Are you talking about Bloodpoints or Emblem points? The advice for maximizing either of those is a bit different. Like, with Bloodpoints, you earn garbage for working on a gen alone and a lot more for working on a gen with someone else. However, for Emblem points, I've found that I'm better off working on gens alone if I'm trying to get a pip, because working on a gen co-op eats into my own Lightbringer score.

The common denominator is efficiency. Work on gens as much as you can, or rescue others when needed, but always try to be as efficient as possible while doing so.
And remember, there are other ways to earn points in certain categories. If you are being chased by the killer for example, you get a lot of points towards your badges, depending on the length of the chase, plus you get a lot of boldness BP.
A lot of killer interactions also contributes to your Survival score.

The more efficient I am, the worse my scores often are. That's the sad truth. The faster my team wins, the less points I earn both in terms of emblems and Bloodpoints. With Emblems, being efficient in the early grades can get pips, but as you get to the higher grades you need a lot more to pip.

If I think I'm going to die, cleansing Totems is a good way to earn Survival points, but if I survive then those points are mostly wasted. However, if I need Lightbringer emblem points, cleansing Totems can give me a needed boost there. Hiding and working on gens in the killer's terror radius is good for Emblem points but is a waste of time or unnecessary risk if earning Bloodpoints.

There's a bit of trial and error to see what works best for any player, but basically learning the Bloodpoint and Emblem categories and what goes towards each is a big help. When my friend plays, if he wants to pip, he plays with a mindset to pip. If he wants to earn Bloodpoints, he plays with a mindset to earn BP. And whichever one he's doing, he does it well, but his points in the other type do suffer.
