt I'll touch any of them except maybe the self healing one.

  • Nazzzak
    Nazzzak Member Posts: 5,656

I mean, no one runs down there purposely during a chase. And people take care not to leave scratch marks when they do go down there. They hide in lockers when BBQ or UW is likely to proc. No one wants to be caught down there for a reason. And I doubt anyone will bother with the Invocation perk so it won't be an issue anyway I imagine.

  • crogers271
    crogers271 Member Posts: 1,819

Realistically as killer unless you see someone with an aura perk or a gen is near the basement you pretty much never go in or even near the basement.

But this assumes the game as is where survivors don't have any reason to be in the basement other than a chest (bad idea) or to hide (risky idea). The reason the basement is a good hiding spot is because it is a dangerous hiding spot meaning the killer might not bother.

It's just another form of mind games.

But if there becomes a reason for survivors to be in the basement, now killers will more likely check the basement, greatly increasing the risk of getting hit and basement hooked.

If the games changes, survivors and killers will change. I don't think it will change, because the invocation as it exists in the PTB is pretty weak.

Unless your teammate is looping (and goes down) around the basement in the moment that you're self healing or the killer has an aura reading perk, it's not really much of a place to avoid. The basement Self Care is good. People be sleeping on it heavily.
