What are Midchapters?

Are they generally just bigger updates? Is that why they are called that?

    They are usually updates that fix bigger issues or make changes to perks or powers. They are usually when they balance the new content that was released in the chapter release. So usually you see changes to the new perks, killers power etc. Still they usually also release several other bug fixes and maybe some changes to other characters, maps or ui.

    The other reason is they usually feature something like a new survivor only instead of a full chapter with a killer. For example mikaela / Nicholas Cage

    Others explained what the content is. But they are called midchapter bc they release in the middle of the chapter.

    Chapter > 1,5 months > Midchapter > 1,5 months > Chapter
