What Cant "PTB"s Instead Become a Seperate Gamemode?

At least for things like map changes/new maps, character and perk changes, and new mechanics. We know they can change/modify a character and maps on 2 different gamemodes thanks to 2v8.

Having the entire playerbase be able to test out changes like these rather than just Steam players would help a tone with feedback and you can even add BP incentives to encourage people to test out these changes.

Yeah. It's fun to be a console player screaming into the void here, "Please don't touch Myers." I think console players have realized the game is always going to be in its current state, it's never going to get better. And some killers will never feel good on console. But BHVR could at least not take a killer whose power works on console and ruin it. That would be nice. But console players can't play the PTB, and even if they did they might not've noticed his changes behind the fifty million other more glaring changes in that PTB.

(And no, I've never felt Myers was unfair when facing him as survivor. I even found Tombstone a fun challenge. He was a killer I saw a decent amount, so I know people enjoyed playing him, but I didn't go against him constantly, so I didn't see any evidence his power was so unfair that the entire playerbase flocked to him. I see Ghostface constantly, however. In my MMR/region, Ghostface is probably the most common killer. Just giving this as some background to my opinions on the matter. Myers felt like he was in a perfect spot. I miss going against him. I've seen him twice since his update, and when I do, I'll never be wondering "Does he have Tombstone?" Instead, all I've witnessed is a couple console killers whiffing over and over again trying to use his Slaughtering Strike.)

I think it’s because some changes on PTB, especially last one, is not about adding few new mechanics and assets, but changing fundamentals.

Or actually like trying a whole new engine version. I’m just afraid it is not technically realistic to put betas as event. Because well, they are a whole different version of the game.

Just making two different Michaels for the game will require to double the space for them, because from code perspective they are different characters

@tes mentioned this above, but I'm pretty sure BHVR has said it would require the game to be twice as large because they are different engine versions. I have to make a new download for the PTB if I want to play it on Steam.

There's also the issue that they need to certify their updates with the consoles in a way that they don't with Steam, which means the update would need to go in awhile before the PTB, meaning the version players are testing might have substantial differences.

I dont know why they don't do this on at least a small scale. If the actual ptb can't be turned into an event, they could at least incorporate aspects of potential changes into events. They were going to do the basekit Unbreakable in the Chaos Shuffle then just canceled the whole thing. Stuff like that would help them gather large masses of feedback from a more varied playerbase on one idea at a time, instead of throwing a thousand ideas out at once for one small group to try.

All this is true, plus those certifications aren't free either.

What could possibly work is a game version that's always up, separate from the live game. For instance, both DayZ and Minecraft have separate "Experimental" modes available on Xbox, and I imagine there's something similar on the PlayStations. So it's doable, but would require work.

One thing is clear, the current PTB system isn't robust enough to get enough eyeballs on the proposed changes. Only a fraction of those on Steam who can participate actually do, and after the second or third day are already gone from it as well.

Even if it can't be done as a PTB, I still think having a mode focusing on feedback for the new feature and getting a larger amount of data would help them by having the new killer in a seperate queue, or new maps or perks.

That way they can get targetted polish feedback on it.

Because the main reason for the PTB is to identify major bugs that crash the game, then to get the community sentiment on changes. Pushing a patch which can potentially crash the game to consoles is simply not going to be what happens, especially when console verification takes days and in order for everyone to be at parity. PC updates would have to wait for console verifications so that they all match what the server is expecting, which is yet another reason why PTB will always be PC only.

I don’t think it would make any difference. We have seen so many examples of busted things from the PTB get released live despite overwhelming negative feedback. Why would this change that?

What Im mainly referring to is testing out the smaller things such as perk, killer, or map changes. These can be put into the game at the same time a major patch is launched and then made into a temporary modifier later down the line.
