Is DBD REALLY a team game?

Like think about it. Each survivor wins and loses individually. Understandably there are situations where in order to make another survivor win you would have to lose, and thus you would probably just leave them to die (no it doesn't matter if you think piping or escaping is winning here. This applies regardless).

Thus there is likely at least 1 situation where in order to win you would have to actively make someone else lose even if they weren't in danger of losing in the first place (like using another survivor as a decoy to get the killer off your back)

Since you don't always have the other survivor's best interests in mind, that means you can't really on them to have your best interests in mind. Thus you would likely play selfishly to a certain extent and use perks like self care and deliverance to assist with that.

So I ask again. Can you really call that a team? It feels more like a shaky alliance.

The original concept of the game never intended it to be a defacto team game. It was supposed to be as you said at the end. A shaky alliance. You can either choose to work together or not. Its up to you. This is reinforced by the fact that the game does not have built in voice comms. I think overtime this game has become viewed as a team game in some respects but if you are all playing solo queue the original vision still very much holds true.

In terms of the gameplay yes. I'm more referring to how it get's viewed as a 4v1. When in reality it is 4 1v1's going on in tandem (from the PoV of the survivor's anyways).

This post isn't a critique on the game but more just how people talk and think about it about it

Mathieu Cote from November of 2018:

"It’s anti-social multiplayer where survivors have to collaborate and cooperate up to a certain point. The old saying is that you don’t need to be fast than the killer, you just need to be faster than your friends."

It's never been a team game. It's always been a forced collaboration. You form an alliance until you feel like you're in a good position to win the game. The rest is up to you.

Many games are like that. Take Settlers of Catan, for example. Most of the times, you refuse to trade resources with the player that is most ahead in points, and trade/collaborate with other players so that you are able to catch up. DBD is kind of like that, except one of the players is already ahead of the others from the very beginning of the game. Because of that, you are forced to collaborate with the other Survivors. The longer you can keep them alive, the better chance YOU have of winning.

It's also part of the reason why SWF should have never been forced into the core gameplay, but only provided as an extra mode or expansion. It deceives people into thinking it's a team based game when it obviously is not.

You also see a lot of kingmaking in DBD, where a Survivor realizes that they have no chance of winning, but will attempt to influence the game in that they are able to choose who wins, whether it is the Killer or one of the other survivors. That's also part of the gameplay.
