As Killer, is there any reason not to use a lunge attack?

Title.

If I'm playing Freddy, Myers, Ghostface, or Trapper, why wouldn't I always hold R2 (on Playstation) for more distance as opposed to just tap the button for a shorter swing ?

Is there any downside to attempting a lunge attack versus a basic one?

I personally always use the lunge because the regular feels weird and I don't know what the downside is, if any.

Am I missing something?

Your attack will get auto-aimed sooner or later, and you'll lose the hit. And yet, the non-lunge basic attack has a pathetic hitbox, and requires you to be so close that you get fov tech'd for free, and if not then you still might get aim dressed.

Well, you shouldn't do it if you expect/know survivor is using Dead hard.

Or if you have perk where you can get better value like STBFL (grab obsession), or Coupe (don't waste stack if you don't need it).

I do a non-lunge attack when survivors are playing for the pallet stun. I tap the button at the very last second so the attack registers before the pallet stun. It's a mindgame of sorts. Punishes greedy players who try to vacuum into pallet drops. If they see you start the lunge animation, they'll just drop it early. So you hide the swing by tapping the button late as you walk through the pallet.

The other time I'll non-lunge is to try and bait a survivor into wasting a pallet. In this situation, I have an easy down but I wait and keep following them until they cross a pallet, then I quick swing to get the down+pallet. You really need to know the timing on this though. Don't wait too long to swing and lose a down.

What exactly is auto-aim? I hear TTVs complain about it when they miss a hit but it sounds like a feature, is it? Is it supposed to help you aim at the Survivor? If it's problematic, why is there no option to switch it off?

    Yes there is.

Basically, when you PRESS m1 instead of lunging, you immediately attack on the next frame. So if you are right under a pallet and the survivor is going to drop it, "pressing" m1, will often let you hit them.

The way lunges work, is you lunge for 0.9 seconds THEN you attack. So if you are lunging through a pallet, your attack won't actually come out for 0.9 seconds making a pallet stun easier.
