Is anime good or bad for the game?

So Dead by Daylight has dabbled a little in having crossovers with popular anime. This of course came in the form of Attack on Titan with several skins for killer and survivor, and the recent Junji Ito horror Manga collab.

With the additions mainly being skins, there is no bad collaboration so long as the skins remain tied to horror anime/manga, yet I can still see arguments made for shows like Bleach or Jujistu Kaisen with their creepy designs.

The main question revolves around if an anime collaboration should lead to a full chapter. The obvious answer is it depends on the anime but it can go a bit deeper than that. Anime is its own culture and style. While it has become much more mainstream and accepted, there is still a stigma given the cultural differences between east and west with the obvious worry of Behavior choosing an anime ill suited to the horror that is Dead by Daylight.

Trickster is a good example. While he was well accepted by Korean players, other players questioned how he fitted in the game with his bright aesthetic. A killer popstar doesn't scream horror, but to others it is an extreme rarity in their culture that captured their attention.

I'm hopeful to hear everyone's takes.

I guess it depends on who is the audience for an anime chapter. According to you, Trickster was welcome in South Korean which means the main audience for BHVR was the South Korean playerbase. A similar thing was with DBDMobile, they made this cooperation to get the Chinese playerbase. If they do an anime chapter, maybe the main audience will be Japan with the nice effect that many people in the western also love animes and would be hyped for the chapter or even join the game depending on the anime.

In my opinion, the AoT cosmetic was rather poor because the skins for Oni and Spirit were underwhelming (no special sounds or animations) while the survivors tried to cosplaying. The Junji Ito cosmetic, however, was amazing. The legendary skins for Artist and Spirit are amazing while every other cosmetic fits for the character and does not feel like a bad cosplay - only the Yun-Jin cosmetic has low quality and the Dredge Skin is a scam like 15bucks for nearly nothing special. Overall, the developers improved and they were able to implement anime to dbd without making it look like out of space. So in terms of quality and skill, they might be ready. Thus, it also depends on the anime because a Yugi Muto skin would always look wrong no matter what you do. On the other hand, animes like Demon Slayer, Tokyo Ghoul, Death Note or Jujutsu Kaisen could fit because their characters don't look too complicated or wrong in dbd.

Personal, I love animes and would be happy to see another anime collaboration - either another collection or as a chapter, both would be welcome.

There's tons of good horror anime that would fit not only as skins but full on chapters. I would love for there to be a chapter or at least a skin line on Higurashi (a legion skin and a survivor or 2 would work pretty well), but i do know that for the non-initiated it would just be like "why are they putting cute school girls in this horror game" But in terms of atmosphere, brutality, horror, and violence, i think it would fit right in.

Outside of something like that, you could probably do things like Demon Slayer with tons of demons and characters to choose from, Elfen Lied with a potential for a really cool killer with the arms, or Hellsing has tons of bad guys (although all the good ones are literal Nazi's so it might be a bit harder to adapt), or the Butler with his strings, or even just Alucard (which might be a little weird with the other Alucard being in the game), or maybe even Death Note somehow that might be interesting.

But definitely just look up some of the "death scenes" in Higurashi and tell me that wouldn't fit in with DBD just because the characters "look cute"

Or that Lucy from Elfen Lied going on a killing spree and ripping peoples arms off and then beating them to death with the arms doesn't fit.

Or any of the demons from Demon Slayer that mercilessly kill tons of people.

All of these thing would fit quite well in the game, especially in a world where trickster, and Junji Ito skins and such exist.

I think when people say "anime" they think of things like, Pokemon, or Naruto, or things like that, that, yes, would not fit very well into DBD. But i think there are tons of horror anime that exist that would fit quite well, for fans and non fans alike.

I think some people have too narrow a view of the horror genre. Wanting DbD to an 80s slasher horror themed game is fine, but horror is a much broader genre than that.

I don't follow anime as closely as I once did, but there are lots of horror and horror-adjacent animes.

I don’t like anime myself but if the content is fun to play or looks good sure why not. As long as it doesn’t look incredibly goofy and out of place I wouldn’t have any issues with it.

Exactly. Most people associate horror with slashers, monsters, ghost and demons. That is what a majority of the game is. Trickster is a pretty boy with some blood on him, but when you compare, he is no different than Ghostface. Both have stalked, killed and tortured others for some kind of sadistic pleasure. The only difference is their style. Trickster is made if bright popping colors while Ghostface is shrouded in black and gray yet both are starved for the spotlight.

I think it's fine. I'm not personally a fan of anime (though my daughter is obsessed with Spy Family and I do admit it's quite entertaining) but the game doesn't revolve around me. There are many horror subgenres and anime itself is in a number of them.

Hopefully we will get more anime in DBD.

How would "anime" be bad for the game?

Horror can be in all types of mediums, this includes animation, and anime is just animation from Japan (outside of distinct visual and culture styles/elements, there really isnt much that makes it different from standard animation anyways).

If anything, Id encourage BHVR to try and experiment and move away from standard Live-Action Horror and try other mediums, would love to see some Analog Horror or maybe experimenting with Cell-Shaded effects/filters for animation-based Killers.

I guess it comes down to which anime is collaborating with DBD

Yes the horror ones make more sense but it doesn't tell the while story

But The Trickster is more of a what of more then anything

Asking if anime is good or bad for the game is like asking if movies, books, or games are bad for the game. Anime isn't some monolithic entity. It's just animation. Action, slice of life, or romance anime wouldn't be a good fit, but horror anime is.

If it’s horror, I’m all for it. Otherwise, no.

I know western players usually hate anime and manga stuff but DbD is very popular in Asia countries too. And anime stuff is popular in those countries. So it's good.

And we got 2 anime collabs so far, they both added cool skins to game.

I absolutely despise Anime personally and it is my only blocked tag on Steam for recommended games… that being said, if people want it and it is actually horror themed then meh, who am I to argue against it if the masses like this stuff?

I don't want anime, not a huge fan of it like that one clothing pack (forgot its name) that eventually got pulled. But I'm not going to say its not welcome. DBD has something for everyone which is always nice. Just not my cup of tea.

I am an American and I do not watch anime. At the same time, I encourage the developers to make content that is more suitable for other regions and cultures. Not every chapter needs to be “made” for me. Before their chapters, I never played Alan Wake or Dungeons and Dragons in my life—but I still enjoyed them in DBD and I learned more about their worlds through the game.

On a base level, we know that play-styles differ between cultures—but I think Hens and Otzdarva have only scratched the surface on regional DBD differences. It makes 100% business sense for a company to try something new and market their game to a new demographic. Looking backwards, I wonder if the Eastern DBD community feels alienated if 4/4 main chapters every year are not really made for them. They don’t have an Otzdarva equivalent to make a map and compass for new players. They don’t have the benefit of speaking the same language as the developers. I think we owe it to them to let them be represented and get content that is meaningful to them.

I'm open minded; i don't judge based off labels.

99% of anime i don't think would be a good fit. But AoT was my dream chapter.

I thought BHVR going for Ringu was an interesting choice, so I watched it and saw the vision.I'm not a fan of Fnaf but I'm confident they are going to cook with that.

Bhvr generally incorporates things well I'm not too worried about them picking up random junk just to chase trends. I was skeptical about Trickster and his modern urban horror aesthetic but I think they did a fine job carving a niche out for him. I like the different flavours this game brings out

Not really my demographic, but there's totally a market for it. So long as they stick to horror and it fits right in the game, I'm down. Maybe Trickster will finally get a map he belongs on.

That is an interesting point that's usually forgotten. Western players aren't the only people playing as Dbd is widely enjoyed by a variety of regions.
