Why did people freak out about Tome II?

It really isn't all that challenging if your somewhat well versed in the game. Several are essentially 'just play the objective'. Getting a grab takes a few games if you are unlucky and the Dark Sense challenge where you must compete 3 generators over also over hyped. I completed it in my first attempt.

If people are freaked out by this stuff, then they have no chance of getting Tome IV done.

But, maybe there was just come confusion about the requirements of the harder challenges.

Dark Sense challenge; you do not need to complete 3 generators by yourself 0-100%. Just bring a good tool box and play a little immersed with perks that help you before the exit gates are done/do generators.

Grab challenge; grabbing off generators, totems, out of lockers, exit gates, pallets, and windows will complete the challenge. You'll most likely get someone out of a locker, pallet, or window. The last two can happen when a survivor is injured and either slow vaulting or slow sprint vaulting when you are very close.

Edit: It should also be noted some of the harder challenges are not required to be done to complete the Tome. You only need to follow one track and there are many challenges that do not lead directly to the Tome Epilogue.

I wouldn't even say you need to be well versed. I'm not a seasoned player (typically between rank 12-15) and I didnt have too much of an issue.

Granted...I got lucky with the flashlight one where the killer let me do it.

That was the hardest one for me. I blew through 4 flashlights before I managed to get 2 blinds. But still, the tome wasn't hard enough to complain about. It's just too many spoiled brats want things handed to them on a silver platter rather than have a challenge be challenging.

Ya they weren't saves. But my aim with flashlights is horrible. From what I read on here playing on ps4 is probably adding to that.

Hopefully I run into a friendly myers again when it comes up again.

I'm actually starting to wonder about the next tome, and if it will be Jake or dwight.

I got the Flashlight tome 2 achievement by dropping both the pallets at Gideon's basement. Flashed when killer was breaking them.

It's not so much Tome 2...it's the prospect of things to come. 3 and especially 4 are no doubt going to include some frustrating challenges.

I wasn't aware that people 'freaked' over Tome II. There was a glitch that let people see Tome IV early, though, and it is a bit ridiculous/promotes toxic play.

There were definately several posts I remember reading about it. Basically, it boiled down to the following "I cant save 15 survivors in one match that's too grindy" and "complete this challenge in one match? That's too hard"

  • Nobsyde

Remember this: if when you aim your flashlight the cone of light is shrinking, it means you are aiming correctly for the blind.

This helps greatly to understand if the aim and distance are enough on point.

Just generic whiners? Those happen anytime something happens in this game, or if the developers so much as sigh :P

I believe you that the whiners exist. Just not that it qualifies as something worth paying attention to when there's issues that more of the base agree on.

Dark Sense Challenge you are 100% wrong. You got extremely lucky. There is a bug where if multiple survivors are working on the same challenge each survivor can progress the other's challenges. So if you didn't complete 3 generators from start to finish then other survivors were working on the same challenge. If the challenges weren't bugged then this one would be a nightmare for most players. I hope they don't fix this particular bug, because it sucked.

This...we went from being complete our challenges in 1-2 games to needing 10. Unless you sit there doing challenges instead of playing the game.

Which is toxic for the game.

They really need to rethink their design for it. Shouldnt be encouraging players to play selfishly. They should be simple, and done just for playing the game.

Second, personally, look at the Apex Legends game pass. You have all your challenges unlocked, so you're getting progress for all of them, not locked into specific ones at any one time.

That's a well designed season pass that DbD should take from. Theirs is very fun and player friendly. No one complains about the design on theirs.

  • Mrwood204
    Mrwood204 Member Posts: 226

To be fair, some of them are as simple as we can get. Do gens, save people, heal someone, sacrifice someone, use a med kit. It's just that the ones that are supposed to be done over several games people want to complete in one or two.

A couple of reasons - the first is that people like to complain if they're not 100% satisfied, and if they have a bad game or get frustrated trying to complete one of the challenges, or they're finding it boring grinding out another one, they tend to automatically blame the game design without considering that their attitude might be the main problem.

Secondly, as you said, "if people are freaked out by this stuff, then they have no chance of getting Tome IV done." I think that's what's bothering people. They have problems with some of the grindier challenges, or they have a series of bad games trying to finish master challenges, or maybe they are aware that level 3 of the Tome is being released in a few days and they still haven't finished level 2. And then they freak out because they think, "how am I ever going to finish the whole Tome if I'm struggling even now, and it's only going to get harder from here?"

So it's a combination of genuine struggles or frustrations with level two, and dreading what's to come on that basis.

So we do need to differentiate between the tome and the rift. Like the tome will be there forever. So some joining when we are in the next tome, can still complete this one. So the "grindy" aspect shouldn't really be a factor.

So you can struggle, but keep at it, knowing it isnt going anywhere. So if they are only interested in the tome portion, they can take as long as they like, it's the rift that actually has an end date.

Just team survivors to complete stuff like that it gets much easier

blood debt. I'm trapped at 16 because I keep getting games where I get unhooked RIGHT AFTER getting hooked.

