Why do so many people find killer so stressful to play?
pretty much as the question says. Why are so many people stressed or “nervous” or even “scared” of playing killer?
I've been playing dbd a lot lately. I’ve returned after a year and I’ve been having a blast with all the new killers since Vecna, particularly Kaneki and Springtrap.
Likewise been having a good time playing Survivor with the new perks and cosmetics like Geralt etc with friends.
one thing I’ve noticed though, with my friend group and people I’ve talked to on DBD, or watching people play killer on YouTube, twitch etc and talking to people through the chats etc or seeing conversations, a lot of people don’t want to play killer.
I used to be an almost killer main before the hiatus and I think I had really high mmr at the time since my god the games were sweaty. I actually don’t know if MMR decays because even though it’s been a year, and my rust has been RUSTING, I’m getting really sweaty games that feel like games before I left.
Now that has been stressful I’m not going to lie. Trying to get back to where i used to be, especially playing so many new killers with new perks etc has been a total trial by fire with the games I’ve been getting.
I’ve been asking my friends to play killer and they’re so QUICK to say things like “absolutely not”. That from seeing my games as killer which yeah, as I’ve said they haven’t been pretty sometimes that playing killer freaks them out.
They enjoy watching killer play, like me in the discord while they’re eating etc but playing killer is a big no no. That’s a viewpoint I’ve been seeing from a lot of people.
killer can be really fun! Honestly it’s more fun than survivor I think since every character is different etc. Not that I don’t love playing survivor as well, especially lately I’ve found a real balance of playtime.
I feel like a lot of people just have this fear of playing killer and I find it very interesting hearing why they feel that way.

I don't find it stressful. If anything, it's one of the few times I'm able to have fun because of how crap the Survivor experience is. Granted, I don't tryhard when I play Killer, cause winning in this game is frankly pointless, and it's more fun to just go with the flow of the match, but still.
I think the only reason people get nervous or scared is because they're too focused on getting a 4K - it's why that toxic crap, the tunneling, camping and slugging, exist - because people think killing the entire lobby is the only important thing, so they forget to have fun. There's no fun in tryharding - never has been, never will be.
Just play who you want, stop ruining the match for everyone, and just have fun. Go with the flow of the match - if the Survivors are chill, be chill. If the Survivors are a-holes, be an a-hole back. Don't worry about getting the 4K - you're going to get a lot of points regardless. If a 4K happens, it happens. It's not the be all, end all of the game. What should be important is having fun.

I mean when you play as survivor you are only 1/4th of the team, you can goof around or make mistakes and you only account for 25% of the team. Meanwhile when you play killer 100% of the success is on you. Make one mistake and that can be extremely costly. As kosaba above mentioned more people who play killer stress for the 4k and when combined with you being 100% of the team… well you can see why it is more stressful to most people when compared to playing survivor.

Because you're in a 1v4. It's by default more stressful, because you have way more things you need to manage.

Could just be a lack of enjoyment in the role? Maybe they tried one killer, didn't enjoy it, and assume it will be the same for all killers? Or they hold too high expectations on themselves - the prospect of having to set the tone of the match for 4 other people can be daunting for some.
I also experience zero stress when I play killer, which is actually really funny to me as i have GAD lol. Sometimes I might make a stupid mistake and briefly get frustrated at myself, but going into the match I'm pretty chill. Everyone in my match will forget about me once they've loaded into their next one, and the outcome of the match has zero impact on my actual life. So, no need to stress.

i'm generally stressed because i miss shots i know i could easily make on goddamn meet your maker but bhvr said no to getting the resources together to fix their controller problem

No clue, killer is so handheld and babied at this point in the game if you are scared of playing it you probably shouldn't be playing the game in the first place.

How is killer “handheld and babied”? The average kill rate is 60%. Even less against 4-man SWF. What kill rate would qualify as not “handheld” or “babied”?

The average killrate is over 60%, SWFs are a minority in the game and barely happen, killer is so disgustingly easy that people can go on thousand game winstreaks on it. This isn't hard to understand.

Show me any stats from BHVR that show the kill rate over 60%. Also, why don’t you show us your killer stats or better yet some of your gameplay to show us how “disgustingly easy” it is. I won’t hold my breath because I have a feeling you can’t back it up.

I have shown my stats in another thread and will not do it again, I have proven I have nearly an 80% kill rate on every killer I play or at the bare minimum on the killers I was farming the event with, 8 hook nearly every single match, and I don't play with sound. Spotify or a youtube video is always playing.

