Can somebody please explain why Surv’s and Killers can’t get along?

What is the issue? We’re all on the same game loving and disliking it at times. I genuinely don’t understand the feud and I’d like to be informed. Please keep the conversation informative and educational for people who want to know like myself. No negative arguments, no toxicity, just reasoning. Thank you. 💜

    Well then...

I should’ve just guessed if this was the reason.. I feel like an idiot. Thanks anyway.

Yeah Peanits said it well. While some members play both sides. Even more prefer one over the other. I personally play killer only, ive played survivor once and probably wont ever play survivor.

I just enjoy being killer and not being dependant on a team and also cant handle the anxiety of my poor game play being the teams downfall.

If i played both some scenarios probably wouldnt feel/seem as unfair as they sometimes do. But thats a choice I personally choose to make.

At the end of the day, it comes down to people being unable to have a civil conversation without attacking one side or the other.

Because the first few years of the game saw the devs treat killers as unimportant while catering to the larger survivor population, up until they started having a shortage of killer players. The entire time this was occurring survivors en masse gloated and relished rubbing it in. It got so bad at one point the lead dev told killers to go play another game until the community manager enlightened him to that being a horrible thing to suggest for their games functionality.

It pretty much boils down to tribalism. If more people would give the other role a solid try you would hardly see it. You see a lot of excuses like it's too easy when they only played the other side at the low ranks where most people still don't know how the game even works. You really shouldn't even be arguing a double sided issue when you've only closely examined one side.

One side mains Survivor, the other mains Killer. Naturally they'll be at each others throats because they're common enemies with different goals.

But that's what usually stems toxicity when that is a mechanic in a game. One side will hate the other, and constantly call them out on faults and other things. It's good to keep an open mind for both sides for the sake of balance and sportsman ship, and it will also help you understand them both as well.

It's what I do, because I like a fair and fun game for both sides when I'm a Killer, and when i'm a Survivor i'd hope for the same thing from the Killer as well. It's sort of a... "Walk a mile in their shoes" mentality, which goes a long way.

Well i just had one of the most fun matches i've had yet. I killed two survivors and farmed points with the other two by allowing them to stun me, heal each other and allowing them to escape. Great sports and for the first time ever, polite PSN messages saying thank you! That's my good deed for the day!

Couldn't have said it better, too much bias one way or the other. I hope a larger amount of people play both sides to a higher level.

    I don't like this response.

"As part of the Community Manager team I can say we are aware of this issue and it is something we are working on."

Is something you could have said, instead of this weak "Well there's nothing we can do about this.". To me this issue is clearly one that the Community Management team should be working on, but you make it sound like it's not something you care about.

I play both, but Killer more. Like maybe 70/30. When I play S and get tunnelled, I get why that's frustrating. But as Killer, I sometimes tunnel because it's the right play. Someone is hook rescued; by default, I go after the one who unhooked. But if they vanish, and the unhookee is visible, I'm just not going to waste time trying not to tunnel by finding the missing unhooker.

He was answering the question. In games both 2 sides it will always be an "us vs them" scenario. Doesnt mean they arent trying to balance issues on both sides or minimalize it. Because one side will always feel that "this change was made to make things easy for the other side"

And no not everyone feels this way. But as stated most people play one or the other. Not both. Even when playing both sides, some favor another. Ive never touched survivors aside from 1 game. But im also mature enough to not take things to heart when it comes why survivors think xyz is unfair or why killers thibk xyz is unfair. Not everyone can take that stance and thats where alot of the back and forth comes into play on these forums.

    "Us vs them"

I started playing the game almost 11 months ago and mostly played survivor (only killer to get rituals) because it's just a preference. I'm a horror movie addict and one of my favorite aspects is the survivor fighting for his/her life. Anyway, I started playing killer more often so I could see what the other side goes through and yes I did encounter a good deal of toxicity despite not tunneling, camping, etc. and overall being a nice killer. I also try my best not to be toxic as a survivor (no endless pallet looping, no flash lighting, no body blocking & esp. no teabagging). Despite that fact, a lot of killers still tunnel, camp and slug me. It happens much too often and thus it's hard not to feel jaded by this. I have no idea what it's like on the PC, but it's cutthroat on the PS4. I play solo, but I'm trying to get more friends to play again so I can get into SWF groups. Otherwise, I know I'll end up leaving the game.

