Competitive
As much as I like it being casual, the truth is that mmr, the whole rank system and the attitudes of a lot of players turn this into a competitive thing. Mistakes are never forgiven, if you mess up as survivor you loose quite badly. If you fail to apply some pressure as killer, you get genrushed. And if you are bad at the game or you underperform, prepare yourself for the "ez" in the endgame chat or harsh criticism

Sadly competive, wish more fun and casual mods like lights out and 2v8

I don't really see a reason to not trying to win, for what do I play a pvp-game if not to play against other people and try to be better than them. Of course I could use some builds that are fun for a few rounds, but in the end the fun comes from winning the matches for me.

I see the game more as a horror role-playing game. I am interested in what human qualities survivors and killers show in various controversial situations when moral choice is required. For me, there is no such thing as winning in this game.
I win if the game was fun, regardless of whether I escaped or not, killed someone or not.1 -

The game certainly has competitive elements and is a versus game with MMR, but I don't think it's nearly as sweaty or meant to be as sweaty as other PVP games are. This game does not have a set wincon, all it tells you is "Survivors should do five gens and escape, ad Killers should kill Survivors". It does not say how many need to escape/die to be a "win". It does not emphasize a ranked ladder or MMR gain. You are free to define your own wincon. The Community says 3-4 outs is Surv win and 3-4k is Killer win but does anyone really care about that too hard? I don't think the majority of people really do.
That, and a reminder that due to unfortunate circumstances not fit to discuss here, comp DBD is effectively dead. Overnight. There isn't even a competitive DBD scene anymore…
It is not a competitive game and the fact some people treat it like it is when there's no incentive to gain MMR at all like a competitive game kinda confuses me.

Well, to be fair, BHVR themself set win condition when they introduced SBMM

Option 3: Cringe.
It's supposed to be a casual game but people sweat their asses as if it was competitive. The game is not even close to be slightly balanced to be a competitive game.

I used to think it was competitive, but these days I just cant take competitive seriously. So many perks and addons that can make the game unwinnable for the other side if the other side isn't using anything good also.

The fact that half of respondents (granted, among people on this forum) think this is a competitive game is equal parts embarrassing and concerning but it does explain a lot of the sweaty and selfish behavior you'll see in the game.

There is no one win condition. SBMM exists to improve the quality of your matches but increasing your MMR is not a win condition unless you want it to be. Many other players play to pip, for bloodpoints, just for fun, etc.

I tend to try to win all of my games killing as many survivors as possible, i've encountered one too many "bully squads" to want to play nice with people I dont even know, though I will give the hatch if I feel like it. I tend to take it in a more casual manner if im playing a custom with friends
