Kill Switch update: We have temporarily Kill Switched the Forgotten Ruins Map due to an issue that causes players to become stuck in place. The Map will remain out of rotation until this is resolved.

I AM ANNOYED. Not by killers, not by teammates, I'm annoyed with myself.

I'm stuck in a cycle I can't escape. I constantly use the same build.

Lithe, Kindred, Windows, Off the Record.

Since I can't loop well and only play solo queue, I feel most comfortable with these perks. And that's why I keep using them. BUT I'm annoyed. I have so many perks I am curious about and when I watch my favorite streamer and see how he has a different build for each character, I'm jealous.

Because I'd also like variety. But I'm too scared. I'm afraid that with other perks I'm unfamiliar with, I'll get tunneled out of every match and get hardly any time to play and be useless to my team.

Does anyone here have any tips for me on how to become more braver to try out loads of different perks and how to escape this cycle?

Using the same build over and over is taking the fun out of the game for me. I AM TIRED of it !

You often just can’t do anything. Your fate is already sealed in the lobby — often regardless of what you bring.

As a survivor, you’re simply not alone. You can bring every tool to make yourself more stable in the match, but you have zero control over everything else that happens.

The best thing you can really do is try to find a SWF to play with for a while, just so you’re not stuck in these “special lobbies” forever.

Try setting challenges for your self, something like taking off windows and using dance with me, and challenge your self to escape 2 chases, or remove off the record for second wind and challenge yourself to staying safe for it to heal you

Well, this is a easy one. I think that the first thing that made me better as a survivor was to stop thinking about viable builds, and start having fun with what i had. The first tip i would give to you is to try and adept your survivors, this will let you try all their perks and you can find something you like. Maybe you'll find DH more rewarding than lithe, or you'll find out that you really only used OFT once every 3 matches.

The second one would be to try some killer matches and then mimic the build you like the most of the survivors you went against. Or maybe try the randomizer (search for dbd randomizer on google and try some matches with the builds it gives you), you'll see that there are much more viable options when you stop thinking about the outcome of the match and you start thinking about having fun :D

Just do it. That sounds like the most simplistic and brash answer but hear me out. Yes, you will get rolled but that's where the improvement lies. You can't get better unless you push yourself and your boundaries.

If you feel dumb for making the mistakes during this learning process, go anon mode. Your name won't be shown so the other players won't have a name to associate with the survivor learning how to work a new build. They can't pull up your profile if you're anonymous.

Something that helped me was playing the Chaos Shuffle. Trying random perks kinda changed me. Also, spectate and pay attention to people's builds and what they do with them.

Making friends helped me a lot. It gives you a certain confidence, and it helps you see how someone else does things in a more specific way than spectating. Send people friend requests. Some will accept. Some won't. No harm if they don't.

Just try and do it gradually.

Maybe one game swap Lithe for Dramaturgy or Dead Hard, just for fun.

The next game, try swapping Windows for We'll make it or something else!

I know how you feel I tend to stick to a comfort build sometimes too, but there's too much variety to not experiment with. If being tunnelled out is still a worry just reserve a slot and call it the 'anti-tunnel slot' and use OTR/DS or whatever else fits the category.

failure is the best teacher. old people aren't the smartest, they merely remember all their failures; each scar a lesson.

enter my Bootcamp and I'll have you whipped into shape in no time!

try this: Scene Partner, Object of Obsession, Troubleshooter, Resilience.

you now have no exhaustion perks, and no windows, but now you have safety in the eye of the storm. Troubleshooter and Scene Partner have great alternative auras, and Troubleshooter keeps you away from the highest priority generator. Resilience will help make you slightly more comfortable bring in danger. Object will help you get over any anxieties as now you have certain knowledge about the killer and their builds. no more guessing aura perks!

That is actually a great idea , because I struggle to decide which perks to choose.

I will do this A-Z perks thing right now :D

I've been there many, many times. I have a build and I think "I'm never changing this build". What usually gets me out of this I just change up my build with one swap. If I like the feel of the perk I swapped out I might sit wit that build for a few months and swap another out. Though, I do it as slow process. I might not change a build for many months.

Pick one of the perks you run and make that your testing slot. After that don't worry about the results. Win or lose try to focus on having fun.