I play both killer and survivor on PS4. We have a bunch of us (8-10) that play together and it's usually mixed group with killers also playing but on chat to just chill laugh and have fun.

We have "meme nights" where we just send funny memes when lobbies are long, "joke night" the best jokes win but in the end everyone laughs... We have word of the day, we are multi-lingual group so inevitably there's a @&#- that comes out and then everyone tries using it without know what it means (omg I die laughing sometimes)... just stupid fun... Like playing hot potato with an item - one person takes in an item and anytime you pass another survivor they have to take it from you. The goal is to survive without the item.

We range in age from adult to 50+ so there's a lot to talk about. We also range in ranks from 1-20 on both sides (90% of us play both sides) and aren't sweaty try hards. There is also a variety of time zones so someone is usually always on.

You're more than welcome to join us anytime 😊👍 I'm not sure how to send my info without giving the world my Psn... But if you wanna good laugh lemme know and I'll figure something out.

Because you get pressed into "us vs. them", even if you have the best intentions in the forums and I make here clear a difference to the forums and the game.

While I have met in the game survivors and killers with whom you had a friendly atmosphere, here in the forums you get often confronted with ideas and views that let you no other choice as to choose the site you like and understand more.

That is at least, how I see it and I know, my point of view will never solve the problem^^. But sometimes it is just as it is.

@FireHazard I hear you, and that is very much a typical gamer mentality. Especially in a competitive (read: PvP) game.

And it isn't even just asymmetrical as @Peanits stated, though that does play some factor. Look at Overwatch. There, you have heroes designed to specifically be stronger against other heroes. Shield Tanks are crying for Doomfist to be nerfed (their weakness), Doomfist mains tell the tanks to "git gud." Or you have Supports at the throats of most Reaper or Tracer mains. And so forth.

People always want their side (or hero) to be stronger. Too many gamers don't look at the bigger picture of what's good or healthy for a game. They just want the "W" and damn near feel entitled to it. I saw enough of it in my own game design days.

I played mostly killer here, but always tried to see the survivor side of things. That's why I didn't camp or tunnel unless absolutely needed to get something . . . anything . . . done in a match so I didn't leave completely empty handed.

Playing Survivor during the Bloodhunt because queues are nearly instant for me, and killes are taking 15-20 minutes (so more average BP per hour overall). I've already been tunneled a few times, and camped once. On the camper, I just suicided on first hook. He wouldn't leave the area for whatever reason even when he found no one else around the hook. So, he lost BP on me overall. Right now, he'll wait a while for his next match. I was in my next match about 30 seconds later.

    I lose nothing.

(Sidebar: In that match only two gens got done, and they were the two I did. So, I didn't feel bad about leaving the other three randoms behind. I don't know what they were doing, but it sure as hell wasn't generators.)

I really wish people would stop thinking it's one side against the other. It's a really enjoyable game but some people only play this game. I had to take a long 6 month break and when I came back I realized that it's so dumb to be one sided in this game. Both sides offer great advice but the divide now is too large. Hell, a lot of people suggest the same things from both sides but when someone mentions that they're a killer or survivor "main" their opinions get thrown out the window. If more people understood how decent both sides of the fence are then maybe we can all band together and try to get the devs to understand what to actually fix, the game would be in pristine condition. As is, with every patch, there is constant complaining from both sides.

  • Kilmeran
    Kilmeran Member Posts: 3,142

@Captain_Spaulding Well said. And as I said above, I've been playing survivor for the bloodhunt due to near instant queues for me and therefore more BP per Hour on average.

And so far, I've been enjoying it. People are right, it is a lot less stressful than Killer. I've never been one side over the other as far as game design and such, but as far as play time, I think I am definitely going to be much more of a 50/50 player going forward.