Do you really think this constant trolling is going to convince the devs to do anything differently? I really don’t know what your goal is here. The devs know their game stats, and they show the game is balanced exactly as they want it to be. They’re also seeing record numbers of players. What data is telling them that the game is unwinnable for survivors like you claim?
It’s kind of hard for anyone to believe that you’re a godlike killer player with 80%+ kill rate, but at the same time you are so bad at survivor that you never escape.Post edited by I_Cant_Loop on12 -
It's a solo role, that's why. Personally, I don't really get anxious at all, I'm too experienced now. But I used to.

because depending on the killer u are either playing 8D chess while the survivors are singing im at pay phone, or a nightmare from the fog, not to mention bhvr adding more chores for the killer (boons) still no clue what they were cooking with that one, killer is not "the power role" its time management role
not to mention certain killer powers being frustrating to use

I saw what you originally had, and if you think survivors are the ones being "handheld," then you've clearly never played Survivor. Survivors don't get their hand held, if anything they have a boot to their neck with how much the Killer role gets coddled.
New toys to play with every time a new killer comes out, toxic strategies that are endorsed, the ability to change up your kit to directly respond to the Survivors before the match even starts, maps that only ever favor the Killers, several abilities that can straight up negate things Survivors can even do, etc. Survivors rarely, if ever, get updates that aid them, yet each patch the Killers get something useful.

eryie, badham, mother's dwelling, toba, yamaoka estate, the game, and i can go onunless u are talking about S/A tier killers here, there ain't no way u are saying those maps "help" lower tier killers
and toxic strats go both ways, let's not decide to ignore the locker meta, , the boon meta, or the damnmed horse perk meta, you know the rpd library one…
and most toxic strats are killer dependent as well, u can't pull them off on every killer
survivors always had more broken things than killers since the dawn of this game…
i think u been playing against a lot of high tier killers u kinda forgot there are players that play with lower tier killers

Because too many people think the 4k is all that matters. I used to stress out a bit playing Jason in my F13 days. I felt like if I didn't wipe the entire lobby I failed. Once I got past that I found it pretty relaxing and enjoyed going for cool plays. At this point with DbD I just aim for a good match. Not getting my teeth kicked in nor completely steam rolling the survivors.

I feel like a lot of people just have this fear of playing killer and I find it very interesting hearing why they feel that way.This is one of my favorite topics and it comes up every month or two.
It boils down to: people are different.
Personally, I've never found Killer very fulfilling (win or lose). That's very different from being stressed in the role as I've never thought the things you have to manage in the game are that difficult or anywhere on the level of having to guess at what the other survivors are doing.

That's nice in theory. In reality, every time a survivor escapes they go out of their way to be as obnoxious as possible about it.

I play both equally, but i find survivor more casual and simple to join even when 95% of the killer players tunnel you out / grief you on hooks / camp you to death most of the games etc. Because on killer you have to play against 4 of those types of people in one round.
Not saying im afraid of playing killer, its just ur either against people you feel sorry for, or people that make you want to turn the game off, no in between.
So my friend that really likes trickster, maybe plays him one day in a month (from me pushing them to do it for the limmited time challenges etc)

This is exactly why I personally find killer less stressful.
On survivor I have 3 other people counting on me.
On killer I have 0 other people counting on me.
I can goof around and make mistakes and nobody suffers for it except me.

finding killer less stressful than survivor is a very unique viewpoint. It’s not one I’ve heard often at all.
I do find survivor more relaxing than killer. Unless the killer is absolutely trashing the team, when I’m playing I’ve always found survivor to be the more chill role since there times I’m just chilling on a gen chatting away while someone is looping the killer for a good while.
There are times I find survivor frustrating, but never stressful. How I feel I could have looped better or played a pallet better or bait better to make the chase longer for the benefit of the team before I go down.

It really depends on how much stock you put into either role. Guaranteed you'll find one far less stressful than the other unless you're split right down the middle. With DBD, frustration is given freely without prejudice.
For me, Survivor can be incredibly stressful because it's the role I enjoy playing the most. It gets even more frustrating when I play other games that give me more autonomy and don't waste my time because I realize how archaic and static DBD's loop is. Meanwhile, I find Killer boring to play and therefore put almost no effort into it. Nothing the Survivors do bothers me and I just run around and do whatever I want. Usually challenges.

I feel constantly pressured as killer as you really have no down time, as survivor I can piss around, zone out on a gen and have some fun chases (depending on the killer) and the pressure isn't on me constantly.
Even if I win against the sweatiest most toxic survivors, it just doesn't leave me feeling good for some reason. The second I go ready as killer I get anxiety even though like most people who play killer, I win most of my matches.
It's why I rarely play killer and I didn't buy the last 2 at all since I know I will probably never play them.

I've only just got back into the game. I left when playing killer was so much harder and it was so much fun then. I really enjoyed it, but now I load into killer and it's just kill everyone at 5 gens. That's not fun. So I nerfed myself and started running just bbq and brutal strength. And there's no reason in the world that I should win with only those two perks and zero add-ons and yet I'm still killing more than 2 survivors on average. And I came onto this forum expecting users to demand proper balance in the game and what do I see instead, killers saying that they need even more of an advantage! It's honestly so gross.

