Kill Switch update: We have temporarily Kill Switched the Forgotten Ruins Map due to an issue that causes players to become stuck in place. The Map will remain out of rotation until this is resolved.

Why do you play soloq?

This has puzzled me for awhile. I see a lot of doom and gloom about soloq as though it's some curse that's forced upon players so I have a question: why do people who only play soloq while constantly lamenting about it?

More specifically, why don't people send randoms that they liked playing with friend requests? Is it an anxiety thing? Are you afraid they'll reject you? Or that you'll have to perform?

Let me assure you that, as someone who is absolutely mid at both roles, I've made a good amount of friends just by being a helpful and loyal teammate. Just send the request. Or go in soft and send a gg and start a convo. You don't have to use voice chat (I never have), you don't have to stay partied up if you don't want to, and if you don't like playing with them--or you just straight up don't like thier vibe—just delete them.

I like the extra challenge + it helps keep my opinions on the survivor side of the game grounded. One mistake in a solo Q game can mean the Killer just wins and not a lot of people talk about those aspects.

I don't think you have to be in a party to have fun. I actually prefer solo most of the time and go on at odd times when I want to be alone. But a lot of people talk about solo like it's an unavoidable nightmare.

When I do it's because none of my friends are around to play or because I stand a better chance with randoms since they are quite often better than my friends (or me at times)

It can be hard to schedule to play with friends. So then I play soloQ. It used to be better so in past I didn't need many friends. Most often I play duo or trio now.

SoloQ has few advantages as well you can play however you want and it's good if you just want to be alone.

I certainly agree and feel like I know when my my soloq matches are lost within a minute of the game. It's so wildly uneven. Happens to me as killer too. I'll be trying one out for the first time and get smashed just to see a scoreboard full of p100s.

I like to play alone, most times, too.

It's fun to see how well I'll do with random teammates, their unknown perks, etc.

It's also fun when we 'synch up' and get stuff like saves/gens/etc done just through game sense.

I guess I just like each game being different/being a little mysterious and surprising.

Every game that saddles you with a random team of exactly the same. People do the stuff that makes sense to them, not you. That stuff might be baffling or even wrong, but that's the crux of it.

To OP: game fun. I have fun playing solo, I have fun playing killer. DBD is my favorite game.

I don't have any friends to play SWF with and I don't like adding randos as friends. I play in anon mode anyway. So I play nothing but soloQ. I have miserable experiences but I have good ones too.

And honestly, when I'm having a bad match and I'm getting frustrated, I'd rather be getting frustrated with strangers instead of friends.

Yeah I hear that. It's like Chaos Shuffle: Human Edition.

Probably the most satisfying things I've ever accomplished have been in soloq. I had a teammate get downed on an upper floor of Dead Dawg yesterday after gens were done and the killer was just waiting for him to bleedout. The other two (a duo, I think) gave up and left. I stayed on the lower level and used gestures to get him to crawl to a hole and drop down. I someone got him up and out the door with seconds left before bleedout. Pulling off something crazy like that with zero communication or knowledge of each other is a feeling that can't be beat.

I don't think it's unfair to state that solo q is the worst, so it's natural that those who play it remark on that often. As to why, it's just the way to play it really. I did have a fun solo buddy I'd play with who was on console so we never actually communicated, but we had the same play style and it was fun. Otherwise I don't mesh with a lot of players and we don't always play at the same times. The high turnover means that I'm usually the only one still around.

I don't necessarily think it is that bad though, it's just wildly unpredictable. My escape rate has slightly improved since I've been playing more solo. There's this idea that "party = success" and that's not at all true. There are so many types of parties too. Duos, trios, or quartets. Some members will be worse than others. You can have no communication, or have messaging or voice chat. It can make it less frustrating cause you can blow off steam together, but you can still do bad regardless.

But mostly it's people that complain about it like they are barred from hitting that "send friend request" that I don't get. Hell, just ask in this forum and you'll probably get some.

As someone with autism, I've discovered the hard way that I'm just not able to judge interactions and social cues online. I don't even do that very well in person. And after some pretty terrible bullying from another platform, not dbd related, I've decided that I no longer want a "social circle" in a game or club. It creates too much of an avenue for hurtful situations that I wouldn't experience otherwise. I'm burned out on it.

And no, I never engage with post game chat. I'm on console.

That's how you're supposed to play DBD if bhvr had the balls to balance around solo queue, if you play swf with voice comms you get all info perks for free

I'm sorry to hear about the bullying. I'm glad to say I've found some people who are really understanding and inclusive.

