About MMR
What is MMR based on? Is it playtime? Character experience? Or rank? From what I’ve seen, it doesn’t seem to be any of the three. If it’s playtime: I’ve played for around 600 hours, so why am I matched against people with 2800 hours? If it’s character experience: I just bought Ghoul, so there’s no way I have experience with it.If it’s rank: I just returned to the game, and I’m at the lowest rank.Is MMR broken because of 2v8? Or has the MMR system become broken? (I’ve been inactive for about 6–7 months)

Pretty sure it's the amount of escapes you and your teammates get for survivor, and the amount of kills for killers.

Kills and escapes

As far as I know you have a score:
This score changes if you escape or die, let a survivor escape or kill him.
You as survivor play a game alone against the killer, it only counts if you escape or die and it doesn't care about your teammates at all.
You as killer play 4 different games at once, one against each survivor, yet again it only counts if you kill the survivor or let him escape and it doesn't care about the other ones in this specific game of the survivor.
The amount how much your score changes scales with the duration of the game (I believe between 8 and 15 minutes i've red you get the most, under or above that you lose less or earn less points depending on if you lose or win the game against the opponent) and the mmr of your opponent (if you have basically the same you earn or lose normal amount, if the opponent is above you you lose less and earn more, and if your opponent is below you you earn less and lose normal amount I guess?).
The hatch doesn't give you any score but also doesn't lose you any score.
Also there's a softcap that's pretty low set so everyone reaches it pretty fast, if you reach that you get matched against a high variety of people mostly higher players then you if you first reach it. I believe I've red you need around 3 to 4 loses to cancel out 1 win, so you WILL reach the softcap pretty fast even if it's not you plan.
Those are informations I've red from different people or saw in videos, they are probably not all true and a little bit clunky so yeah, don't take them to serious I guess. It may be a good picture of the system in general, but only bhvr knows it exactly I'd say.

kills = skill
Yes, it’s an insanely stupid system

Kills and escapes with the exception of hatch escapes which are MMR neutral.

MMR is based on:
Individual match outcome (gate escape/hatch escape/death) as survivor.
Amount of kills as killer (<2k, 2k, 2k+)
These are multiplied by various factors in game, such as difference in MMR between players, SWF vs. solo, how many teammates escaped as surv etc.
But taking all this in mind, it's still atrocious due to how low soft MMR cap (the point at which game just randomly matches everybody at and above soft MMR cap) is. This is why winstreaks on both sides exist, because people who have reached such an MMR score that is extremely above soft MMR cap are being matched with people at soft MMR cap (very big skill difference).

I think playtime should also be taken into account, someone who has played for 500 hours shouldn't be matched with someone who has played 1000 hours or more.

as stated already, only kills and escapes change your MMR though hatch escapes don’t count at all.
Survivors share the same MMr as they are only skins with Minor variations in sounds and visibility of the skin which is being neglected.
Killers have their individual scoring though you don’t start at Zero with a new killer but I think an average Score out of the Killer Scores where you have experience.
BHVR have also announced that their MMR System will be overhauled in the Game Health Updates This year! So it’s Not supposed to stay only kill/escape based but we don’t have more details yet0 -
Devs explain it as a bunch of 1v1s. How many you kill doesn't mean your MMR goes up. You could kill 3 and still lose MMR.

It is. And that is not even a hot take. Pretty much universally disliked system in the DbD community

I just played another match, and even though I have 600 hours in the game, I was matched against four survivors with playtimes ranging from 1500 to 3000 hours.I think this is a general issue caused by the 2v8 mode, such matchups never used to happen before.
