Oni's Flicks Are Worse in PTB 9.1.0 — Here's Why
In this post, I want to talk about why Oni’s new flicks on the PTB 9.1.0 are worse than in the current live version of the game. A small introduction…
I started playing DBD in September 2016, and to this day I’ve played over 12,000 hours. Five years ago, one of the best chapters in DBD’s history was released - "Cursed Legacy", and my favorite character - Oni.
From the moment of his release and up to today, I’ve played over 6,000 hours on him, and I’ve fully mastered this killer’s power. I’m saying this because I understand what this character is capable of and what he’s supposed to be. Now, to the point...
For five years, Oni was able to instantly turn 180 degrees by directing his long strike backwards.
To do this, you had to use dpi, which technically was a bug - but that doesn't change the essence.
Over time, many survivors got used to Oni having this capability.
In patch 8.6.0, the developers removed the ability to use dpi and added 180 flicks to his base power.
However, those flicks were extremely slow and much weaker than what the community had used for five years - which is why many players didn’t like the change.
Especially those who spent a lot of time mastering him.
In patch 8.7.0, BHVR partially brought back the old one-frame flicks, like before.
But the issue was that these flicks became extremely uncomfortable to use due to the overly high sensitivity.
You could slightly move your mouse - and the character would instantly spin 180 degrees.
As a result, most players found Oni very hard to control.
All the developers needed to do was slightly lower the turning sensitivity, so the flicks would feel smoother and more manageable. But then PTB 9.1.0 came out...
BHVR finally implemented proper flick sensitivity for Oni - but at the same time made them significantly worse.
Now I’ll try to explain why...
As I said earlier, since patch 8.7.0, Oni can instantly turn 180 degrees by quickly moving the mouse and directing his massive strike backwards.
Since this flick happens instantly, the player can turn even when close to a wall or in tight spaces.
So, what’s different about the flicks on PTB 9.1.0?
Instead of turning instantly in one frame, Oni now rotates in an arc around himself.
He winds up and swings behind him, doing a smooth turn.
The biggest difference is that this turn now requires open space.
That means if you’re close to a wall or any object, you won’t be able to flick 180 — and your hit will just go into the wall.
This greatly interferes with many situations where you previously could land a hit.
And because of that, this change is 100% a serious nerf.
On top of that, if you’ve spent thousands of hours playing Oni - this change completely devalues the time you’ve invested.
Everything you learned with this killer no longer matters (at least when we’re talking about flicks and the possibilities they give).
What can be done to keep Oni’s flicks just as effective and comfortable?
The developers should keep the ability to instantly flick 180 in one frame if the player quickly moves their mouse - just like it’s worked since patch 8.7.0.
However, if the player moves the mouse smoothly, Oni should turn smoothly too. Simply put, the flick sensitivity should be slightly reduced so the flicks feel more controlled and natural.
If done this way, Oni will retain all his potential, and flicks will feel much more comfortable in all situations.
If the player wants to turn 90 degrees, it will look smooth.
If they want to snap 180 degrees quickly — they’ll still be able to.
BHVR, just give this character a bit more attention, and he’ll be in a perfect state.
Players like me, who’ve spent thousands of hours on Oni, will be truly thankful that you didn’t limit his capabilities and potential.
If you agree with what I said - feel free to share your thoughts.
Maybe this post will get noticed…
I’d like to add one more thing...
Throughout the entire lifespan of DbD, the game has had plenty of issues. And right now, it’s far from being in its best shape. On top of that, DbD has never truly aimed to be a competitive title where every character and every mechanic works flawlessly (except for that one time :DDDDDD). So why am I bringing this up?
As of now, there are very few killers left in DbD whose abilities have real depth and contain a lot of hidden mechanics. Simply put, these are killers that take a lot of time and effort to truly master. But if a player fully masters someone like Wesker or Oni, they’ll have the opportunity to showcase their skill and everything they’ve learned. I personally find it incredibly rewarding to invest time in such characters and work toward real improvement.
In almost any competitive game - like The Finals, DbD, Apex, and others - if you play one character long enough, you’ll eventually get good with them. And naturally, there will be moments where you outplay your opponent just because you’ve mastered your character and know exactly how they work. That’s completely normal.
In our case, it’s exactly the same. The only difference is that for 5 years since Oni was added to DbD, 180 flicks only worked due to high DPI settings - which was essentially a bug. The problem was that console players couldn’t take advantage of this. But since patch 8.6.0, that bug is gone, and now players across all platforms are on equal footing. And I’m definitely glad about that.
I wrote my post because I want Oni to keep the potential for skill expression - so that players who’ve been playing him for years can still use what they’ve learned.
For example, going for stylish plays or doing one-frame 180 turns. Things like that make Oni a very fun and interesting killer - and honestly, there are barely any killers like him left in the game.
I really hope that when this update goes live on July 29, the developers will make a final decision and keep the flicks as they are in the current version (9.0.0). All they really need to do is slightly reduce the sensitivity, so we don’t end up in situations where a player moves their mouse a few centimeters and Oni does a full 180.
Thanks for reading…

The reason for most of these Oni changes has been because his flicks could not be done with a controller, so they've tried to make it possible. Of course this would change how he plays with a mouse there's no avoiding that.
So they continue to tinker with it, I'm guessing with the goal of somewhat appeasing Oni players using either input device.

We love making exploits basekit and fine tuning them to remove what little counterplay is available.