I have the opposite situation though. I'm much, much worse at real life than I am at online interactions. I'm so cold, unfriendly, and dismissive that it causes me actual problems, but in this game I'm 50% helpful teammate, 50% goofy clown, and that seems to endear me to people, even my opponents.

I'm also on console and hope the calls for universal end game chat never happen. Some of the stuff I've seen people say on there is insane. It's bad enough I still get people bothering to type in my name and send me rude messages.

I get what you're saying, but at the same time I don't know that it's entirely relevant to the experience of solo q. Speaking personally, I'm not like "UGH this would be so much better with friends". My performance is about the same with friends as without. It's more that the game is balanced around having a solid team with good synergy, which you don't find with randos or even friends to be perfectly honest. Solo being more fun ultimately means the game starts to lean more casual and that's what players want when they complain about how bad solo is.

Corpses and people in comas are the only ones that are less of social butterflies than me yet I have quite a lot of people on my friends list. But most of them I've never exchanged a single word with. You can sync up and mesh well without communicating while still getting that comforting feeling of being part of a unit.

One of my recent success stories was getting a 4E against a Ghoul in SoloQ on Backwater Swamp. My teammates could last in chase and did generators. The doors are open but I'm the last to the open gate and the Ghoul catches me and downs me. The three teammates are all in the gate and trying to distract the killer. I have Unbreakable. The Ghoul is distracted long enough that I pick myself back up and run off while everyone else escapes. I manage to loop the Ghoul around the dock and shake them just long enough for me to reach the gate, but they do their tentacle grab that blocks the exit gate for some insane BHVR reason. I get downed at the blocked exit, but at the very literal last nanosecond before I'm picked up, the block goes down and I crawl out to escape.

That's probably one of the finest SoloQ moments I've had in recent memory. It's possible to succeed and have a good time in SoloQ. It may be unlikely, but it's possible, and I've experienced it multiple times over years.

I work third shift so when I play it's late at night. Not exactly conducive to finding people to play with. Plus it's pretty rare I come across a player that I'd like to be matched with again tbh. Solo-queue can be rough but I still (mostly) enjoy the game. When I stop enjoying it I take a break. Sometimes a very long break.

I enjoy the one-and-done approach to solo q.

Sometimes your teammate are great, sometime they are a mixed bag.

To me, it keeps in interesting, every match is a fresh start.

    cogsturning Member Posts: 2,240

Hell yeah. It's such a satisfying feeling when it comes together. I had a similar instance recently where I was injured and I couldn't safely get to the door cause the killer was nearby. I Plot Twisted in a nearby bush and my remaining teammate kept the killer busy until I could hop up and sprint on past. Just beautiful.

why do people who only play soloq while constantly lamenting about it?

I'm not sure this is absolutely true, I feel like a lot of people who lament soloq are either killer mains or SWF mains who have been dropped into soloq. There are definitely soloqers who complain about it, but that's true for everything in the game.

I'm one of the few who preferred the style before they added what other survivors were doing to the HUD (though it was a necessary change). I really enjoyed the feel of not being sure what was going on.

That said, there are some issues with soloq that can ruin the fun. Not all of them are under BHVR's ability to control, but some are. Getting into a game, a few minutes going by and then you see someone who is farming or just AFK. The feeling of getting stuck in a game while the killer is searching for a 4k while you lay slugged. Fighting another survivor to be the first to unhook because you both brought the same build. Having a mix of super sweats and casuals can ruin the experience for either group.

More specifically, why don't people send randoms that they liked playing with friend requests? Is it an anxiety thing? Are you afraid they'll reject you? Or that you'll have to perform?

The last time I tried making random groupings in an online game was over 25 years ago and never really cared for it.

With DbD I feel like it would ruin the experience. If I had a friend who was interested in the game I'd definitely give it a try, but not really worth going in with someone I don't know.

I mostly play soloQ/duoQ. SWF feels too boosted to me. I don’t hate coordination — I just hate when it turns the match into a joke.

You say you’re playing chill… but suddenly it’s:
    “He’s behind shack.”
    “Basement’s in main.”
“Heal me, bodyblock him, reset, let’s go do this and this gen.”
And poof — that Ghostface ain’t scary anymore. Because 40% of killers lose their core mechanics when every move gets called out. Myers isn’t scary if he’s always seen. Just another sad man in a mask getting deleted by team GPS. Pig? Just a poor little pig getting called out non-stop. Trapper and Hag? Two more killers whose abilities get completely denied the entire match.

Too much SWF kills the fun for me against 50–60% of the killer roster, and it even starts hurting my own macro at a certain point, because you start relying more on callouts than your own game sense. Every now and then, yeah, playing on comms with friends is fun — but it gets boring fast.

