Kill Switch update: We have temporarily Kill Switched the Forgotten Ruins Map due to an issue that causes players to become stuck in place. The Map will remain out of rotation until this is resolved.

As a console user, should I simply give up on expecting this game to ever run well?

It seems any update that improves the frame rate of this game on console is very short lived, because soon after it, other updates will come out and make the game a slideshow again. I'm wondering do the developers simply not play or test the game on console, or simply don't care?

It's an Unreal 4 game. There are tons and tons of UE4 games out that look spectacular and perform amazing. DbD neither looks spectacular nor does it perform well. This used to be exclusively a killer problem, but it seems to have even seeped its way onto the survivor side as well.

Next month marks two years since the game launched on consoles. Other teams on other games do amazing things with their games in mere weeks or months, let alone a full year. Yet, we seem to be stuck in quicksand, no real progress is getting done on making the game not run like dog **** on console. Can anyone imagine how this is going to run on the Nintendo Switch later this year? Are we talking 18 frames per second docked, 7 not docked? Jeebus.

Many killers are unplayable on corn maps because there are too many frame drops. Swamp maps have gone back to being terrible maps. Haddonfield is still complete trash for killers because of frame drops. And Doctor is once again dog crap on every single map. This morning I mind gamed a survivor at a pallet with Myers and went to swing and the frames dropped to zero. I reappeared and regained control of my character 5 feet to the left, outside of a wall, while the survivor ran to the other side of the junction and hopped through the window. Bloodlust should be something a killer longs for in a chase. I fear it, because I have no idea what the game is going to do to me when it activates.

I know the team is all about that money ever since the big update introduced currency, but how about taking a break from coloring some new shirt to sell for $10 and fix one of the core issues of the game?

Thanks for reading. As a reward, you get a FREE thread bonus, a well placed hex totem!

This also happened this morning. LOL. Just boggles the mind.

I'm playing on PS4 Pro. For me, the performance improved with patch 2.6 but after the most recent patch 2.7 it got worse again. More frame drops than before. It's sad that the positive trend didn't continue.

(Keep in mind that I'm only talking about PS4. I read from Xbox players that the performance on their console got better.)

I started on a launch Xbox and now play on an X, it doesn’t make any difference.

I really wish you could see how amazing the game runs now on the X1X which is also "on console". (50-60fps)

I wonder if all those still on the original base PS4/Xbox will invest in the PS5 (announced) or Xbox 2 (if they call it that) which may be as early as 2020.

How old are the base consoles now anyway, (looked it up) they will be 6 years old in November, TBH I thought they were older than that.

I have no problems with the connection. From my experience it seems to have improved a bit.

Killers were completely fodder to the point I put it down on console. PC is where I belong!

@Well_Placed_HexTotem "There are tons and tons of UE4 games out that look spectacular and perform amazing. "

The first half of this statement is correct. Games running on UE look amazing.

The second half is just flat out wrong. UE has so many issues it's not even funny. Most relating to collisions, which is why hitboxes are so messed up in this game.

Just look at Epic's flagship UE titles Unreal and Gears of War. Both of these games have so many bugs it's literally UNREAL.

Unreal Engine makes games look nice, but it isn't very good for making them play nice.

Runs great on mine almost as good as other 60fps titles such as Overwatch, Warframe, BO 4 etc.

No idea why its bad on your 1X though, I use a 50" 1080p (non HDR no 4k) TV but can't see why that would make it run better on mine compared to yours.

For starters why would you compare hit boxes on shooters versus a melee title. Also, literally every engine ever used to make a shooter has had hit box issues.

You can also take any engine and list some games that run poorly. UE is no exception, even UE4. But the fact remains that there are plenty of games out there that prove that with quality optimization, you can get a game that runs very well.

So is the DbD team at BHVR incompetent, or is making the game run well just too low a priority behind further monetization?

Maybe you don’t run killer or don’t run the ones most affected, idk.

Also DbD isn’t a 60 FPS console title. Their roadmap says they want to hit that eventually. Not there yet.

    It's not looking good, huh?

