Thoughts On Legacy Cosmetics

Under the Developer Update for November, not_Queen has provided us with the reasons behind why certain types of cosmetics continue to remain exclusive. And for me, most of the answers provided make sense. For most of them, it's about contractual obligations made with a third party. 'Bloodletting' cosmetics issue involve payment from customers. Behaviour's answers make sense.

The only exception is the reasoning she provided for the Legacy exclusivity. What she stated is:

Unless we are able to identify every player that lost legacy, it will not come back. At the moment, we are still unable to identify the players that lost their legacy, therefore, we are not refunding or unlocking legacy.

Unlike the other cosmetics mentioned above in which Behaviour can't just give them out to everyone, to me, it sounds like Behaviour is choosing not to give them out to everyone. And why is that?

Maybe it's just me, but the explanation that not_Queen offered doesn't seem to make much sense. If you (Behaviour) is able to identify every player that lost their Legacy cosmetics, this wouldn't even be an issue in the first place, would it? You would simply return the Legacy cosmetics to those players. The problem is, because of the way Behaviour chose to code the game, it's not possible. So what then? To me, the choice seems to be a.) continue to withhold the cosmetics from people who had earned, but lost them because of how Behaviour chose to program their game, or b.) give the cosmetics to everyone so that they are at least also returning them to those who had earned them, at the price of Behaviour having to go back on their words about its 'exclusivity.'

From my understanding of the situation, people who lost their Legacy cosmetics were not at fault, correct? Isn't Behaviour solely to blame for the loss of the players' cosmetics? If that is the case, then shouldn't it be the company's responsibility to return them to their rightful owners however means possible?

To me, it sounds like from Behaviour's perspective, it is much worse to give these exclusive cosmetics to people who did not earn them than to give back these cosmetics to the people who had actually earned, but lost them due to Behaviour's negligence. Is that really where their priority should lie? Is this how they should take responsibility as a company of the problem that they themselves created?

On the other hand, although I would like to say that if Legacy is given to everyone so that they are returned to all the players who had lost them due to Behaviour's mishap, the DBD Community would be understanding and empathetic of the situation despite them being not so 'special' anymore... but looking at the forums, I really can't, huh.

Are people still on this? Literally there are dozens of threads on this already.

They have already made a statement as to why some cosmetics but not others.

As far as Legacy, those players literally put in hundreds of hours for that (event exclusives took maaaybe 20 hours tops) in the game's early stages when nobody knew what its future would hold. They were basically the pioneers and "investors" that made the game what it is, provided early statistics, and helped the devs figure out what direction to take next. Let them have their thing.

Convention cosmetics? Given away for free. It's not the devs' fault that people slapped them on eBay the second they realized how rare they were. The prices have only been going up more and more the past months, and it's outrageous. About a year ago I heard of someone buying Golden Feng for around $250. Then a little later I heard $500. I know No0b3 spent $800 just a few months ago. It's ridiculous and predatory, and the devs are making those codesellers obsolete. No, they won't charge money for them, because the backlash would be insane (because they can't win either way.) It was free in the beginning when they were giving codes out, so they can't, in good conscience, turn around now to shut down the codesellers and then put their own price tag on it. Though I would understand if they did, just saying out loud sounds scummy.

Enjoy the fact that you had exclusive access for this amount of time. And honestly let's be real, are you even wearing those event cosmetics on a regular basis? I doubt it, because I never see anyone wearing them. So what it comes down to is just quietly admiring them in your inventory. And if that's the case, nobody besides you knows you earned them anyway, so what does it matter at that point?

This is honestly the only community I've ever seen that finds something to complain about every step of the way, even when receiving free cosmetics. Holy moly. Y'all need to move on. Get some fresh air. Your life will go on, I promise.

Mods, I hope we can start deleting or moving some of these threads. I'm a very patient and understanding person, but even I'm getting frustrated by people talking about literally nothing else.

    @ACEvHEARTS

Did you actually read the thread? It seems like you are ranting on about a completely different topic.

Probably not, and in fairness, many of us are sick of seeing these kinds of threads by now.

Fair enough. But personally, when I'm tired of certain types of threads, I simply skip over them.

