Best horror movies that no one talks about?
Hi, I'm looking for some new horror movies to check out. Of course I am familiar with the 'classics' but was wondering if anyone had any suggestions that maybe aren't as well known? I'm not talking like 'your 3rd cousins art project which he entered into a film festival this one time' level of unknown but you know, something maybe I hadn't heard of. My recommendation to anyone else who might ask me the same question would be The Void (2016). I thought it was a pretty cool film which I hadn't heard much about before I saw it.
Any suggestions are welcome, I'll let you know if I check yours out ;)

It's not new...1976 "Burnt Offerings". Good story, creepy, not a gore fest but it's worth watching imo. It's hard to find so best of luck 👍

So many good ones now! With the interwebs and so many streaming platforms....I do t have time to watch them all.
IGN Up at Noon just made a list of 6 good ones and I watched DownRange.....NOT your typical scary movie!
There are so many sub-genres in horror now that it depends what I am in the mood for.
About the only thing I can't stand is the Stephen King garbage, mostly because I have likely read the original story his crap is based on and it's FAR better.
Then again, at this point, is anything really original?
I have been liking the Hulu original movies (Into the Dark) lately...about 50/50 when they are not cramming liberal media politics down my throat, they are really good!
Then there's the horror/comedy and blatant over-the-top gore...so stupid yet so intelligently done! Cooties comes to mind.
I like watching classics and the remakes, which still hold up: My Bloody Valentine and I spit on your grave
For mainstrean, I liked Midnight Meat Train (Bradley Cooper might put some folks off, but don't let it! It's good!) And Hereditary just sticks with me. The more I watch it, the more insane and creepy/awful it seems!
For series, AHS is always good and seems to always do something unexpected and I wish they would have continued Penny Dreadful.
VHS series is disturbing and so is that one about the band who plays at the Nazi/skinhead clubhouse/camp (I can't remember the name but I think it was netflix).
I really liked Hush...watched it twice.
Hunger was creepy with a "yeah right..." Ending but otherwise really good.

When I first heard the premise of this movie (A Demon that travels via sex) I thought it sounded like it was going to be a comically bad horror film, I was wrong.
While this movie isn't in my top list of favorites it is easily one of the few horror film that actually surprised me in a good way.

Its actually a reboot but it was good IMO I was a kid when I saw it but it creeped the hell out of me and that's what's about, a good horror film should

To respond to a few of the suggestions in this thread, I think that people talk plenty about It Follows, The Descent, Dog Soldiers and 30 Days of Night. They're some of the more well-known modern horrors. The Descent probably gets passed over a little bit because of the disaster of a sequel. I thought it was great; wasn't a fan of either Dog Soldiers or 30 Days of Night though.
House of Wax remake, My Bloody Valentine, Quarantine, and Hush were all good movies imo. Cooties is just a funny premise with very weak delivery... again, imo. Cloverfield is the classic that unfortunately also begot the neverending plague of terrible found footage films that we still haven't seen the end of. @Attackfrog I might have to give MMT a try then, because I have skipped over it every time I've seen it playing for the exact reason that I don't like Cooper. :P
While none of these are my favorites, some good horror movies that surprised me since I hadn't heard much about them are...

I get this one confused with Waxworks...the older version. I always like that one and thought it was so scary as a kid.

Not terribly old, and probably people have heard of them too are Dr. Giggles (was terrified of doctors as a kid) and The Ice Cream Man (which now has a Riff Tracks version which is actually better than the stand alone movie ha!).
And Jack Frost (not the kids movie)...VERY terrible but one of those you can just watch again and again...especially if under the influence lol! I believe it also has a Riff Trax version but I haven't seen it ...only the original

Cabin in the woods.
It's a love/hate letter to horror movies, it's not that scary but it's dark it's got good jokes in some parts and it's got some amazing scenes/kills.

"Sleep Tight" , though one could argue it isn't strictly a horror movie but rather a psychological thriller with slight horror elements.
"The Burning" is another favourite of mine I hardly ever hear people talk about.
Been a while since I saw them but I remember the "Laid to Rest" movies for beging highly enjoyable slasher-flics.

"The Collector"
Guy breaks into a house to steal a valuable from people he'd done handyman work for before (to pay off his wife's debts to a loan shark. He finds that someone else already broke into the house and booby trapped the entire thing with the family trapped inside.
"Leprechaun"
Less secretly good and more bad in all the best cheesy ways ways
Leprechaun comes for its gold
"Tremors"
Excluding the name they eventually give the creatures that cause the tremors this is a great horror movie about things that lurk under ground and hunt based on sound (The movies get weirder with every sequel. Though that's normal in horror)

"Mirrors"
Thar be demons in those mirrors
^ I was a child when I saw it, so it's actually probably not as scary as I remember. I just know this movie, along with the bloody mary movie that released 2 years prior left me intensely afraid of mirrors as a kid.
I still get wary around them and I'm 21 now. (Note: Both movies have one of those nasty neck snapping scenes where the bone pokes up but the skin stays in place. I remember those vividly. I think those were the scenes that broke me at 8 and 10)