    • Start like this: eliminate one of your four favorite perks. The transition process will be more natural and less traumatic. Start by eliminating "kindred", a great perk, but it can be replaced by learning to read the game's HUD. Then, once you've gotten used to playing without kindred, eliminate another perk and introduce something new/fun.

Bad teammates can ruin a lot. But u still can improve your skill anyway.

Personal, I prefer running more team oriented + info perks in solo.

Currently I running lithe, troubleshooter, hyperfocus and we’ll make it/off the record/windows of opportunity/vigil/dejavu/resilience/resurgence (+ medkit)
hyperfocus great but hard, yet encourage some skill and rewards u. Usually it helps me to commit to gen when it’s really needed

Troubleshooter underrated perk, really. It helps win u 50/50 in construction without LOS and keep distance for a while, because u see killer aura after dropping palette. So, u know the best moment how to trigger lithe. U can variate rotation of this two perks, so u can prolong chase. Because u also see the most progressed gen, u can run there after killer leaving u to commit to gen (especially when killer left u to go there and distract your teammate on gen), or being healed if u were injured.

4 chase perk or 4 genrush perk isn’t that good in solo, because solo requires u being more multi tasking oriented. Just personal opinion

One of my favourite things to do in DBD is to come up with silly perk builds, for example this "Lara Craft" build that I came up with to replicate the crafting system in her survivor series of games:

    laracraft.jpg

Blast mine + Chem Trap + Flash bang + Diversion. Alternatively, you could swap out one of these perks for a self healing perk and bring a fog vial as a smoke grenade instead (since you can craft those in her games as well).

Is this a good build? No, it's a terrible, very unbalanced build likely to make me an easy target for an early tunnel out. So when I do run stuff like this, I accept that I'm probably not going to survive. Past a certain point, that's really the only way you can play with suboptimal perk load outs in this game (the same is true for Killer as well). Just stop caring if you win or lose, that's my advice. I'm not fully there myself yet, but I'm trying to be less invested in winning or losing.

There's also a YouTuber called Mr TatorHead that plays without perks and has done so for a very long time. They have a ton of very indepth guides on their channel about looping and that would be my first port of call if I really wanted to learn how to loop well (but to be honest, I'm way too casual and lazy for that). If you can learn to loop without perks, you can basically run whatever silly nonsense that you want to.

I'd recommend going on customs with friends and asking to test some things out. Me and my friends did a custom recently where I decided to test out chem trap and blast mine and it was so fun. Just find a friend and do 1v1's if you are worried about new perks.

If you want a more immediate solution, maybe run new perks with similar gimmicks. Sprint burst, Deja Vu, Empathy and Decisive strike would be my recommendation. However feel free to mix and match, Empathy and windows can basically give you full aura reading on an injured survivor in chase, Off the record and lithe can let you take hits and get a clean escape.

Then maybe consider items that benefit your perks, Deja Vu and a tool box gets gens moving quick. Fog Vials and Sprint Burst give you essentially a free pre-run.

Only one who has some control are swf and strongest killers, other relay on their skill, perks, items and rng factor thats it if you get two teammates both under 500 hours and you have 3k and you get killer on your hours and skill level then the game is most likely gg or other scenarios like trapper rpd against coordinated swf your traps will have little to no effect and they will kick your butt.

You might also want to consider taking on a certain role in your matches, like in strategy-based games with medics, mages, and warriors. I often bring a gen build and I keep my map awareness very high through use of Empathy and close watching of the HUD. Sometimes I'm crafty enough (and my team is competent enough) that I walk through the exit gates without the killer ever even seeing me. Having the 7 presets set up will allow you to try out different roles with ease of access.

In my opinion, the most effective builds are those that are aimed at performing a specific task: healing, saving teammates from a hook, starting generators. It may not be as fun as running from a killer, but at least the team or part of it has a higher chance of surviving. Just my observation

Try running the "I have wallhacks on the Killer" build

    • Wiretap - Complete a gen to 40% to set up a Wiretap on that gen. That gives you permanent aura reading within a 14 meter radius of the gen. Tip: Repair one gen to 40% and then you go and tap another (so that it does not make any sounds), then set up Wiretap on the unsuspecting generator.
    • Alert - Every time the killer breaks something, you get a 5-second aura read on them. This includes breakable walls, pallets and generators.
    • Fogwise - If you are good at hitting great skillchecks while repairing generators, this perk is amazing. Gives you a 5-second aura read on the killer for every great skill check you hit.
    • Eyes of Belmont - Increases your aura reading time by an additional 2 seconds.
    • Alternate perk (for Fogwise): Scene Partner - While within the killers terror radius, you scream when looking at them, and then revealing their aura for 2 seconds, every time you scream (this can repeat up to 8 times).