I'm sort of addressing everybody at this point, and I apologize that you ended up being the one post that just so happened to result in me typing a response.

You may have only touched on one side of the issue, but there are just so many complaints about the situation from so many various angles that it's kind of all landing in the same pool.

My primary point is that nobody in this situation is entitled to anything. Nobody is entitled to receiving an exclusive, and nobody is entitled to keeping their exclusives to themselves. It's up to the devs and they've made up their minds and addressed the individual "what about"s and "what ifs". There's just no need to keep creating dozens of threads as if one of you is going to post the one thread that will magically change their decision. They've touched on all of the angles and the subject should just be dropped.

It's hard to skip over when people keep crying over actual free stuff or having to share (not you, in this case.) So many people just honestly sound like a bunch of children. Devs are doing something nice and not looking for a profit. I just feel like it should be thanked, but the angry mobs are louder than the grateful voices right now.

Can you explain to me why some people who worked for the Legacy cosmetics should continue to have them, and why some people who worked for them in the same exact manner shouldn't have them? And more importantly, can you point me in the direction where Behaviour has specifically addressed this issue?

The reason why I created this particular thread is because I personally felt that Behaviour's explanation about this particular cosmetic was a bit unsatisfactory in my opinion, and was hoping that they would expand on how they reached that particular decision.

Did my thread come of as childish or angry? (Granted, it probably doesn't sound 'grateful' either, but that's probably because I don't have much interest in cosmetics overall.) My only concerns were with players who had 'earned' the cosmetics and still have not received them after many years. To me, there is a better way for a professional company to address that particular issue.

They don't have a great way to track lost Legacy, unfortunately. I'm sure if they are able to figure it out someday, they will be more than willing to solve the issue. I, for one, hope that they do. I feel bad for folks who earned Legacy pieces and lost them in progress bugs. I definitely agree with you on that one.

As for you coming off as childish, you really didn't. I do apologize for jumping on the post. Yours was more reasonable than a lot of other ones. I'm just feeling so frustrated about lots of folks being ungrateful.

Peanits and not_Queen made an addendum to the Dev Update post and were around the forums answering a lot of questions and concerns today with a little more elaboration. Here's the added part from the Dev Update.

    Why unlock the event cosmetics?

Unfortunately the way these event cosmetics were stored made it possible for certain players to lose them at random. They would need to be returned manually, but doing so ran the risk of causing further loss of progress.

Why are these cosmetics not in the list?

    BLOODLETTING

Bloodletting was a promotion for ordering items on our first merchandise store (the old one) for a limited period of time. Since players payed for it, we do not want to unlock the Bloodletting shirt for all.

    LEGACY

Unless we are able to identify every player that lost legacy, it will not come back. At the moment, we are still unable to identify the players that lost their legacy, therefore, we are not refunding or unlocking legacy.

    TWITCH / KINGKONGTV / PANDATV

As per our arrangement with these partners, we cannot distribute the cosmetics to all players.

    SWITCH TRAPPER

As per our arrangement with the platform, the cosmetic is to remain exclusive to the platform.

    L4D

As per our arrangement with the platform, the promotion is effective on Steam only.

    STREAMER COSMETICS

As per our arrangements with streamers, they will not be distributed and unlocked for every player. You can get a large number of streamer exclusives in the Charity Case.

I believe the reason why this is such a thorny issue for Behaviour is because there isn't any reliable way to demonstrate that a player has earned the Legacy cosmetics - and that's why even with 'screenshots' like you mentioned or evidence from achievements and trophies, the developers are not just giving them back. (Anyone - Please correct me if I am wrong about this.)

Like you, I do wish that they can figure out a way for those particular players to retrieve their cosmetics too, but given how it seems like more than couple of years have passed, I am very much doubting that it is even possible. And given how that is the state of the matter, that's why I created this thread - to discuss the alternatives that are available in front of us now. What is the better option, given how there is no clean way to handle it?

Thanks for the not_Queen's addendum, but I had actually already read them. Because I personally felt that it didn't adequately address the Legacy issue, I thought I could try to pry some information of the actual thought process behind their current decision on that particular matter.