    • I like SoloQ, and I definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys challenging and challenging games. It's definitely a more complex experience than Killer or SWF with communications. My only major complaint is not being able to use certain builds effectively... in SoloQ, it's just a waste of time, but that's not my teammates' fault; I can't expect them to be clairvoyant and know my build.🤣

i've played this game with so many people and i just never really enjoy it. i like the carefree nature of solo queue. no expectation. no planning. queue when i want to. break when i want to. and make the choices i want to. with a group you're kinda stuck playing "for the group", but in solo queue i can play for myself. and honestly, playing for myself is a lot more fun. yes, i probably will leave you in the basement. yes, i might let you double hook. no, i probably won't save you in the end game. and yes, i'll probably let you down more than you realize. i might even bring pebble just so i can send the killer in your direction. and that's fun for me. that's kind of what solo queue is about.

Solo q is completely fine until u get ultra sweaty killer or your teammates tends to play not that way as u expected.

I like it. Personally. Cause I tend to bring team perks for solo. Doing really random stuff that can be helpful. Show teammate that it may be scourge hook and when he realised it u feel so satisfied. Trigger dms on cold gen and see how some teammate happily nods or when u bring reassurance and play for the save to do risky endgame is so nice. As soon as u play solo by wise altruism and others doing it as well this is my fav matches ever.

It also can bring surprises. I played against p100 huntress recently, she was incredible sniper. But before realising it, I was grumbled at my teammates, thinking that they were having trouble playing against a huntress on RPD. And only towards the middle of the game, being in chase myself, I realized that it wasn't my teammates who were bad, but the player on her was so damn impressive. I doubt that playing SFW would have brought the same emotions, because from the very beginning I understood from my friend's voice that we were cooked.

Y, kinda same experience here. A lot depends on the time of day. Sometimes I get absolute dogwater SoloQ matches, but I love those moments when a SoloQ team just clicks.

Especially when you throw Shoulder on a SoloQ mate or bodyblock for them in chase, covering them just right… so many players get super thankful and instantly switch into full teamplay mode. Honestly, ….the best teamplay I’ve ever had wasn’t in SWF — it was in SoloQ.

Sure, in SWF you’re like 100x stronger. Comms and perfect coordination are insane, especially when it’s purely about escaping. But it just feels way more exciting and intense when that kind of synergy happens in SoloQ. It’s a gamble, yup, but when it pays off…

…feels better than a 5-gen chase or another boring full team SWF escape.

I used to play with friends who played the game regularly, just like I did back in the day. I haven't played since Dracula was released, but Solo gameplay was decent for the most part. Some days though, all the matches are miserable for different reasons.
I turn off the game when this happens. It's probably the MMR or time of day, where I end up matched with Killers who have very dominant playstyles, and Survivors who have no game sense or play as though they're alone in the lobby.

  • BbQz
    BbQz Member Posts: 414

So times I just want to get in and play. Ya a lot of times solo experience is kinda terrible. But for every person you add to your lobby expect 5-10 mins of wasted time. And I'm including my self as I have two kids and some times I just can't get in and que up. Just like adding people means getting snacks bathroom breaks smoke breaks and other interrupts. Or your getting "let me eat real quick" and now your waiting for 20 mins but while yes I can just play while they do that it's an extra layer complication

i play for fun, i don't play to win

which actually ends up with me escaping more than the usual SWEATY BUILD TOXIC MINDSET player

that and fact im a killer main and tend to know the lil tricks that most killers do lol

For a couple reasons, some of which contribute to the others.

    1. For some reason we always get connection issues when I played with friends. (I.e. it would take forever for us to connect to a game.)
    2. I have so many more hours in the game and they just don't keep up with it like I do so stuff goes over their heads.
    3. Other games come out and now they don't have it downloaded.

I'm also super altruistic and very team-minded. I die for strangers all the time and I never leave anyone behind unless they're in the basement on the opposite side of the game and the EGC is halfway through or something impossible like that. I play with people who are similar to me and were often so focused on helping each other that we accidentally throw the match with reckless saves.

But yeah, those end game saves in soloq are the greatest. When I get hooked at the end and see all three people charging over I'm just like 🥰

Not sure if this question is for me as I'm not someone who constantly lamenting about it. I'm one of the defenders of it. I'm 100% soloq player these days. Haven't played in a SWF in a few years.

100% honest here, I enjoy soloq. Sure, you can get teammates that can be frustrating but I'm one of those people if I see people trying, I don't mind. You can make the worst mistake possible and totally screw it up for the whole team but if I see you were trying, I don't get frustrated, well not too much. I also enjoy the randomness of it.

Yeah same. If you're active and you're trying then I'm good with you. The selfish ones and the hiders are the ones I can't tolerate.