Note: This build is completely useless against Undetectable killers, such as Tier 1 Myers, Ghost Face (in power) and Wraith (cloaked), or any killer perks that grant Undetectable.

Bless the meme builds. I'm so sad flashbang doesn't activate for me at all. Bought Leon for nothing.

I feel like you could learn looping with non-speed perks and that's about the same as no perks. I don't bring anything that helps me with looping/chase and I still win a good chunk of my chases. Recently, a lot of killers seem to get annoyed by my fog vials and Scene Partner clown combo and just don't even bother with chasing me haha

I didn't realise Flashbang was bugged. Wasn't gonna play today but thought I would test the build out and I got a Legion that DC'd because of ping issues, a Blight that tunnelled me out before I could get a single perk up and a Yui that unhooked me on death hook right in front of a Houndmaster who then tunnelled me out. So yeah, big regrets booting up the game and I wish I hadn't. Like I said, I'm trying to care less about winning or losing but it's difficult.

Tbh, wasn't really getting any flashbang value, so this is the one I would swap out for a healing perk and a fog vial. I'm more likely to accidentally flashbang my teamates when trying to heal them with a med-kit than to blind the Killer with it anyway.

It's not bugged, it's just bugged for me. I complete the criteria to make it and it just doesn't generate in the locker. It's always been that way. I've never been able to use it. I haven't cared enough to try to solve the problem though.

Yeah the accidentally blinding teammates happens to me more than the killer dropping me when people do it. So I'm just like, "Cool, I'm getting hooked AND I can't see."

I don't mind losing to people who play fair and well. It's the 4-person slugfests and the tunnelers that kill my vibe. Same when I'm playing killer and I can't get one hook in without the whole team clustering around to body block or intercepting every little chase I attempt.

As a healthy member of the community, and who plays soloQ, I'm here to tell you something: play for fun, not to escape. Don't take the game so seriously, neither for the killer nor for your teammates. You should not care if they take a match seriously when its imbalance in its system. Competitiveness in a game that is not balanced and full of a toxic community is killing the fun in this game.

I think you've noticed that most people think they're playing tournaments in public matches because streamers and tournaments outside of the game have made them believe that's the right thing to do instead of just having fun and not getting frustrated playing.

Personally, I stopped investing money in dbd over a year ago, and in a matter of time, I play it only when I feel like it, and when I get tired of it I go play something else or simply don't touch it for weeks and play other things lol Experiment with the perks you want or with perks that help you with your goals, for example "today I want to be the nurse and help heal more", then take perks for that. It doesn't matter if you die in the game, focus on your goals. Honestly, having an optimal team in SoloQ and a killer who isn't a tunneler and a camper and let the survivors enjoy the match is almost impossible. It's better to focus on having fun and not invest too much in something that doesn't make you feel good.

That's a shame and a very weird bug.

Probably something that support could help you with. But then again, knowing BHVR's spaghetti code, they might permanently equip No Mither on all of your Survivors trying to fix the issue or something else equally baffling could happen…

  • cogsturning

Hahahaha yeah, that's why I haven't bothered. My flashbangs are the least of their concerns.

  • I can't tell if you own all survivors/all perks but what helped me was doing all the adepts to see and use all the perks a few times.

There are some very niche perks which are actually really fun to play and even more fun if you can make them work on a regular basis.

Prime example for me: Red Herring.

Niche yes, but if you have a spread 3 gen at the end of the game you can distract killers with it pretty good. And it actually is funny to watch them from inside a locker when they run towards the gen for…nothing and then 180 off they go again. Surprisingly enough almost no killer checks lockers neither in this case, especially if you are lucky enough to have one a bit further away and not straight next to the gen. They mostly are stressed and feel like they run out of time.

    Diversion is fun too.