Yes and no. While it's true that the Tome will be around forever, the Rift Fragment rewards will not, so there is still some advantage to completing all the challenges now, and therefore some validity to complaints about challenges being too grindy or difficult for people to achieve all the rewards while they are still available.

The only one I struggled with in Tome II was the Trapper 4x traps one, mainly because I can't Trapper well. And because of DCs. And because everyone is alert to traps due to the challenge. It somewhat set a small meta of people springing traps more often.

I thought I would struggle with 2 blinds in a match, but got it first try.

I'm still worried about the Tome IV challenges though. I don't mind them being hard, but I don't like them shaping the meta so much.

Some of the challenges promote bad play, the biggest culprit was ‘unhook 15 survivors’ as every time someone was hooked there was 2 or 3 players crouched round the hook, fighting for the point towards their challenge.

The specific killer ones could be annoying to play against, I’m sick to death of playing against Trapper every game because everyone is trying to get the challenge done.

Some survivors were bringing in Small Game and sabotage kits to specifically prevent the challenge being completed.

Just a few examples but there are repercussions to these challenges that it doesn’t seem the devs have considered.

It's funny you said that survivors were preventing the challenge from being done because I've never seen so many Plagues as when the challenge to heal teammates came out. Weird.

Harder challenges? There were no hard challenges. At all. People bitched about the grab one but honestly, grabbing people isn't even hard. Not even at Rank 1.

No one freaked out about how DIFFICULT the tome was, well some people thought certain challenges were too difficult, and everyone thought the Dark Sense one needed to be 3 entire generators worth, because the tomes seem to go both ways. For example, one might count generator progression instead of generator completion, while the other counts generator completion instead of progression.

The main problem with these challenges is that the survivor ones don't equate to "play the game normally", but instead require you to play in a toxic manner. Farming people off hooks with BT, self caring yourself while a survivor is sitting there bouncing up and down wanting to heal you, throwing pallets down while in a chase even when you don't need to, etc. I had to swap to Quentin, then swap to my David at the last second for the flashlight one or else the killer would bring an ebony, because that's what killers do when they see a single flashlight. I also brought Object of Obsession and Windows of Opportunity, Lithe, and Spine Chill(for Spirit), so that I could get the challenge done quicker with both pallets and flashlight blinds. This led to me being chased the entire game and depriving myself of objectives and altruism points. Meaning if I died, I depipped despite how well I did. The challenges just kind of encourage you to play in a way that is self defeating for survivors.

As killer though, sure, it equated to pretty much "play normally". I did my Spirit gen grab technique game for the grab one, ended up getting someone at a pallet instead(though I also got gen grabs that game, didn't use prayer beads). As survivor though, it was killing ourselves to get our challenges done. The Plunderer's one was the only one I had legit trouble with. I just ran myself up to killers so many times to kill me after I realized someone got the last chest. I once had 2 chests, then the killer found me near the basement chest(the last one). I ran her around Coal Tower with BL, then as I'm running it I see a Claudette walking out of the basement. ######### snuck in there while I was running the killer around it. Look down, yep, the box is opened. I just ran to the killer and had them put me out of my misery. Next game I just said screw it and messaged the others to let me get the chests, and they obliged thankfully.

So nice I think, if they can give some more BP for the more grindier ones.

Honestly this was my biggest issue. The sheer amount of survivor matches I have to do to full complete tome 2 has me in the red ranks while killer I only have 2 master challenges left and I'm still barely in the purple ranks...And I still need to do: 5 more generators, 15 safe unhooks, 2 botany medkit heals in a match, 2 blinds in one match

Tome II was very survivor sided, who knows, Tome III might be the inverse.

  • DarKStaR350z
    DarKStaR350z Member Posts: 765

Exactly my point, players are trying to prevent the challenges being done. It’s not weird just spiteful.

I was just giving examples and both sides are guilty, no need to try and turn it into an Us vs Them.

I’ve experienced both sides of this as I play both roles like everyone should.

I'm used to play killer more and always ended up with red rank, while standing in lower purples with survivor. Now I'm at higher ranks with survivor than with a killer... I guess last two chapters I'll just farm points for the rift with afk end game wraith and finish the rest of survivor challenges when I feel like it.

Not a real complaint, but my biggest gripe is the 200,000 Bloodpoints, to which I found that post-trial Bloodpoints don't count toward your challenge total.

Its a pity they didnt have challenges that would increase skill or expertise...

"Escape unbroken as (insert name of a popular survivor character here), using only their three unique perks, in a single trial"

"Complete with four iridiscent emblems in a single trial."

"Perform a 4K, using only the three unique perks as a killer."

"Survive a match, using no perks."

These would require some skill I think. And would allow the game to be played normally as well.

It's because the challenges encourage scummy/poor gameplay and the rewards aren't worth the time and frustration it takes to complete them. Just because you got lucky and the stars aligned for your challenges doesn't mean it will for everyone.

  • Revansith
    Revansith Member Posts: 367

You ever think that the challenges were designed that way, and got progressively harder to encourage players to consider buying out tiers?