  • Mister_Holdout
    Mister_Holdout Member Posts: 3,144

I have a pretty good understanding of this topic as someone who plays both sides a lot (I still view myself as a killer main tho):

For one thing, DbD does have a long history of balance issues. Killer mains are right in their assertion that the game is generally survivor-sided. This imbalance is mostly due to map design however. Killers without strong anti loop abilities will have a difficult time against genuinely good survivors.

Many survivor mains don't want a relatively even playing field, so they constantly argue with killer mains about balance (even though the survivor mains are misguided much of the time).

That said, both sides can be unreasonable over anything really. There are killer mains who want to protect their overpowered setups (and of course that's wrong too). Or, some killer mains get upset over the smallest nerf to something. Point is, both sides can be petty and misguided. But killers do a legitimate claim when they say DbD is not balanced.

I think if the devs just fixed map design, everything would cool down a lot more. The survivor mains won't be happy, but now everything will be relatively even. The survivor or killer mains won't have much reason to belly ache then.

  • MemberBerry
    MemberBerry Member Posts: 394

Because DBD is one game on consoles, another game on NA PC, and a completely different game on EU/AU PC. Console players are mostly survivor mains who are extremely casual, NA PC is more equal, a mix of casuals with a bit of tryhards, and EU/AU PC is mostly tryhards who play both sides, who are a part of those 3 minute genrush videos.

It's more about platforms and regions than it is about killer vs survivor. I mean, take a look at Monto's videos vs TrU3Ta1ent's videos, you'll see the difference between NA and EU survivors.

  • slingshotsurvivor
    slingshotsurvivor Member Posts: 943

@MemberBerry oh I agree 100% I've been saying console is a completely different game all together.

You've made an excellent point and I really hope the Devs see this. Your example is spot on as well!

It's not in the tutorial is why......jk

Jokes aside killers and survivors are both entitled and clash in the middle about how this and that should be done. The few who play 50/50 or close to it get drowned out by the majority of either side.

Hang on, this is an interesting claim that I have always been curious about. DO most people, based on your data, mostly stick to one role or the other? I play a mix of both survivor and killer, and I don't consider either one my "main." I have always assumed that most players are the same way, and that survivor or killer mains are outliers.

    Am I wrong here?

  • oxygen
    oxygen Member Posts: 3,323

Some competitive "animosity" can be healthy, as it is a game about beating someone that wants to beat you afterall. Obviously while you're in a match it is you vs them, and that's fine as that is very accurate.

But some people take it from a competitive mindset to straight up rabid tribalism that they take out of the game, complete with cheering anything that's negative for the "other tribe" just because "bad happen to them = good" or something. Those people seriously need to take a break from PVP games entirely if you ask me.

The main reason I believe is that people from each side refuse to play the other side unless they have daily rituals

If more people decided to play the opposite side more often there would be much less fighting

At least that's how it went for me

I started out as a survivor main, only playing killer on rare occasions. At the time I was so toxic, BMing was basically all I did, I never even considered the fact that the killer was another human being

Then one day the Wraith cube came out, so I decided to play him more, since he was one of my favourite characters, by design mostly. For some months I became a killer main, I learned how to play most killers, I reached rank 1, I finally understood how killers must have felt when I was a toxic waffle

Now I play both sides, I've never been better at each before. Just playing to have fun, enjoying the game, having fun annoying toxic people when they get mad at me

If people played both sides more there would be less rivalry between the factions

Honestly, one of the biggest reason the forums are so divided is because BHVR refuses to mitigate it. They limit personal attacks, but allow silly posts about "Survivor Mains this" "Killer Mains that" and it only further divides the community. If you are someone who plays both, but favors one side due to personal reasons, you see it much more clearly.

If BHVR deleted the posts that focus ONLY on accusing one side or the other of childish/toxic behavior, I think much of the divide would fade to a tolerable level. Just look through the forums and you will see scores of pointless posts that do nothing but demonize the other side. Those are allowed to grow and fester.

I'm a killer main, I love playing the killer. I love that I get to play a monster, I love that my job is hunting people. I enjoy tracking scratch marks, listening for sounds, searching for hidden survivors. The thrill of the chase is very real for me.