Plus they are probably more concerned with getting it to Nintendo Switch right now.

The game has never ran better than it currently runs on console.

It's not perfect, but I'll take it.

I have a collection of screenshots like that too love them hahaha Frames got way better compared to how they were the last two years, don't know about xbox though heard the performance was even worse on it then ps4

Yeah this is basically why everyone laughed when they said switch was the next version, sometimes it barely runs on the current consoles... Having said that I do think the frames have improved a bit over the past 2 updates (visual improvements too for me) It's funny how this becomes the norm though, we're all so used to frame drops that I only really noticed it after people constantly pointed it out and through watching PC gameplay.

I really do hold out some hope that with the switch version in the works they'll re-evaluate console performance all together. But hey on the plus side for the past few months (not sure which update did it, maybe 2.6) my ps4 hasn't sounded like it has breathing difficulties on booting up the game anymore 👍️

If i'm not mistaken, if you are using old hardware console's, and not the newer "pro" or "1x" then you are very likely to never play this game at a decent frame rate.

The newer boxes have hardware comprable to currentish gaming pc's, and so should have hope.

@Peanits Is this an accurate assumption? Or am I missing something?

edit: Oh and the killers console probably matters a bit more then yours.

Ah yes, the old argument of get a more expensive console just to play dbd at a somewhat decent quality while ignoring what @NoShinyPony and @Stevo mentioned which conflict with this. Sorry but it's really not acceptable to say just play PC or get a better console for 1 game to run decently (not even perfectly on pro/1x), while other games can run amazingly even on a base ps4/xbox. Sorry but just not a fan of this statement.

Dude even Epic, who makes UE, can't produce a game without a plethora of collision bugs. Hence why I bring up Unreal and Gears of War. These games were made by Epic and still have collision issues.

And I'm talking from experience using Unreal, not just playing the games. The engine is great for graphics but it has serious problems with collision.

Collision is collision. Doesn't matter if it's a melee game or shooter. Unreal has piss poor collision detection.

Go buy a PC then and stop whinging. Otherwise, get on with your life. Graphics arnt everything!

  • NoShinyPony
    NoShinyPony Member Posts: 4,570

@Tensor It's not so much about graphics. It's more about performance lags that mess up chases for you.

And playing on PC isn't necessary. Other games (even shooters) run amazingly on console, so I don't see a reason why DbD shouldn't run at least decently.

Don't worry, they will never find your hex totem. Trust me, that grass helps it blend in perfectly, like, how do you get such amazing hex totem placements?

    Sarcasm :)

However, on the topic here, I been using my XB1 X and it's been providing me great results but it wouldn't hurt for the developers to keep optimizing their game! :)

Indeed, runs just fine as survivor and a little bit less so as killer but still great on the 1X.

I can still remember launch day on the original Xbox back then what we had was terrible.

I'd love to see some sort of frame rate counter on the 1X version todayy with 2.7, I'd wager it's running between 50-60fps depending on killer/survivor/map.

@Kiskashi That wasn't my arguement. I never once suggested buying a new consol to play dbd.

I suggest ditching the outdated concept of a consol all together and spending the same amount of money on a gaming PC, that can do business tasks, and other things. Far better investment then a piece of hardware you can't upgrade wihtout buying a whole new one.

I'm just stating a fact. the regular xbox1 and ps4 don't have the hardware to run the game at a good framerate. Especially if the killer is using one. Maybe dedicated servers will help. We'll see.

  • NoShinyPony
    NoShinyPony Member Posts: 4,570

@SmokePotion Xbox and PS4 have a good enough hardware. Besides, I play on PS4 Pro and the performance isn't good here, either. Look at how other games run on consoles, even shooters. DbD's optimization simply isn't done well.

It actually runs really good on my Xbox one S. Well, it isn't 60 FPS, but it's an improvement.

I can finally play Nurse without those horrible frame drops.

If i turn off my systems built in capture card and not use certain cosmetics the game runs fairly well.

It's ######### 2019 how crazy is it that i have to jump through hoops to make the game playable.

Anyways, how good does DBD run on your platform?
