Why do people like Pennywise so much?
Honest question, there seems to be a concerted push of enthusiasm from people to have him as the next killer and I just don't get it. This is a game about slashers and people running away from them, not some entity of allegedly cosmic evil that hides in the sewers and gets foiled by its own poor self-esteem.
I admit my take on the character is pretty reductionist, but I'm genuinely curious to know where this passion is coming from. What is it about Pennywise that people like so much? Why do they think he would be a good fit for this game?
This is a matter of opinion, so I'm not going to argue with people's reasons for liking him. We're all allowed to like whatever we like, but I'm genuinely having trouble wrapping my head around this one.
Help me understand.

Because Pennywise is an iconic horror icon from the 90s, you most likely didn't grow up with good slashers or watched those movies that helped the horror genre.

I'm not arguing that there were good horror movies during the 90s, just that I don't see how Pennywise fits into the canon of great slashers who defined the genre.
Scream is a great movie, for example, and it's like one long running Halloween reference.
I still don't understand exactly how Pennywise would fit into this game as a mechanical issue, as well. Can someone explain how his power (I'm not sure what it would be)could translate into something playable in the context of this game?
I'm not a fan of IT, but that doesn't mean I don't want to understand people who are.

Depends on how one defines slasher. Could be a serial killer situation (Scream), could be an obsessed murderer (Halloween), or even just someone protecting themself (Leatherface). SAW was a slasher because of the blades and blood aspect, and Jigsaw could be considered a serial killer who targets those who have done wrong.

I like Pig, but if I saw thread after thread of people calling for her to be put into the game, I would probably be equally curious as to why.
I take your point, though. I should clarify that, while I personally don't see how Pennywise fits into this game, I'm not bothered by the thought of him being in it. It's not me being 100% against the idea of him joining so much as me not understanding why so many people seem to like it.

Its not that hard .
The saw series helped push gore films into the mainstream and im pretty sure its easier to believe its Amanda chasing you in the DBD realm over some dying wheelchair bound old John kramer.

I tend to agree with IT not fitting into the game. Pennywise is an iconic character which I love but I can't see how they could make a power which does IT justice into the game.
IT plays with people's minds and causes fear using mental torture with the Pennywise persona using the clown as a way to lure kids in. Pennywise as the actual killer doesn't make any real sense.

Blades and blood can't be the definition of a slasher. Flipping samurai jack would be a slasher under those conditions.
Here's how I define slasher.
Horror movie, 1 or very few killer(s), takes people out 1 by 1 when they are separated (sometimes 2 or more at once, but those are the exception), the killer is the villain, there's a final "girl" (doesn't really have to be a girl), killer is human(or, could be replaced by a human)

There you go.You have Jigsaw, your killer, they usually do people 1 by 1 (though sometimes will have a group take themselves out), the killer is the villain (though that can be taken either way), usually the protagonist survives, being the "final girl", and Jigsaw (and Amanda) are both human.

Pennywise has a very specific MO. It's kinda hands-off, right? He acts through proxies and manipulation.

Literally clown is in DBD and I think he is the most lazy, boring, and lackluster killer yet we have him.

He's not a licensed killer, though. He's just a creepy, murderous clown. His backstory is basically bog standard serial killer. I actually like him quite a bit (as a character, hate playing him)because they made a killer clown that's totally unique from Pennywise.
My questions aren't about whether it's "okay" to have Pennywise around but more, like... what is it about him that makes him scary? How would he bring that fear into this game?
I know what makes Clown scary, he's a sick and disturbed weirdo who likes to cut people and animals up for fun. Textbook psychopath. Granted, he's a lot less scary in an actual match than he would be to encounter on a dark street late at night, but still. I get it.
He's a dude that wants to carve people up and suck on their digits. Pretty straightforward.

I guess going off this if the Dev's nailed a power where he gets stronger based on fear/and could manipulate his terror radius he could work for you.
I mean him getting stronger based on fear would be easy.
-we could do something where if survivors stay too long in his terror radius it could be similar to docs madness.
-the fear part is already covered where is survivor separate /get injured/ hooked/ or die they increase their fear.

John doesn't kill his victims, he puts them in situations where they kill themselves( it's stupid but hey... it's what the movie goes with)

Most important part, horror movie. I really don't think SAW is a horror movie. Body horror sure, but trying to gross you out is not the same as trying to scare you...you know?
Also John kramer is obviously superhuman, someone will probably find a videotape 100 years in the future with the details of a game he created and that's going on right them and there...XD

Because it's badass... Who cares if a game is around slashers anyway? They said themselves that there is nothing that they cannot get now because they have a big IP in-terms of license and popularity. Stop with that train of thought that it's based around "slashers" now. The developers themselves disproved that last week, and that's just that.
Pennywise would be cool and fun, it doesn't inherently need to be a "classic". You don't seem to know the reason why they pulled Stranger Things into the picture, right? Because S3 came out and their IP is huge. Furthermore, the next chapter is set to be released around December.... exactly when the Blu-ray edition of IT 2 comes out.