The thing is, right now in the current live version of the game (9.0), flicks are in an almost perfect state. Personally, I’ve gotten used to the sensitivity - if I need to turn smoothly, I can. If I want to do an instant 180, the game lets me do that.
But on the PTB, I can only turn slowly, in an arc, swinging behind me. In other words (as I already mentioned), the character is simply being limited in what he can do. That’s why I think it’s a huge downside and pretty much devalues all the time players have spent learning him - assuming nothing changes before the update goes live.
All BHVR really needs to do is slightly reduce the sharpness of the flicks to make them feel more comfortable for most players. But the one-frame flick should stay.
"So they continue to tinker with it, I'm guessing with the goal of somewhat appeasing Oni players using either input device."
I really hope that’s the case :DDDDAs for consoles — now all players are on equal ground, and that’s a good thing. The fact that 180s only used to work on PC was definitely unfair.

I completely agree.

As an ONI player, I want to say that I completely agree — these are very valid thoughts, and I hope the developers will listen.

I agree with every word
Especially I don't want the hundreds of hours spent on mastering this killer to go to waste2 -
Once again, players are complaining that developers are fixing bugs. I'd like to see how you'd do flips on a gamepad. Oh, you can't do it? Well, yeah, because it's not fair. This game isn't about killers having some kind of “little tricks.” This game was created so that ordinary players like me, who come home tired from work, can relax with their console and have fun. I don't want my mood to be ruined by some sweaty Oni player who never leaves his house and never touches the grass😐️

I think the survivor experience needs to be taken into account when it comes to his flicks too, some of the hits you get from an oni look really bad on that end.
I think it's great he has been made more accessible for controller, but the hits K+M can get before the ptb was wild.
That said if it's really that bad to do on K+M now it should be looked at (I havn't seen the full extent of what can be done on PTB's changes)6 -
I completely agree with this comment, I've been playing Oni for a long time and hitting every texture is already very boring

II completely disagree with this comment I have been playing dbd since summer 2024 and have 1100 hours in the game already, in my experience they are a strong maniac and easily make -3 in the game, and you want to return clicks to him so stupid!!!

just another indifferent killer who wants his killer to be the strongest in the game and whines to the developers that they would just improve his killer's flicks

I'm veryI really hope that the creator of this post will be ignored and the right to play DBD will be taken away

I totally agree. I want my favorite Oni killer to be playable again.

I totally agree.

Meydix, I totally agree with you.

The whole aim of these changes was just to give controller players the chance to do it too. Though tbh no one should be able to flick 180⁰. That just defeats the only counterplay to demon dash, that being to hide behind something like a wall.

Agree with you "Huge oni main".

I totally agree.

Let the developers see this post and take measures to fix Oni. And if you guys think that our words is meaningless..... They were not! Our words serves as an guide to them all! The courageous fallen! The anguished fallen! Our words have meaning because we the living refuse to come to terms with it ! And as we ride to certain death, we trust our successors to do the same for us! Because my soldiers do not buckle or yield when faced with the cruelty of this world! My soldiers push forward! My soldiers scream out! My soldiers RAAAAAGE*** !!!"

I agree with you, Meydix

As an oni main who has been playing since 2019, I want to say that I completely agree, in patch 9.0.0 the flicks on oni were 180 degrees, and they were quite comfortable, but too sharp, and in update 9.1.0 they became smoother but more inconvenient, and this is seriously bad for people who learned to play on oni during this patch, we ask you to really bring back the old flicks

That's so funny. Oh no, poor unemployed oni ruined your chill day :₽
Bad oni. Nerfv him rn!
I also play it after work and sweaty matches only thing that keeps me wanting to play it. Cause I don't want to play boring button clicker and engineer simulator

And controllers still won't be able to pull the same flicks that mouses can now do. Both peripherals are fundamentally different, BHVR won't ever be able to do anything about it no matter what they do. Whatever input-related killer tweak they implement to a killer, mouses will be able to do it better than 'rollers. Always.

Which is probably why they're messing around with Oni's turning, trying to lessen that disparity.

I fully agree with Meydix. Those players who dedicated their game time to their favourite characters aren't deserve such an experience. All that they've been learning for thousands of hours just expires. BHVR, please, read this post carefully and take note. I think, it doesn't require much time for you to make your game enjoyable for both beginners and veterans, who remembers far 2016.
I hope Meydix's post won't be unnoticed. Thanks2 -
I think you're spending way too much of your attention on the "flick" and not taking into account that now Oni can pretty much curve around any obstacle with very little issue…

It's silly to think that Online Multiplayer characters don't change during it's life cycle.

He could always do that bro

It is true that the developers did a good job of giving players a more comfortable Oni experience, but there was no need to limit those players who were already great at playing the character to their abilities that they had spent years learning. In other words, the time spent learning the mechanics of the character and the experience gained over the years was lost, and now the fact that these players were able to get the maximum potential out of Oni that he was capable of, absolutely kills the point and desire to learn how to play Oni. Trying just doesn't get the job done. Allow pro players to continue to develop in their field and be an example for others who want to play not just for fun, but to achieve heights and surprise others. Please keep the ability to turn smoothly, it balances the game for Oni, but please bring back the ability to turn sharply 180°, it requires skill and experience, which allows players to open up even better.

not really curve like he can do it now
I have played him quite a lot and I think it feels great to use.1 -
I wish BHVR actually listened and brought back the old flicks. It made him infinitely more fun to play as and against. I don't get why people want it gone, cause it's a "bug" or whatever. He didn't need the nerf. His controller stuff should be tweaked by itself.

I seriously doubt they can make any changes to Oni's turning just for one input device. Not with their coding and history with it.
