Who knows? It's unclear whether they're fed or given rest as well... it's a lovecraftian horror. Maybe they are deprived of it to keep them on edge. After all, it's not like dreams can save them either.
I doubt we'll get an answer on any of these points.

The generator was fully repaired... what was the man doing? A challenge perhaps...
