Vanilla (our Hosting Company) will be carrying out maintenance on their servers between the 24th June - 4th July, this might result in some temporary instability on our forums. We apologise for the inconvenience.

So, it's been a while since we had a successful original chapter.

This is something I've been thinking about for the last 2 years in terms of original content and I think they haven't been very successful depending on how you look at it.

I don't think the last few original chapters really caught my attention and the community either. I don't think I remember the community saying anything like "this is how you make a good chapter."

It's a little funny to say this because BHRV has full control over the original chapters and they can do whatever they want but I feel like they've been making mistakes in the last few original chapters and I believe they haven't been profitable either.

I'm not saying that all the chapters were a disaster, but the community's discontent with the recent original chapters released is noticeable. Most of the newly released original killers are completely hated or forgettable by the community that no one even plays them. The survivors and the perks released haven't been very interesting either.

Unknown was well received, but everything else after dredge was a dumpster fire imo

I don't really think that's accurate, I think you have to be looking at things from a very specific lens in order for that to be the case.

All Things Wicked and End Transmission were broadly well received, even if a handful of things weren't right balance wise. There are generally a good number of people who like Doomed Course conceptually too, even if Houndmaster is buggy as hell.

The perks are also pretty good overall- killer less so, but even including licenses, of the past eight survivor releases only one hasn't had at least one genuinely good, worthwhile perk associated with them. Killer has slightly weaker offerings but still pretty okay.

Hell, even the maps haven't actually been that bad. Toba Landing had a rough start but is a pretty okay map now, Greenville Square is surprisingly decent, and while it wasn't strictly part of Doomed Course, the new Ormond map is pretty good too.

Some of the more recent licenses might've eclipsed the original stuff in popularity overall, but outside of two specific outliers, the original chapters over the past few years have been pretty decent.

All Things Wicked was probably one of the best chapters they've ever done, though. Great killer, great survivor, great map, great theming overall.

And then BHVR laid off the very person responsible for All Things Wicked. Shows you what you need to know about the company's appreciation for people who actually care about creativity and the game.

I mean, not the person responsible for All Things Wicked (chapters are created by a huge team of people overall), but a big part of the community team, who were behind the really cool social media campaign they did. (iirc)

It's still a massive shame. That was a pretty big part in creating the atmosphere around the chapter. Capitalism can really be the enemy of creativity, as profit margins will always take priority over talent in the eyes of executives.

Like, they completely scrapped Project T even though it had positive reception in the playtests. All that work, just gone on a dime. These kinds of events speaks to the major issues within the games industry as a whole, not just BHVR.

It baffles me how for all their obsession with profits, they consistently shoot their golden geese (both BHVR and the fames industry in general).

I mean, you may not care about creativity, but if you care about long-term revenues and consistent success, you keep people generating good ideas that are well-received by the target audience close, not show them the door the moment you can save a bit of money on salaries.
