For me I think it's a toss up between John Carpenters The Thing, Evil Dead 2 or Cabin In The Woods

I think this still counts, as its classified as sci-fi horror, but Godzilla (1954).

I'd say it counts as that probably was scary back in the day. Legendary creature feature for sure