I can't play survivor at all, I don't enjoy it, I don't like letting other people down. Maybe one day that will change, but I enjoy playing killer so much that it seems unlikely. I'm willing to put up with the stress of the role because the payoff is oh so sweet.

But I need survivors. A killer without survivors is just a bored, sad dude. So I feel it behooves me to empathize with them to at least some degree. I also try to watch survivor streamers, read survivor guides, and get into their heads as much as possible.

I like to be even-handed. I do take special delight in murdering players who piss me off, but I also enjoy giving the exit to players who really fight for their lives without being toxic.

For me, the biggest turning point in my relationship to survivors was the realization that I get paid per hook. BBQ really drove this point home. Once I hook everyone at least once, I get pretty chill. I'll still kill a whole team if they let me, but I'm not sweaty or salty about it.

  • Xboned
    Xboned Member Posts: 461

I save all the messages I get from survivors on XBL and the majority of them are friendly. There's definitely some salt in there, even one time an accusation of hacking when I played Myers (not my fault you don't pay attention, ma'am), but most of it is "gg" and the like, the occasional "da homie" or "you're the best" when I give someone the hatch.

Personally I don’t think the game being asymmetrical has created this “feud”. The game didn’t make you think someone is being “toxic” because they HAD to play in a way that you didn’t particularly enjoy.

I personally think the “feud” comes from your own attitude towards the people you play with and against. So many times I have been frustrated with my own team and I try to make it a teaching moment by pointing out what we could have done better and I am met with “stop being so salty” by both the killer and the bad players. Instead they are more interested in calling each other names. Which just goes to show that any type of criticism post match is deemed as a bad thing.

This is the same attitude I see on the forums sometimes.

Like @Peanits said, if you only (or mostly) play one side, you begin to think that certain things are op, because you can't handle them. No idea how often i screamed: "Dead Hard is op af nerf this sh*t finally geeez!" And it's difficult to see which things are really too strong or too weak, also depending on which rank they are used.

I don't mind the terms themselves as obviously people can use them to describe themselves, and everyone can have fun poking at obvious stereotypes at times.

But any posts that basically use "you're a <role> main" as an actual arguement should a lot of the time automatically be considered trolling if you ask me. When that's the core message of a post it usually doesn't add anything of value to the conversation other than someone screaming into the void at someone that dares to disagree with them.

Maybe people should learn to be decent so developers wouldn't have to reduce capabilities on both ends. Ever thought of that instead, Peanits really isn't saying they aren't doing anything, but you just be nice instead of making yourself into an ass

  • Because the "mains" fail to realize that its not about them and both sides need each other for the game to survive

Interestingly enough, even though I've spent far more time playing Killer than Survivor (because I am mostly a SOLO Player) throughout my history of playing DBD I have 100% Consistently always managed to rank up BOTH my Survivor and Killer at the exact same time to the same ranks haha.. I'm not trying to do this at all, but for me BOTH Survivor and Killer are always identical ranks for some reason, maybe 1 rank apart at the most, sort of interesting how that happens I guess lol

I would have to agree that it has to do with only playing one side. I typically play both. One week I pick a survivor to level up, the next week, I pick a killer to level up. More often than not since I'm still basically learning, I play pretty chill and I'm more observant than anything. Being that I play survivor solo, I can't communicate with my team and since I play on console, I don't get many tips after a match so I don't know if I'm being toxic as much as just making dumb mistakes (there are plenty) when killers tunnel me or my team leaves me hooked. For both sides, I honestly just play in a way that maximizes fun. Usually when I play killer, all I concern myself with is rituals and once I get my ritual done, I back off a bit. I've even been known to carry a survivor or 2 to the exit or hatch if they put up a good fight and made things fun. I have yet to run into any "toxic" killers other than those that camp on occasion and usually it turns out that they're new anyway. I actually encounter more survivors that will let me die or piss off the killers than I do killers that are being out of pocket. Maybe I'm too chill though. I dunno.

  • That's Simple. Because its BHVR, they don't know how to make this game fair and fun and decides to fix things every two years or so and waste money and resources on cosmetics, its "Being descent devs vs money money money money"
