DBD on PS5 and PS5 Pro has input delay, can we fix it?
Hi,
Even my steam deck has better input speed, no it's not my TV as I used an OLED lmao. I've tested on several monitors and its much harder to hit great skill checks on PS5, even with a wired controller and i think it's something to do with the games optimisation? it seems a little less impactful when I look at the ground.
Is anyone else having this issue? It really puts me off playing the console version and I really would like to play it on there.
Unless someone else knows a fix for this? Help would be amazing, if not then hopefully the feedback gets through.

Have either of you ever played on PC to compare? I don't mean this as a omg PC is better (I prefer console), I'm just saying my inputs on the pc client is considerably more responsive.

Thanks for taking time to respond, do you play on PC also? It's just so I Know this isn't just being used to the delay so don't notice it sort of thing.

Maybe I know what you mean. I am used to play on PS5, but want to switch on PC. I am constantly failing skill checks now, cause the input is "too early" for me on PC…

I use to notice this with my Xbox. I'm not sure but I think it was just due to the 60 fps limit when I would notice it. On my PC I could set the desktop frame rate to 60 and it would feel the same. If I set my desktop to 120 or higher the input delay would practically go away, even when running the game at 60fps anyway. I haven't tried this since they added 120 support in game so I'm not sure if that would act the same or not.
For the most part, when I had my steam deck, I didn't notice much difference between it and the Xbox. By chance are you using the steam deck OLED? Maybe the 90 hz refresh rate is helping it.

Yeah I'm using the steam deck OLED, I figured using an OLED with my PS5 Pro would make it better but I suppose it doesn't help

Yeah this is it exactly, they are very different I feel and it makes switching platforms a nightmare like you are relearning timings all over again.

No I don't play on PC so I'm afraid I can't compare it. I watch a few PC streamers. Not the same I know. But I really don't notice any difference.

I don't know for sure but maybe the PS5 only switches to 120hz when a game supports it. So unlike the steam deck or PC, which you could still manually set higher, perhaps it always keeps the tv refresh rate at 60.
Again, I haven't tested this since they added 120hz, in game settings, to PC. It may not even make a difference anymore. I always thought it was odd because I expect a game to have more input delay at 60, but running the desktop refresh rate higher always made the delay better it's not something I've ever really noticed with any other game.
You may be able to test it by hooking your steam deck to your TV and change the steam decks settings to 60 fps and the games settings to 60 fps and see if it feels similar to the PS5. I've never used a steam deck OLED so you may just be able to do it with the steam deck screen itself as well

You're right, I've never played on anything but Playstation so I really have nothing to compare to.
I can say that PS5 is leagues better than PS4 though.

That's completly understandable! Thanks for the input on the situation, my friend who plays on PS5 says the same and they only play console too. So it's why I ask, because I know I'm being really particular and trying to understand why I feel this difference.
True, I could see if the steam deck has settings for it. Honestly though would it hurt to have a high refresh rate mode for ps5 pro I wonder? hm…

No it wouldn't hurt at all. Even if it lowered the graphics settings and what not, I think it should be a feature, if possible. I have a fairly capable PC but have always run the game on low settings anyway.

I'm on PS5 and have no issues. I came from the Switch originally which did have an input delay, so I'd wager if youre coming from a PC to PS5 you'd probably notice a difference but for me it's fine

I noticed it too. You always have to press the button a bit earlier to get a great, which is annoying, but that got better after I switched from TV to monitor and the update that made skill checks slower helped a lot.

I play primarily on PS5 and some on PC, and there is absolutely an input delay on PS5 relative to PC. It's most notable on skill checks, as mentioned above. If you hit the button at the point it would net a great skill check on PS5 on PC, you'll miss it because you were too early.
This lag is also present on other places as well.

I'm glad it's not just me, I really hope it gets fixed because I'd really like to play ps5 more comfortably. I tested it on my monitor and it still persists so, I think it's definately a console only issue as my friend let me try it on xbox too and it exists there also.

there is a slight delay on ps5 pro you are correct. I don't know why maybe it's because of 60 fps. because on my pc I play a higher frame rate than ps5 so it could be that. i wish they would add 120 fps mode to ps5 version of the game but they won't care i think to do so.

the reason i know there is a delay and can confirm is because i'm playing on a monitor that supports 120fps with hdmi 2.1 and i have it enabled on game mode and everything on my ps5 is set to low latency mode but still there is a slight delay in the skill checks of the game on ps5 version. VRR is enabled on both my monitor and on my ps5 settings so it's either a 60 FPS issue or some other weird issue.

Also, the images of the game on Playstation store are still not updated, the images are from 2017-2020 DBD, I would imagine this would be very confusing to new players/casuals

If there's a delay I've never noticed it but I'm probably just used do it. Great skill checks are actually hard to land though, so maybe? But my TV is also old and struggling so that probably matters too.

I play Dead by Daylight on both PS5 and Xbox Series S and I am consistently getting more input delay on PS5, especially on skill checks. On Xbox, if I press the button right as the indicator hits the ‘Great’ zone, it registers correctly. On PS5, using the same TV and settings, I have to press noticeably earlier or I miss the skill check or only get a Good. It feels like the game is delaying my inputs on PS5.

Came back to say tried a new HDMI, it's just a console delay thing, coz even my steam deck is fine connected to my tv input delay wise. LOL

Not just playstation. All consoles have horrible input lag, but it is consistent enough that console players adapt to still hit skill checks. If you switch from PC you will notice it. I think it is caused by v sync being forced on. If you turn it on on your PC it will be exactly like console.

This is the kinda thing I wanted to investigate when I had a chance.
I knew it wasn't: -
- The controller Bluetooth
- The console controller libraries
- The HDMI cable
- The frame rate
- The TV refresh rate
Thankyou for doing the leg work and showing that it can be reproduced on PC, and thus proving the cause.
Now to brush up on my v-sync knowledge to see if this is expected (I always forget how vsync precisely works until I look it up).
Either way, good job that man!

I did notice a difference when I switched to PC but it was also on a different monitor so I chalked it up to that. Wouldn't surprise me if it was console specific though.

does your TV have a setting called "Game Mode" ? if so turn it on

i mean both will have delay no matter what if you're not using a wired connection for your controller. I'd recommend doing this, It fixes the problem for me at least

No problem! Ultimately I think screen tearing is preferable to input lag, I wish the option was available on consoles.

What's baffling ne is I started looking into it, my TV has a refresh rate of 60Hz and PS5 is capped at 60fps…
So input lag doesn't make sense unless I'm getting constant slight fps misses... 😵💫

Funny you mention that, I learned that if your monitor is at 60hz and you're running your game at 60 frames, you will STILL get screen tearing if v sync is off (unless something like nvidia g sync or amd's freesync is in play). And if v sync IS on, you WILL get the input lag, regardless of monitor refresh and frames. On console, regardless of which monitor I used, I still got the input lag. Tested on Xbox series X and standard PS5 on monitors with amd free sync and one with Gsync.

Aye I've been reading more and more into it and thinking about how vsync works, and yeah it seems kinda unavoidable that you get input lag with vsync on.
If I understand correctly, for PS5 and Xbox you can mitigate it as much as possible with a 120Hz refresh rate screen for the 60 FPS game, but you're still gonna get input lag no matter what because effectively what you're seeing on screen is simply not updating every frame flawlessly to match what the game is updating in its CPU logic, especially if its not a stable 60 fps at all times...
Oh well, I actually prefer the input lag for skillchecks on console cause they aren't as boring, and at theast the input delay is consistent and learnable. I don't notice anything when running around otherwise... so just a minor nuisance in the grand scheme.
