They just set it down in front of me. Why? Do they not want it? Is there some greater use I could get from it? Should I swap my current item for it? What’s the overall idea behind this?

    If you were a survivor: It means they want to trade or they found a better item somewhere

    If you were the killer: It usually resembles a peace offering( even if it isn’t great quality) but usually means the survivor wants to trade their item for their life, or for you to turn your eye for 30 seconds etc.

    what advisor said, it may be someone running plunderer's instinct dropping it off to someone else as they don't want to keep it.

    Few possibilities.

    A: It's a peace offering to the killer too either farm or to not hurt them for a little bit.

    B: it's because they have Plunder's and they want a better item, so they gave you one.

    C: They are weird.

    Oh man! These answers are awesome!

    For more info, it happens when I play survivor, it always occurs late in the match, and it’s always a red rainbow map with no add-ons (so not a result of Ace in the Hole.).

    Maps are one of my favourite items together with flashlights. So useful for a blind gollum like me.