For me, it's the opposite.
Survivor is much more stressful for me.
Because as killer, you can only let yourslef down if you fail. Survivor? You have 3 other people potentially blaming you for losing the match.

Yeh, no… As a 2016 player, having lived through all of the miserable times on both sides… Overall and to this day I can still say survivor is A LOT more relaxing to play than killer ever was. The only time I would not stress at all on killer is when I play nurse, cause that killer is just pure ez mode. I actually avoid playing her, she shouldn't be in the game in her current state. That plus Nurse is the reason every half decent killer perk gets nerfed.

Same here. I would not say that I think that Survivor (or any side) is stressful, but Killer is not stressful for me because I am alone.
I can totally stomach my own mistakes and lose, this goes for both sides. But what you have on Survivor what you dont have on Killer is simply that you messing up can mean that up to three other Survivors might die because of that. Whether I made a big mistake like doing a stupid safe or accidentally bodyblock someone or if I am just not looping good enough.
And it also goes the other way around - as Survivor I have to rely on 2 random Teammates (since I only play in a 2 man SWF). And if those two are inefficient, it is more annoying to lose because of that than to lose as Killer. Classic example is if one of those people is someone who likes to run after the Killer with a Flashlight. At this point there are 33% less people doing a Gen when the Killer is in a chase and the Killer is chasing two people at once.
As Killer I dont have to rely on others and I also dont have any responsibility for others.

Its gotten really bad. Killer being as blanketly strong as it is against the vast majority of survivors has made them babied, whenever any sort of pushback from solo queue players is seen they flip out and demand nerfs to swfs, when 99% of the time they are not playing against a stack, or even that sweaty players. There is so much demand over killers being able to always get the 4k that there isn't even a thought for them about how survivors (the majority of players) even feel in the games.

Simple answer really, people like winning, they prefer winning with minimal effort, and negativity bias makes the matches where they have to actually try seem worse then they really were
When most Killers encounter a group of Survivors that requires them to “lock in” and actually try, they will claim Killer is stressful
Taking the match I posted complaining about haste-stacking as an example, I got a 4K at 3 gens and literally the only problem I encountered was the 2 people who had Power of Two and Blood Pact, I still won, but the experience required actually trying when most of my matches don’t, this led to the match feeling a lot worse then it actually was, because yeah dealing with two Survivors running at 112% wasn’t fun, but at the end of the day I still won.
So when people say Killer is stressful, I don’t really believe it, it’s usually more a case of one match out of twenty being mildly stressful and the end result was still a 4K anyway

I think it depends on how you see the game.
I don't really care about winning in DBD, but I don't want to let down teammates who might care. So, for me Survivor is more stressful because I need to worry about playing clean so as not to let my team down, but when I play killer I don't really care if I win or lose so it doesn't really matter to me and I don't particularly feel any stress about it.
If you are invested in your killer results, or if you don't assume your teammates want to win and play accordingly, your reaction might be different

I feel like it is because the game is a 1v4. Not only you have more pressure on yourself, since you are the only one on your side, but also when the survivor side behaves toxic it feels worse overall because it is a gang being mean to you. Don't get me wrong, the killer being toxic to you as a survivor feels bad, but it isn't as horrible since you got buddies at your side. We are a species that is made to live in groups, so being outnumbered and being ganged up on does trigger some natural instincts.
2v8 kinda solves this issue since you have a friend to pep you up (insert power of friendship speech in here).

because when survivors are not pressuring themselves, you are under a very tight timer where you need to manage 4 people and constantly make correct decisions and plays without missing a beat because losing momentum as killer vs survivors playing to win (doesnt matter if they're "Good" or whatever, just that theyre roughly your skill level and constantly get on gens) is an immediate lost game with little chance for recovering it.

Survivors only have to worry about a few things, and its mostly just either knowing when to do gens or how to effectively loop. Killer has to constantly try to keep track and best guess what 4 other players are doing at all times while needing to balance chase time with gen tracking 7 gens, and trying to figure out and work around going up against 16 different perks. Killer just has a LOT to keep track of, and unless they manage an early kill, all while the game is stacked against them. The game is balanced around a 60% kill rate - that's a bit over a 2k (50% kill rate) on average and not even halfway between a 2k (50%) and a 3k (75%).

I think it really depends on how you play killer. If you run meta perks hard tunnel, and camp playing efficiently as possible then yes that one match where all survivors are equally efficient and understand the assignment is going to seem like a slog. I get more mad at bugs than the actual role. I primarily play perkless huntress and hitting blatant hatchets back to back and them getting dedicated during egc drives me mad but as far as the role I love killer . I think people's view of both sides gets skewed when the matches contain equally skilled players where they're normal methods of winning falter. I love the super competitive matches I may talk trash but it's all in good spirit.

