Because a forum is a place specifically for discussion. If you don't want to take the time to discuss something then this isn't the place for you.

If down vote does nothing to contribute to the conversation AND is just something for us to ignore... why keep it? And if you agree with me then why continue to argue with me?

Honestly, I liked the up votes because if someone disagreed with you, people would up vote the person who told you why so. Also, the reason why we never griped about having "LOL" is because they aren't as negative as down votes. In fact, I'll take a LOL over a down vote anytime tbh. 😂

Downvote promotes the 'echo chamber' effect.
And people with controversial opinions that need to be heard for the health, well being and future of the game gradually fall away at an exponential rate till all that's left are a few wild eyed fanatics and an entire community of Labradors all fighting over whose going to be the best lap dog to whatever the current regime eating away at the game from within is.
It's all very grim like that.

The reason why a downvote feature shouldn't exist is simply that most people in this community are unable to view things objectively / from different points of views.
If people are unable to question their own viewpoint and consider that another person's given examples on a topic might carry some truth after all (which does not always necessarily contradict all you stand for), a feature such as the aforementioned one is quite worthless.
This can also be applied to the upvotes. Although positivity about something obviously feels more empowering than negativity.

It's literally just a number that doesn't affect anything
Unless you check it on a profile it's even very hard to read due to the color and how small it is
It's extremely easy to just ignore it and not care about
However I still wish I could downvote my own posts
