Dead by Daylight ALPHA wow what a creepy Atmosphere
wow, what a creepy atmosphere it was back then, because of the lighting conditions and the dark, beautiful fog. As a survivor, I would have wet my pants even more back then than I do today. What particularly irritates me is the animation of the window tomb. I think it's great, but why didn't it make it into the finished game in the end?

Im gonna assume you meant the window interrupt?
Im pretty sure it did but it got removed. Probably because it took about 3-5 business days before the animation ended

Yes, the atmosphere looks way better, I agree.
It is very, VERY unfortunate that a way to return to these visuals, whatever it may be, was never added. We know from the very brief age of modding that the game supports people playing on the same map with different lighting, so why we don't have an option to select the old atmosphere is beyond me.

This DID make it into the finished game. It's what DBD looked like for the first 3 or 4 years. They altered it because nobody was playing for the horror or the stealth so the darkness just got in the way. The game was reoriented towards looping, which was not the originally intended playstyle.

It would be nice if they had an event of some sort based around returning aspects of Old DBD's atmosphere. Maybe even making a copy of current maps with the old textures to play on and maybe use during custom matches?
Or just add a lighting option that makes the game look more like old lighting.

there was a brief period of time that the Garden of Joy house was pitch black for old consoles but bright for pc/new gens. I had the old console but I didn't care i loved the Darkness

i started playing about a month after the game released in 2016. sometimes i miss the dark blue tone of the maps. odd they haven't brought it back for an event or something

Yeah, I also really enjoy the darkness.
Honestly one of the reasons why one of my favorite combinations to play against in DBD is against Dredge in Coldwind Farm, because it fixes the realm.
I really want BHVR to find a way to bring the old atmosphere back.

I hope it doesn‘t take too long. Old maps were peak

With the new gamma settings, you can just select the lowest option if you want to play the game in dark mode.

They want to be Fortnite.

This doesn’t fix the visual request they want. It’s a little different if someone wants to play stealthy and has their gamma zeroed out. Yeah, they’re hidden on their screen, not the killer’s. Old visuals had a more eerie atmosphere for everybody and allowed for stealthy play styles.
While I personally hate stealthy play styles, it’s very disingenuous to tell someone to just crank down their gamma and intentionally hinder their own sight, nobody else’s, and try to play the game the way it was initially designed around. Behavior is slowly strangling out any play styles that aren’t gen rush and leave. If you don’t, you get crows and a D/C penalty.

Old dbd was very aesthetics based instead of game play based. Look how they designed tiles back then. Most of the changes to aesthetics occured with the engine upgrade in 1.4 which broke not only audio but fog. Fog became these black clusters randomly floating around. Then the realm beyond just brighten up everything, namely the farm maps. Used to joke the game was dead because there's daylight now.

Right. I wanna have the old lighting and tiles in MacMillan and Autohaven

Same, friend. I really miss them.

The game looked so much better back then. Good graphics doesn't mean highest possible resolutions and everything is bright and colourful. The game lost a good chunk of its identity with the map reworks. The old graphic has much more character and gives you that horror feeling, while the new graphic just looks like any other contemporary game. The old fog is also much better, it is completely useless now.

I mean, there was stealth, but one of the problems with it was that people picked Claudette with the darkest clothing possible to get an advantage, and the devs once said they would fix that, since some survivor picks shouldn't get base-kit advantages over the others, I guess part of the change in map lighting was because of this.
