Welcome to the Boiler Room: Let's Discuss Freddy (Pre-Revamp)
At the moment I'm in the progress of Prestiging Freddy "The Nightmare" (Currently I'm Lvl. 36 of P2) as I fell in love with this character after I rolled the doctor through his 3 prestige ranks.
Before I start with this topic, I just want to say that I do understand the problems Freddy is having towards general gameplay especially at higher ranks, he has issues! But then again being thrown into a furnace does that to a person...
But overall once you learn to work with his weaknesses and patch then out with perks and items he really isn't that bad... There are certain very reliable items that can make him a bane to survivors and yes you sometimes need to alter basic tactics and wing it to make stuff work but thats what makes him fairly diverse. I'll be going through some items I use regularly in order to get 3-4k games frequently.
One general point:
Freddy is a class that does pretty well when tunneling and hook camping. You don't need to but it does work out very well for him. Every rescue means you'll draw 2 people into the dream and every smart killer will go for the weakest character first, you're a killer act like one!
Perks:
Some perk combo's are quite good for Freddy once you learn their synergy.
Discordance & Surveillance: The combo of battlefield domination these 2 perks give you is amazing. (On every killer actually, not only Freddy) Since the revamp of the totem placement survivors spawn closer together a lot more and thus they will work on generators together faster, "Discordance" makes sure you can home in on the generator being repaired and thus you can scatter the survivors fast. Putting them into the dreamworld! "Surveillance" makes sure you always know when a broken generator gets worked on again so you flock to it like a rabid wolf and continue the chase.
Knockout and Deerstalker: Highly underrated extremely useful for Freddy when paired up. Freddy is at this moment still a character that can benefit a lot from slugging his prey (just leave 'em on the ground) as long as they are in the dreamworld and they will be if you can slam 'em into the dust. Then you can always see then once you move further away from them. "Deerstalker" even at rank one only has a 4m. blindspot and then you can home in perfectly when returning to a slugged survivor. "Knockout" just makes it harder for other survivors to find the slugged character at rank 3 they need to be in a 16m. radius to see him/her. When the character crawls around they wake it even harder on the resque patrol to find 'em because a smart player will see where the drop is and go there. This combo also opens up a tactic shift in the alter game! You can start slugging at any time when you equip these 2 perks. So when there are only 2 survivors left you can draw 'em both inot the dream when one is on the hook getting rescued. Then tunnel the damaged character into the groudna nd since the other one is also being able to be tracked you can home in and go for the kill. (You don't even need "Knockout" if you do this "Deerstalker" is a plus though.)
Hex: Ruin and Dying Light: This combo is actually pretty good, "Hex: Ruin" buys you time in the early game if the totem is in a good place and the survivors are on the slow side you have an easy 4-5m. on the clock you can track down your Obsession if that character dies before or not long after the Totem gets destroyed "Dying Light" will take over the repair hindrance.
BBQ & Chilli: Do I need to tell you why this is good? I hope not!
Franklin's Demise: Nice skill when survivors bring a lot of items. The dream world is fairly disorienting so finding that nice toolbox or flashlight again is a pain in the old ass for them if you knock it out of their hands.
Monitor and Abuse: This is actually a great skill for Freddy once a chase stops your terror radius will only be 16m. everything in the dream world will be shown to you making it easier to continue the chase and making sure they can't run to far away!
Insidious: Offers you the capability to drop all Terror Radius thus lighing up your Dream victims like the 4th of July! (Thanks to @letuce)
Items:
As far as items go, there are a few that are quite capable of greatness, sadly they are not the pink or purple ones.
Wool Shirt, Green Dress & Blue Dress: Making it harder for survivors to get out of the dream is what it's all about. They are slowed 50% in the dream so the longer you keep 'em there the better.
Garden Rake & Prototype Claws: Closing the distance fast when you pull someone into the dream is where you get that insta-hit once they are are sucked into the dream. You want this and you'll need to learn the timing on that strike.
Sheep Block, Unicorn Block & "Z" Block: Reducing the time it takes for the survivors to transition into the dreamworld is nice, you don't need these but for example the Sheep Block can offset the 0.5s. increased delay that the "Green Dress" will give you and that dress in one of the best items to keep the survivors not failing skill checks. Since "Cat Block" increases the skill checks making it easier to escape the dream you might want to ignore that as much as possible you really don't want to use "Cat Block".
Extra Tips:
- Slugging is pretty good during the 2nd half of the game when 1 or maybe 2 survivors are already dead.
- Always break the generator (more for "Surveillance" then anything else you need that watchful eye) after you started the dream sequence you can home into the targets fast enough when they leave your terror radius, don't think they will run to fast.
- Your power weakens once the exit gates are powered. That's is Freddy's weakest part of the game do whatever you need to to stop that from happening. 1 single hatch escape is what it is but it's better then them all walking out on you.
- Make sure you tunnel to your hearts content, as soon as you stop badgering them they will try to escape the dream. Don't let them do that!
- If you use obsession skills like "Dying Light" make sure you use the early game window that perks like "Hex: Ruin" or "Corrupt Intervention" create to find you obsession. Then plow that character hard and relentlessly you need that "Dying Light" sooner rather then later.
At the moment I usually run with: Discordance, Surveillance & BBQ & Chilli the 3rd point I cater to the situation. Hex: Ruin is nice but if they don't fix and only search for the totem you might gimp your other perks a little. All in all with that setup I can get 3 kills every game and if I can find the 4th guy before he gets to the hatch it's not uncommon to get 4k games.
Freddy really isn't to bad... I just wanted to share this little post with y'all and see if other people have more good points for Freddy's current gameplay. I do hope the revamp that is coming up will do him credit!

As a Freddy main, I approve of this. I wouldn't use deerstalker on him since it's pretty much built in.
Also insidious is a perk that works wonders on him. Lost someone? Chill for a few seconds. Still can't see them? They're in a nearby locker.
Obsession perks than want you to avoid them are great on him, since you always know if the person you just slept is obsession or not.
Another great thing about Freddy is you can always casually drop a Chase to dream or chase another one, break a gen. And just resume your target again. In fact this allowing someone to escape can lead you to more survivors. And you can see if the survivor is being healed, woken, or just doing a gen.
Freddy can also prevent unhooks if everyone is asleep. Freddy is strong, just needs some bug fixes.

Monitor and Abuse is so good on him. Freddy doesn't necessarily have to be good in a chase once you realize you don't have to chase with him. Get the initial hit, and if it's an unfavorable loop, break the chase and sleep more people. Then go back, as they've probably left the loop. As OP said, you need someone dead ASAP. That can be said for any killer, but Freddy gets so much more powerful against 3 survivors. It's insane.

I despise the Freddy rework, especially after the Legion fiasco. I'm convinced it will lower the skill ceiling for all of us who put in the time and effort to really get to know his in and outs.

Oh he certainly has some issues, but they don't need a rework to be addressed IMO. Some QoL changes would have sufficed quite well.