Technically, its because killer is easily the more stressful role to play, though I assume thats not what you are really asking. The survivor objective is faster to complete than the killer one is when teams are being efficient on gens. This means the killer can afford to make far fewer mistakes than the survivors can. Killers dont have anywhere near the ability to have perks erase punishments from mistakes that survivors get and survivor gets far more of these kinds of perks. This creates a situation where killer players have less breathing room and have to play much sweatier. There are other reasons for the stress too, i just dont think this part of it gets enough attention.

To piggyback off of this, I think the game overall feels bad to play. We all want our optimal matches and when they don't go that way, they feel a lot worse than they would if the game didn't feel so bleh. For instance, I'm sure a lot of Survivors escape more than they think. It's how they escaped (Killer giving it to them, event mechanics carrying them, etc. vs. earning it for themselves—low vs. high autonomy) as well as how bad the average trial feels. The reward feels pointless. Likewise I'm sure many Killers are genuine when they claim the game is awful for Killer right now, but it's because they're not getting the trials they want as easily even if they're winning most if not all of them like you said.

I've actually tested this. In over 90% of games that I lose, I get BM'd by at least one survivor.

So the game I just played is a good example.
It was against a Ghoul (a killer I am not fond of playing against). I am death hook with 2 gens left. The Ghoul sees me with Barbecue.
I am now going to die, which in itself is really frustrating since I know that there's nothing I can do to stop that against a killer like Ghoul. But not only am I guaranteed to lose the match, I need to run this last chase really well or else the other three survivors will also lose.
It's a bad, frustrating, stressful feeling that I just don't get on killer.
On killer it's more like "Oh they escaped, but at least I got 8 hooks." or "Well two escaped, but I killed two others. Not bad."
There's so many degrees of success and failure as a killer compared to survivor. As survivor the best you can hope for when you die is that you bought enough time for your allies to win, even though you lost.4 -
honestly. It’s the psychology of the different roles and the emphasis the individual player puts on winning.
Survivor: based on altruism and team mentality for the most part. You got social loafing and diffusion of responsibility, meaning responsibility is hated between 4 people. Survivor is about cohesion which creates bonding so people tend to joke more and goof off. Other people tend to buffer emotions. There is also partial success meaning they don’t need to escape to win or feel empowered (most survivors don’t care about escape just about having fun).
Tltr: survivors can take less responsibility and are more prone to taking the game less seriously. It is social and playful
killer: unlike survivor they barely the full responsibility for their failure, something ego does not like. The isolators “power-role” of killer also appeals to people who like feeling in control. This can lead to control-based aggression and hyper-focus. Think “I am the killer why are these survivors bullying ME!!!”. Also due to the power fantasy of being a killer when that happens it triggers even more frustration. They’re supposed to be in control but aren’t and the ego does not like that. Also people who tend to score higher in sadism, and machiavellianism in general.Killers would find less stress if they treated it as less of a “they’re my enemy and must be destroyed” and more of a “they’re my fellow players, let’s all have fun.” I got 4k (about) and have been a pretty dedicated killer main. The game became 1000 times more fun when i approached it less about winning and more about enjoyment. I like meme and jumpscare builds, they’re funny for everyone.
Tltr: isolation, performance pressure, ego based gameplay

you don’t have to let them win to have fun though. And you can win but play in a manner that is fun for you and the others. We learned this skill in like….toddler years. Ya know…sportsmanship…”winning isn’t everything”….casual gameplay for the sake of playing not for dominating.
If you’re ego is so fragile that a primary source of validation is your performance in a video game…that’s an issue.

Oh, wow. You took the completely wrong lesson from those toddler years and little league games.
Sportsmanship isn't "playing in a manner that makes sure that everyone has a good time." Sportsmanship is "an understanding of and commitment to fair play, ethical behavior and integrity, and general goodwill toward an opponent." It means not cheating, not breaking the rules, and not being a jerk about the end result. I can have goodwill towards an opponent while actively trying to crush them in-game. Sportsmanship is about fair play, respect and grace in both victory and defeat. The competition, in and of itself, is supposed to be the "good time." If you can't have fun while competing, maybe competitive multiplayer games aren't for you.
The point of sayings like, "Winning isn't everything," is to teach kids that it's better to play fair and lose than to cheat and win.
What's ironic is that I see far more survivors utilizing poor sportsmanship than killers. It's quite common for survivors to gloat when they win and spout the most vitriolic stuff in the end game chat when they lose. Especially if they lose because the killer didn't follow some imaginary rule that they made up in their head.