I'm not trying to tell anyone that Pennywise shouldn't be put in this game, I want to know why people think he should be put into this game. Like, why would he make a good killer? What would his toolkit look like? How would he put survivors on edge?
It's not "prove yourself to me so I can judge you, peasant!" but "help me understand your passion so I can see it for myself".

Why mention slashers then? It just makes your post much more confusing, but I already really answered your question. Big IP, Blu-ray comes out in December, second question is because "slashers" aren't so apparent and other entities aren't as obsolete anymore and his toolkit.... it would just be switching from killer to killer or they make it so Pennywise activates every survivors biggest fear.
He would put them on edge because it's about making you go insane, having to face your fears and if you don't beat your fears, you die. He would be similar to the Doctor in a sense, mid-tier.

I mentioned slashers and people running away from them because those are the roots of this game. Leatherface was chasing people around and putting them on meathooks 40 years ago. There is almost no difference between that guy in the original movie and in this game, right down to the flailing chainsaw tantrums when he messes up.
Pennywise is a very cerebral, manipulative kind of killer. He doesn't chase his victims, they come to him. We don't really have any of those. It's a question of MO. Saying he'd be like Doctor is a decent start that helps me visualize what an actual match with him would look like.

Considering the last two, 66% of killers are from slashers.

Personally I dont want Pennywise, for the soul reason of his name. Clown is already taken, and I'm afraid the license holders will request his name not have a "The" in front of it and his name be either It or Pennywise. But even if a "the" was in front of it, The Pennywise and The It are still stupid names.

Aggressive? I'm questioning his post because I was confused before he told me. There was nothing else than a simple discussion, he was nice about it, I was how I am with it. I had a idea for Pennywise power, maybe it's to much programming. 🤷♂️
But anyway what if each survivor's had a legitimate fear of something, say if Claudette was a afraid of spider's and she ran into a balloon it explodes, and covers her with blood and the blood would eventually wear off but during when she's trying to preform actions like unhooking, fixing generators the spider's would manifest crawling on the gens and on her hands but this would slow her progression and actions down drastically
Say if Dwight was afraid of being alone and if he was covered in blood or in the face, he wouldn't be able to see other survivors until it wore off like they could literally be standing in front of him but because his fear is active they would be totally invisible to him and ect.

Oh, sorry. Lost track of this thread. Catching up now.
That does sound like a lot of development work, far more than we're ever likely to see for a single killer, but I like the general idea. I'm not sure about balloons, and it feels a bit similar to Hag in certain respects, but it does capture a feeling of deception and manipulation.
Coding limitations aside, it feels like something Pennywise would do so it's a step in the right direction. And it actually made me think of something like trapped or tricked chests. A survivor sees a chest, goes rooting around in it for loot, gets bitten by it or something. Lots of blood, a scream (for noise notification), then wounded.
So it's helping me to imagine the possibilities in more tangible terms, which is what I was after. Good share.

Hmm... Resident Evil 2 is one of the greatest survival horror games of all time, so it's difficult for me to say which end of the equation is doing the heavy lifting here.
I'll concede that it's a very menacing incarnation of Pennywise, though.

Its mostly due to the re-makes being so popular. Most people who play this game aren’t even that into horror, or they just know more mainstream stuff. Which now Pennywise is more mainstream. If it were the Tim curry version I’d be more open to it but over all I really don’t want another clown.

He doesn't fit the lore at all. He's a cosmic entity that hunted human children to feed on their fear. The reason he was beaten is because the adult versions of the kids realized his strength was dependent on their fear.
The survivors in dbd are all adults, and the entity that created the facade of pennywise doesn't get the same benefits it did in dbd, and one could argue the Entity in Dbd could have snatched "Pennywise" but why?
The Demogorgon at least is some lapdog trained to do the entity bidding. Unable to fight of the whim of an all powerful being, it now works under its thrall.
But pennywise or "The Deadlights" is a being that never actually existed in the confines of our known universe. The Clown you see is just a projection. Why would the deadlights allow the entity to snatch it's projection? It's not a human that can be molded like all other killers, not is it a weaker lesser being like the Demogorgon.
You may argue that it doesn't matter it's just a game just let them add Chucky, xenomorphs, and blah blah but the problem.with that is the game is losing the heart of it's creation with all these licenses. It's becoming a mortal combat style mashup with little to no cohesion.
Who knows. If he is added. I hope at least it's because The Deadlights is desperate not to have it's influence severed so it allowed its avatar to be taken.
But again. This means he will be much weaker and forced to follow rules, just like how every killer is confined to rules the entity has.
It just seems like all the tampering and changing will lead to an inert character that could been better as an original instead of pennywise.
I just miss the original characters. They might be inspired by slashers and ghouls like Jason and the like, but at least they were freshly designed characters.

He doesn't seem so powerful in the movies tbh yeah he can manipulate minds and create illusions but at the same time it doesn't say it can create new life except reproduce or it can't go back to where it originated from I think its power is domain by the realm it precedes so entering humanity realm it already became weaker

Because most people just want more killers in the game and don't give a damn about the game's balance. Remember: most are just casuals/fanatics playing the game at rank 15 that don't even know about the gen Rush and all this kind of dirt stuff
